Howdy gang.

Another nice day on the water last Sunday with 22 lucky sailors taking part. The wind was very light but at least the expected rain held off for the whole day, so small blessings eh? Although the breeze was down in strength it stayed in for the entire first race with a steady shift to the right, so if you went left off the line you were a winner. And guess what? No one sailed the wrong course! Another highlight was young Nathan Anderson getting his first hooter for crossing the finish line first in Div 1. It wont be long before he’s nipping on Dad James’ heels and maybe lining up with another junior in a 420 perhaps.

RO Geoff set a nice course with the help of an all junior team in the RHIBs. Nick M and Jess L were in Sutherland looking after the bottom end and Abbey E and Matt W in Woodsy set the top marks. These guys and gals did a great job and their experience sailing at lots of other regattas showed through with a keen understanding of where the marks needed to be without Geoff having to second guess them. Another nice thing the ‘Youngens’ brought to the course was a bit of music rolling across the water. As a Tina Turner fan though, I can say from experience that it can be hazardous attempting the Nutbush in a Sabre. But hey, what are you gunna do when the music takes control!

The other thing that was rolling across the water was Nick’s BOOMING voice letting rip at a large power boat that came roaring through the middle of the course. I reckon he would have given Mono a run for his money! Also good to see Super Deirdre back from her week in Las Vegas none the worst for wear. Although we all know, ‘ What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!’ But if David has to up the price of a bowl of chips, you might guess why.

After a bit of a course change at the top end, we all lined up for a mass start for race two in dying wind, only to have it drop out completely right after the hooter. Super D put up the postponement flag but the writing was on the wall, and two minutes later it was followed by the ‘Bugger off home’ flag. This was disappointing but in the end it was the right call as by the time we hit the beach, the wind had gone completely. All’s well that ends well though as we were packed up early and with daylight savings over, we were all up on the deck enjoying a pre Vegas tax bowl of chips and watching the most magnificent sunset over perfect glassy water, magic!

Only two sails left for the summer season so don’t miss out. Next week we are being joined by the B14’s for the second day of their state titles. They are joining in our race with their own start- very civilised of them to allow us to be part of the fun.

Now if you feel that you haven't had enough sailing this season, and lets face it, we have missed out on a lot of days due to poor conditions, Bill Manning is organising another Winter series like last year. It will be a simplified course held on alternate Sunday mornings to coincide with the keelboat Brass Monkey series. Bill is seeking expressions of interest for sailors and helperouters to make this viable, so find Bill and let him know where you fit on his list. Also something to think about for the end of the season is the Club Person and Junior Club Person of the year, so think back and give a thought to someone you would like to nominate for these prestigious titles. There are a lot of hard working, selfless people in the Club so even to be nominated is gratifying.

Adventures of Tumi, Summer Lovin and LunaSea

After a many months of preparation, and a week of waiting for the weather to blow through, Tumi, Summer Lovin and LunaSea finally left Safety Beach last week to head north searching for warmer weather. They are currently heading up the NSW coast. Tumi and Summer Lovin’s final Australian destination is Coffs, and LunaSea’s destination South Port QLD.

Once at Coffs Harbour, Tumi and Summer Lovin plan to head over to New Caledonia at the end of April/early May. LunaSea will spend the winter in the warmer waters of Queensland.

The KISS Committee is excited to announce the third running of the Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy (KISS) program for 2024, open to all Victorian women and now open for business! The vision of the program founder, Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club’s Immediate Past Commodore Lee Renfree in partnership with Ocean Racing Club of Victoria has now graduated 52 women over two years, empowering them to transition from “passengers” to active, confident “participants”. Howdy Gang.

What a day we had last Sunday eh? Quite a crowd ventured out for the penultimate Club Championship day, 32 boats in all. That’s about the best fleet we’ve had all year. And with every division represented the slightly soggy conditions early on made for some confusion on the start line with multiple flags up that were hanging in a bit of a wet clump. Rob F and the Sharpie gang (not a seventies glam rock band) both took off on the wrong start and had to double back. Rob still managed to “smoke the Cobras” even after giving them a decent head start (their words not mine). Sally Wemyss in her Sabre and Nathan Anderson joined in for a lap or two to get the feel of racing and I’m sure they’ll be back for more.

Being a Club Championship day meant different courses for the two races and that seemed to confuse some bods a bit. I’ll use Div 2 for an example. Fiona M forgot that course one is ‘2’ triangles and course two is ‘2’ sausages. The easy way to remember that is that ‘one’ is an odd number and triangles have an odd number of sides, whereas ‘two’ is an even number and sausages have an even number of sides. That sausages have 2 sides, the bottom and the top, is often demonstrated at Bunnings where the onion goes on the bottom and the sauce goes on the top. Then in race two ( remember the sausages) she headed back for a third lap, letting some undeserving character past for first place. So to recap; course one, odd, triangles, course two, even, sausages, Div 2, two laps. Simples! Other Divisions can work out their own system, it shouldn’t be too hard. As for me going through the start line instead of the finish line? Well, no excuse, that was just plain stoopid!

Apart from those and a few other ‘incidents’, it was a very pleasant day on the water. The rain held off and the wind, although light, stayed in and had just enough shifts to make it interesting. With Deirdre away, on a girls gambling trip apparently, Drew M filled in as assistant RO with Geoff back in the RO chair. Simon H crewed in Woodsy with the honorable John Wemyss (like dreams) and Katrina M roped in son Charlie to help her on Sutherland. Thanks all and Alister M, who did the launch and retrieve of the boats despite having a bung foot.

From all reports, the SBSC contingent at Lake Boga made up nearly a quarter of the fleet and had great success all round, even on the water! Listening in to the conversations in the yard made me regret not going again. Ah well, next year for sure.

One snippet, from a completely unreliable source, led me to put two and two together and come up with a perfectly believable conspiracy theory in regards to Gingerbread Bill M’s mast coming down in Sunday’s first race. Apparently the stays on a Tasar are exactly the same as the stays on an Impulse and it seems Bill left his laying on the ground near the lake only to have them disappear. It then turns out that a certain Tasar sailing person with a fierce rivalry with another Tasar sailor (maybe related, maybe not) had scooped them up and given them to a third party to return to the supposed ‘owner’. This third party (maybe a mafia hitman, maybe not) then returned them to the aforementioned Tasar sailor at a secret drop site without either vehicle coming to a complete stop. Not suspicious at all so far. Eventually the well travelled stays found their way back to the rightful owner via a circuitous route , whereupon they failed in spectacular fashion as Bill was leading the pack for certain victory. Was this an unfortunate accident? Or was Bill the victim of mistaken identity in a much more sinister plot? We may never know!
