March Happenings new

Off The Beach News

Howdy OTB Gang.
Well not a lot to report this week I’m afraid. After missing the last few weeks due to bad weather and the long weekend, we were all looking forward to a good days sailing on Sunday. The day was beautiful and with a small zephyr of breeze near the beach things looked just a tiny bit promising. But B`gosh!and Begorrah!, old St Pat had other ideas. Out on the course there was bugger all wind and owing to an on water start for the keelboats, the course was a looong way out. Geoff had no choice other than delaying the 1.00 KB start by nearly an hour just to get them away, which made our start similarly late. Some of the fleet took to the water early to at least get some sail time as it wasn’t looking good for an afternoon race.

So after a long, slow sail out to where the patrol boats were, it actually seemed pretty good. About 18 boats lined up for a single start and everyone got away okay. But sure enough, not ten minutes into the race , St Pat said “You lot would be much better off back at the Club enjoying a nice pint of Guinness”, and he promptly turned off the wind! Race abandoned, head for shore. And then we saw that he really is a benevolent Saint, as he sent forth a lovely breeze to hasten us back to the Guinness. Job done, that was all she wrote, and not a snake to be seen!

Thanks to the race team for trying their best to give us a race, especially as they had to be on the water an hour early for the KB start. We had Geoff and Super D, t`be sure, t`be sure, in the start boat, Greg W and Finn M in Woodsy and Zack L and Drew M ( filling in for Fiona M, who was filling in for Duncan Mc ). Thanks also to James A ( that man is everywhere! ) for heading out the back and launching all three boats.

One more sail next week prior to Easter and the mass exodus to Lake Boga, so lets try to get a heap of sailors on the water. That just about sums it up for this week, I’ll try and get some reports re: the various titles that many of our sailors went to over the long weekend, it has to be better than my rubbish.

See you next Sunday, and if you get a chance, how about a quick prayer to AEOLUS, the Greek God of Wind, for something nice for a change. I’m sure he has stopped listening to me.

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Green Fleet Sail Training

Junior sail training has been blessed with some really wonderful weather, and this Sunday's forecast is looking like a great day for our last training session. If you haven't come down to witness all the smiles and fun times, I recommend you get down to the club, grab a Snooks coffee and witness our last official session for the season.

Nick and his team will have many other activities planned for the morning, including a sausage sizzle and Easter Egg Hunt. It's never too late to bring a friend along, so remember to spread the word about junior sailing. The training time is 9.30am – 11.30am. See you there.

Junior Keelboat Evening - Friday 22nd March

Each year our Keelboat division invite all junior members to experience sailing on a big boat. This night is always a special treat and guarantees much rivalry between boats, as all skippers and their junior crew will be sailing for sheep stations, bragging rights, and all other expressive terms you can think of !!! In conjunction with this week’s Twilight Race, the club will be running our inaugural “Ciaran’s Cup” Annual Race. This race is new to the program and has been introduced to the club as a special Junior Keelboat Award.

All boats participating in the twilight race must have junior crew onboard to be in contention for this award, which has been named in honour of the event creator Ciaran Snooks. Ciaran’s Cup is a perpetual award and will be presented to the winning skippers and their junior crew by Ciaran on Friday night. Fiona Lowe has been organising junior crew for the night and has gathered up 13 juniors, who have now been placed on 6 different boats for the race. Make sure you welcome our juniors and if you have any photos that you’d like to share from the night, please email them to Fiona for e-news and socials fThis email address is being protected from spambots. Off The Beach News

Howdy OTB Gang.
Sorry about the weather last Sunday, that was my fault. I ordered up some strong wind to mess with the Mt Martha sailors and accidentally went a bit overboard- literally ! So as it stands, for the second year running we have missed out on our chance at redemption. And with their and our calendars full for the rest of the season, we will have to wait until next year. Bummer! Thanks anyway to all the people that volunteered to help on the day and earlier to set things up, Yer blood`s worth bottling.

On to other things now. As this weekend is the Labour Day long weekend where we were going to be hosting the I14 state titles but aren`t, and a lot of the sailors , eg: the A class cats and Tasars, being away for their state titles and generally not a lot of bods around, it was decided to leave this Sunday as no official OTB sailing. That being said, if you want to go for a sail there is nothing stopping you using the yard. Just be careful, and make sure the gates are locked when you leave please.

While on the subject of State titles, Gingerbread Bill M and myself ventured up to Black Rock the weekend before last for the Sabre states and what a cracking weekend it was! 65 entries and only 2 from SBSC :-( , we`ll have to do better next year guys and gals. 65 boats made for a very long start line and with every race starting under a `U` flag they were taking no prisoners. Saturday started with strong wind that built as the day wore on. As Sunday was predicted to be very light, Race Management opted to run 3 races on Saturday to ensure they completed a series just in case Sunday was a bust.

Let me tell you, those three races were all over an hour long and with travel time and the obligatory shifting of marks, we were on the water for over 6 hours ! And the waves up there are completely different to our nice gentle Safety Beach swell. They would rise up vertically in front of you, smack you in the face and say `Stop Right There Sucker!`so I did, many times. Bill on the other hand fared much better, he must have been on the favoured side of the course. Day two, as predicted, was very light but good enough to sail so we set out again for 2 more races, again over an hour long, another 5 hours on the water- sheesh, give a guy a break! The wind in the last race dropped out to zero in places and you could see groups of boats parked up together as you snuck up on them ( or visa versa ) only to take off again with much yelling and bumping - loads of fun !

Eventually the race was shortened, but with the fast sailors being fast and only a 15 minute window to finish after the first boat, just 20 of the 63 starters made it in time. Of those 20, our boy Bill was number 2! Giving him 18th place overall and 3rd in Grand Masters for the weekend. Great job Bill. Good to see a great representation by the female sailors too, with 7th,8th and 15th being ladies and 15 female sailors in total, nearly a quarter of the fleet! `How did You go Chipper?`I hear you ask. Don’t ask. But we all had fun, it was a well run regatta and the Sabre group are all friendly and eager to help each other out, from the top sailors to the cellar dwellers like me. I had no trouble sleeping that night and was very glad to have Monday off.

That’s about it for this week, good luck to everyone away for titles and we`re looking forward to hearing all about it.

Cheers, Pete Chippy

  • OCEAN RACERS SET COURSE FOR DESTINATION KING ISLAND
On the 9th March 2024, the 114 nautical mile race across Bass Strait, organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria and supported by the King Island Boat Club, starts. The fleet will set off from Queenscliff bound for Grassy Harbour, and this year's 53rd ORCV Melbourne to King Island Race promises thrilling battles throughout the feet. Racing under AMS, ORC, multihull, double-handed, and PHS, boats compete for the King Island Trophy awarded to the overall winner on AMS.
Sailors don’t race in this event just for the sailing. One mention of crayfish, the infamous rib eye fillet steak sandwiches and local cheeses has the fleet of close to 200 sailors onboard salivating, ready to knock down the door to the wonderful hospitality of the King Island Boat Club, which uses the event as its major annual fundraiser.
We would like to wish our local boats, Shimmer, Summer’s Lease, Ginan and JokerX2,  a safe and speedy passage to Grassy Harbour (seen below).

Sail Peninsula 2024

That’s a Wrap!

The Marina Martha Cove/Berwick Land Rover Sail Peninsula 2024 regatta had it all, producing the full gamut of testing winds.
Friday evening’s McLardy McShane Twilight Stern Chaser was, simply put, hard yards with a solid 20-25knts and gusts over 30.  Many of the smaller, lighter boats wisely decided to stay shore-side and avoid becoming aquatic tumbleweed heading to Williamstown. Meanwhile, for those that managed to resurface and blink salt from their eyes after a long beat to 25, there was a furious-fast-is-fun ride back to the beach, especially if you had a sports boat underneath you – here’s looking at Rush and Morning Mist etc, jamming their speedos in the teens.

Due to the weather on Friday night and some quick thinking followed by quick action, our onshore event was pivoted inside upstairs to everyone’s relief.  An Italian style buffet from Snooks Catering was enjoyed by all and Ron & Collin from “The Ron Kingston Duo” kept the night rolling with their classic tunes. What great voices and talented musicians. Night finished up around 9.30-10pm which was much appreciated by the sailors – that meant for some well-earned shut-eye so that those attending could rest up and regain their stamina again for Day 2 of racing.

Saturday dawned better for our marque race. Gentle breezes from that ever-reliable southerly direction for the Berwick Land Rover Passage Race to Blairgowrie and back. Hang on, reliable? – nuh nuh, Arthurs Seat is in the way. Unlike Friday, there was nothing solid about the Saturday’s wind – shifts and holes littered the course and was making the bunkers and roughs/golf option look good.  Long day on the gunwales, but at least it was flat, warm and dryer!

As the song goes “Oh what a night”….. Thankfully the weather put it on for us on Saturday night ….. the buffet was simply delicious – David and his team excelled yet again with the red emperor being a crowd favourite. “Disco Inferno” was absolutely A-mazing, kudos to all who were literally on the dance floor from the moment that the band started playing – certainly not for the faint hearted!! Clearly the song list took many on a trip back down memory lane. A few well known “non-dancers” couldn’t even resist the temptation and were seen strutting their stuff! The comradery and fun was real. Huge thank you to everyone that came along and supported the night and some who also managed to score themselves a bargain with our auction items. Nicely done!

Sunday’s forecast for the Margaret Crittenden Memorial Challenge/Team Race, sponsored by Crittenden Wines was for even quieter winds.  But an enticing carrot was dangled early with perfect sailing conditions to the top mark, then a nice run to 25 with the bigger boats getting through the gate and on to R1 before it slowed to NOTHING. Everybody seemed stuck wherever they were, except if lucky enough to be under Martha’s Point. Unsolicited 360 turns on the spot were popping up. But, like a lunch break, after an hour we all got going again and were back at  it – desperately trying to beat the time limits. Very tough for Tiger who missed it – only 50m short of the line. Thanks to all competitors for making the effort and coming along to our Event. Congratulations to all the divisional winners and podium placers – it was great to see so many back at the club for Sunday’s presentation, especially those who still had to sail home to Mornington.  Here’s the list (with full results available here):

Mount Martha Challenge

This Sunday 3rd of March is our turn to host Mt Martha in our annual Round the Hill Challenge. We used to win this unopposed but the last few years they have cleaned us up big time! This is mainly due to them having more boats on the water. We out sail them in most divisions but come up short on numbers. So this year I’d like every able bodied sailor to not only sail themselves but also bring your friends, bring your enemies, I don't care as long as they sail for us and not MMSC! Remember that racing starts at 1.00 not 2.00 and ramming is allowed ( as long as nobody sees you ).
Jokes aside, this is a really fun event and the Mt Marthans are a great crowd who enjoy coming around to SBSC as much as we enjoy going to them. It would just be nice to grab that trophy back again !

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang,
Wasn’t Sunday a great day to be alive, on or off the water? Of course on the water was definitely better, as the 26 starters will attest! For once the wind did exactly as predicted by starting off light (great for the new bunch of Juniors in the morning) then steadily building to the 10-15 knots we were promised. It might have gotten a little higher but not much, Geoff said they had readings down to 13 and up to 19 knots as a peak. I’m sure there were a few gusts of 40-50 knots at times, at least that’s what the Laser group told me!
Good old course 5 gave us some really fun reaches, and being a Northerly, there was some pretty good surf to catch as well.

As the wind built for race two, a few bods headed home, but on the whole most of the fleet handled the conditions fairly well (with the exception of the afore mentioned Lasers). Speaking of Lasers, we had six on the water this week and  a couple still on the beach. That`s getting to be a sizable fleet, and with the growing number of Impulses, division three is no longer the sole domain of the 420s. Leaving the beach, I was treated to the humorous sight of Doc Taylor with one foot in his Impulse, chasing it around like a wayward horse in the mounting yard until it finally tipped over. I shouldn’t have laughed as 30 seconds later I was doing the exact same thing, with the exact same result! Just goes to show, you’re never too old to learn. Thanks for the lesson Doc. Also thanks to the Race team of Geoff/ Deirdre on Start, Greg/Fiona Lowe on Woodsy and Abbey E with Matt W in Sutherland. Great job everyone, lots of mark shifting and powerboat chasing.

Next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday is SBSC`s premier event, Sail Peninsula, so there is no OTB sailing. But, BUT, the following Sunday 3rd of March is our turn to host Mt Martha in our annual Round the Hill Challenge. Remember that racing starts at 1.00pm not 2.00pm and ramming is allowed (as long as nobody sees you). Jokes aside, this is a really fun event and the Mt Marthans are a great crowd who enjoy coming around to SBSC as much as we enjoy going to them. It would just be nice to grab that trophy back again !

That’s all for now. Good luck to those going to the Sabre States at Black Rock and for everyone involved in Sail Peninsula.

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Keelboat News

Wishing all the SBSC boats good luck and great racing for Sail Peninsula this weekend. It's going to be a fantastic weekend on and off the water.  It takes a lot of work in many different areas to put on this event which showcases our great club, so please also show your support by participating in the onshore events. Book your tickets @  https://trybooking.com/COZBN. It's a great opportunity to catch up with other sailors, great food, drinks, and support our sponsors and the efforts of our volunteers.

The club is also open Thursday night so head on down to be part of the build up to the main event. The bar opens at 4pm, live music, dinner from 5.30pm, and watch some race action as we warmly welcome the Mornington pursuit race finishers. Great to hear a few SBSC yachts are also heading up to MYC to compete.

Sunday’s Club Championship Report (Race 8)
By Andrew Arblaster (RO)

On a perfect day for sailing 7 boats started the long race 8 for the club championship with 35 crew. An 8kt southerly filled in just prior to the stat at 10.00. Mr Bojangles made the start of the day at the tower end at full pace. Vamonos started close to the green pole and used her superior pointing ability to sail straight to the yellow pile and round first. Vincitore was second followed by Mr Bojangles.

The next leg of the course was a beat to 19. The boats that stayed in the centre of the course achieved better speed and direction. Vincitore overtook Vamonos. 2Xtreme sailed an excellent leg to be close to the leaders. A spinnaker run to 25 followed with few passing lanes. From 25 to the yellow pile started as a tight reach with Vincitore using their large jib Topper. The reach became more of a beam reach as the wind backed to the SSW. Vincitore found the dreaded yellow pile hole in the wind was becalmed as the other boats came down under spinnaker with a fresh breeze.

The two Adams 10’s avoided the hole by shying up and going closer to Dromana before gybing back to the yellow pile. Mr Bojangles used her ability sail deep under spinnaker to take a direct route. Lumiere and Marrakesh were in a close fought duel down this leg, within a boat length of each other and the lead changing many times. Marrakesh had buoy room at the yellow pile and was able to open a lead of 30 seconds by the green pile.

On the reach to R1 the wind continued to increase and moved further to the SW. Empara was able to overtake Lumiere. There was a long beat out to 19.  2Xtreme made up some ground and Mr Bojangles sailed a good leg as a consequence of the increased breeze strength. All boats enjoyed a long easy spinnaker run to the yellow pile, shying up the spinnaker for the final leg to the finish.

Thanks to Di for helping with the set up and tutorial on the new system and Dawn Clark for making sure all systems were followed.
