Junior Training Program at Safety Beach Sailing Club

Proudly supported by Community Bank Southern Peninsula. |
Our Junior Training Program is open to all children and teens aged 5 to 17 years, offering a fun and supportive environment to learn and grow in the sport of sailing. Whether your child is completely new to sailing or already an experienced sailor, we have a program tailored to their level and goals.
The program is passionately run and organized by our older, experienced youth members, who foster an atmosphere of encouragement, support, and fun — creating a space where new friendships can grow and participants feel a true sense of belonging within the club community.
Our junior program runs every Sunday morning during the sailing season, (October to April). A typical morning is as follows:
- 0900 – Welcome, briefing, rig boats
- 1000 – On the water activities
- 1200 – Finish sailing and pack up
While we encourage families to become members to enjoy the full benefits of the club, we also understand that kids can be fickle, and a long-term commitment isn’t always the right fit straight away. That’s why we promote a ‘try before you buy’ approach. New families are warmly invited to drop in any Sunday morning during the season—just speak to anyone in the yard and you’ll be connected with a member who can show you and your junior around. You might even find yourself on a boat that very morning, so don’t forget to pack a change of clothes!
Junior Boats
We invite all juniors to participate in our Sunday morning sailing sessions, regardless of the type of boat they sail. Juniors DO NOT need to own their own boats to join the program, as we offer a range of club boats for use. This ensures a wide variety of sailing experiences and opportunities for single handed or multi handed sailing for all our participants. Club boats are available for use on club days only but may also be loaned for regattas or events outside the club with written consent and approval from the Rear Commodore.

Racing
Junior sailors are encouraged to participate in the Sunday afternoon racing series, alongside the racing fleets. With access to support from the RHIBS and Start Boat the juniors can have instant support at any time, if they begin to feel overwhelmed. This approach ensures every junior has the chance to experience racing in a supportive environment, focusing on learning and enjoyment rather than results. Parent Involvement As with all volunteer clubs, we welcome as much parent/guardian participation as possible. Parents are encouraged to bring a change of clothing in case they get wet helping out. Parents are also welcome to jump in a boat and find out what all the fuss is about.
Why Choose Safety Beach Sailing Club?
While there are many clubs along the Peninsula that offer sailing experiences, SBSC stands out for its affordable rates, safe and protected waters, relaxed learning environment, and strong culture of mentoring. Juniors also have the opportunity to learn powerboat handling, race management, keelboat sailing, and more. By becoming a junior sailor at SBSC, your child will gain confidence, develop lifelong skills, and most importantly, have fun with their friends.
