Calling All Members
Want to Be Part of the Action on Race Day? The club are looking for enthusiastic members to join our Race Day Volunteer Team! Racing in a community club cannot happen without a wonderful team of volunteers. As we approach the start of another season, the club need to gather a list of members who are willing to help out. As a lot of our sailing members prefer to be on the water on race day, we would like to encourage our social members to join in the fun. No experience? No problem! This is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow members, learn new skills, and contribute to the thrill of race day.
Volunteer Roles Include:
- Start Boat / Race Management
- Patrol Boat Duty with Course Laying & Patrolling
- Control Tower Assistant
If you're interested in joining our team of volunteers, please drop an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and indicate your preference of help (tower or on water). Off the beach fleet race on Sundays and Keelboat fleet race on Friday twilight and Sundays. Club Judge Training Session @ BYS
The Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron are inviting other club members to join them for a Club Judge training session on Saturday, 14 September, from 9 am to 3 pm, including lunch. The session will be led by Tim Dorning, a National Judge and National Umpire, and the cost is $30 per participant.
At times, BYS have trouble finding qualified volunteers for protest chairs and protest committees, and know this can be challenging for other clubs as well, so they are keen to expand their pool of skilled Club Judges, and want to share this training opportunity with neighbouring clubs.
While the Club Judge – Protest Committee training is already available online to all Australian Sailing (AS) members, BYS believe there is significant value in working through the training in a group setting, combined with a mix of theory, discussion, mock hearings and written Q&A. They also see great value in fostering a local "rules group community" allowing more participation in protest hearings and support across clubs.
If you are interested in upskilling, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. asap (and no later than Wednesday 11 September) so we can put you forward.

Keelboat News
Vale - Andrew Arblaster
Andrew Arblaster passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday night, 22nd August 2024. Andy was a keen sailor having been a member of SYC since 1979 and more recently SBSC. Andy sailed on Bacardi, TP52’s, catamarans and on Renaissance at SBSC. He competed in many races including Sydney-Hobart's and Hamilton Island Race Weeks. Andy loved sailing and anything to do with yachts. One didn't need to ask twice if there was an opportunity for a sail or work to be done, Andy would be there. His knowledge and experience was second to none and he was well liked and regarded by his fellow crew members and all who knew him. He will be sadly missed. Vale Andrew
Volunteers like Andrew in a club are 'like gold' and the Keelboat sub-committee will dearly miss him. Since the pilot season of our Fun Friday Series last year, Andrew took on the role of Race Officer every fortnight during Winter. He diligently manned the tower, learnt Sailsys, and made notes of all the on-water action to prepare his thorough race reports. Like me, I am sure many members enjoyed reading Andrew's Fun Friday Race Reports, and below is his last report from Race 7, 16 August...
After a beautiful week of spring weather, winter returned for the Fun Friday Race, including a strong wind warning, showers, and a top temperature of 14 degrees. By race time the wind had moderated to 10 Knots and the clouds had lifted. Six boats and 19 crew braved the cold and a fading breeze. Marrakesh made the start of the day releasing their Genoa just before the start line and crossing at full speed 10 seconds after their nominated start time. Three boats were due to start on 34 minutes, Lumiere won the start at the green pile at 20 seconds. Happy Days covered 2Xtreme in the middle of the line starting 20 seconds late, with 2Xtreme 2 seconds after. On the reach to the yellow pile, 2Xtreme worked into the windward position and was able to call buoy room on the two larger, less manoeuvrable, boats gaining considerable ground. Organised Chaos reached the line early, undertaking a 360 degree turn near the line to cross 35 seconds late. Shimmer was 26 seconds late but crossed at full speed. Organised Chaos and 2Xtreme used their lightweight and large sail area to their advantage on the beat to R1 rounding the mark in first and second place respectively. Shimmer was the standout on this leg, making up their 8-minute handicap disadvantage and passing the other three boats. The wind continued to lighten and Marrakesh, Happy Days and Lumiere were parked in the vicinity of R1. On the reach, the positions did not change however Happy Days made big gains on Lumiere. Congratulations to Organised Chaos, 2Xtreme and Shimmer on managing the testing conditions. Thanks to Dawn Clark and David Donaldson for their assistance in the tower.

ORCV Winter Series Race 4 Brighton to Geelong (Till Brauckmann's Report)
Brett Millar (owner of Summer Breeze), my son Josh and I took part on ‘11:11’ in the ORCV Winter Series Race 4 Brighton to Geelong on Saturday, 17th August. We had a line up of 63 boats at the start. Given the light winds, the race committee opted for a downwind start which had everyone having their spinnakers up. Quite a spectacular sight. Unfortunately, two hours into the race, the wind died off completely, and the course was significantly shortened to the first rounding mark (Point Richards Channel No 1). Josh sailed 11:11 across the finish line and finished 47th out of 63 (on handicap). The lack of wind aside, it was a beautiful day on the water. The organisation of the event by ORCV was seamless and the hospitality at RGYC great. We also saw Javelin and Joker x2 from our end of the Bay on the start line.
Best regards,
Till
