Calling All Members
Want to Be Part of the Action on Race Day? The club are looking for enthusiastic members to join our Race Day Volunteer Team! Racing in a community club cannot happen without a wonderful team of volunteers. As we approach the start of another season, the club need to gather a list of members who are willing to help out. As a lot of our sailing members prefer to be on the water on race day, we would like to encourage our social members to join in the fun. No experience? No problem! This is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow members, learn new skills, and contribute to the thrill of race day.
Volunteer Roles Include:
- Start Boat / Race Management
- Patrol Boat Duty with Course Laying & Patrolling
- Control Tower Assistant
If you're interested in joining our team of volunteers, please drop an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and indicate your preference of help (tower or on water). Off the beach fleet race on Sundays and Keelboat fleet race on Friday twilight and Sundays. If you hold a current boat license and working with children card, please let us know and if you have an special talents or skills relating to sailing, please mention that too! Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to be part of the action!
Club Judge Training Session @ BYS
The Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron are inviting other club members to join them for a Club Judge training session on Saturday, 14 September, from 9 am to 3 pm, including lunch. The session will be led by Tim Dorning, a National Judge and National Umpire, and the cost is $30 per participant.
At times, BYS have trouble finding qualified volunteers for protest chairs and protest committees, and know this can be challenging for other clubs as well, so they are keen to expand their pool of skilled Club Judges, and want to share this training opportunity with neighbouring clubs.
While the Club Judge – Protest Committee training is already available online to all Australian Sailing (AS) members, BYS believe there is significant value in working through the training in a group setting, combined with a mix of theory, discussion, mock hearings and written Q&A. They also see great value in fostering a local "rules group community" allowing more participation in protest hearings and support across clubs.
If you are interested in upskilling, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. asap (and no later than Wednesday 11 September) so we can put you forward.

New Keelboat Captain
I am very pleased to be able to announce that our new Keelboat Captain is Nick Jones.
As you know, John Wemyss has moved over to tackle the task of Vice Commodore. Our thanks go to John for the great work he has done with the Keelboat Committee over the past two years.
Nick is well known to many of you. Along with Fiona and the kids on 'Vamonos', he is very active in the sailing and racing scene at SBSC. He will be a great asset to the Keelboat Committee. Please make him welcome into the role.

Melbourne to Devonport ‘Rudder Cup’ (Friday 1 November)
What better way to spend your Melbourne Cup long weekend than competing in one of the most iconic events on the Australian sailing calendar! The Melbourne to Devonport ‘Rudder Cup’ is the oldest ocean race in Australia but features a youthful spirit and energy amongst competing crew, on full display during a warm reception hosted by Mersey Yacht Club. This race is also a qualifying event for the upcoming Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’. Entries are now open! www.orcv.org.au/devonport
Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’ (Friday 27 December)
The ORCV ‘Westcoaster’ is a legendary yacht race where tactics and sailing well can crown you as the race champion, regardless of boat size. Across the 435nm passage, yachts contend first with Bass Strait before taking on the wilderness and ruggedness of the West Coast of Tasmania and the long ocean swell of the Southern Ocean before turning towards the finish line and the shifting winds of the Derwent. For more than 50 years, the Westcoaster has provided sailors with a unique race full of tactical challenges. Entries are now open!
