Sunday Sounds Andrew Farrell 17 Nov 24

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang,
Nice day to be on the water last Sunday wasn’t it? Shame about the wind dropping out, but hey, that’s sailing for ya. Wayne J and Russell T in Sutherland said that when they first went out the wind was up around 15 knots way out past the mussel farm, hence the long course. Alas it wasn’t to last and after a bunch of boats ended up camped between the wing and bottom marks (and some of us didn’t even get that far) it was decided to pull the pin on that race and wait a bit for some breeze.

Earlier, up near the Dromana pier, one of the Keelboats, ‘Vamonos’ had come in a wee bit close to shore, well a lot too close to the shore really, and ended up fairly stuck on the sand. Da da dat daah- key the Indiana Jones music, and off went the Flying Red RHIBs to the rescue! They pulled this way and they pulled that way, they even tried pulling the other way but all to no avail as ten tonne of keelboat firmly stuck was more than a match for our dynamic duo and they prudently decided to call it quits before tearing the bum out of the RHIBs. I wonder if they tried both pulling from the same side, hmm.
Poor old Vamonos had to wait for high tide, I’ll bet they wished they could have just pulled up the centreboard !

Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, RO Geoff, ably assisted by Judy the Champion, were trying their best to give us a race in a frustrating situation where the wind would pick up then drop to nothing as the sea breeze fought the offshore breeze, and just like Vamonos, we ended up going nowhere.

Closer in to the beach, much of the fleet were having a bit of fun in the shallows taking every advantage of whatever wind they could get while waiting to see what would happen on the course proper. Well, the answer was- nuthin’, not a soss, nada, and up went the dreaded AP over A, and that was all she wrote. Of course as we were sailing back, the wind picked up and a few of us tried a mini race around the yellow piles but it was not to last, and when that fizzed out it was back to the beach for all of us.

So to recap, 22 boats headed out on a beautiful sunny day, sailed around for a bit, sailed back to the beach, talked some bull dust and had a laugh in the yard then headed upstairs for a cleansing ale and more bull dust. Still sounds like a pretty good day to me. And we managed to reach week 5 before we lost a day, a bit better than last season.

Talking about SBSC members who can really sail, some of our guys were up at The Woollahra Sailing Club the other week for the NSW B14 state titles and gave them all a lesson in how it’s done. Paul F and Craig G winners with three 1sts, a 2nd a 3rd and a 4th for 8 points after six races. Leigh D and Brent F in second place with two firsts and four 2nds also with 8 points. It doesn’t get much closer than that. Fancy having a 2nd place as your drop and still being the bridesmaid !

That’s about all for this week folks. Thanks to Geoff and The Champion Judy on Start, Muzza McN and Rob W in Woodsy and Wayne J and Russell T in Sutherland. You did your best guys.

Cheers, Pete Chippy
Ps: I wonder if Vamonos is still there ???

Keelboat News

Message from the Captain

Friday's twilight saw breezy and cold conditions and those brave enough (not our little boat!) managed to have a great race down to SB2.  The feedback was it was great to expand our sailing ground and sail a longer course.  It was such an exhilarating sail some of the fleet forgot which way to round the mark, which caused a bit of mayhem at the mark rounding.  Please make sure you always have a printed copy of the latest courses onboard as a quick reference guide.
While we’re on the topic of courses, Sunday’s race (in fact also on Friday night) some of the fleet entered the shipping channel, and when on the tack back past with Channel Mark 25 to port and 23 to starboard leaving little doubt.  We must remember not to enter the shipping channel at all.  This instruction is from Ports Victoria and is why we have had to remove all channel marks as rounding marks. It’s easiest to imagine a straight line between the Green markers and not pass through this.
Now I’ve had my say on 'who' did 'what' wrong in both Friday and Sunday races from my high horse and keyboard(!), I can confidently inform the keelboat fleet that there is not enough water SE of the pier mark off Dromana.  I won’t charge the club for my survey findings as I believe my research benefits us all!!  Jokes aside, the weekend’s grounding incident will be reviewed by the club with findings published in a separate communication - to help minimise these events occurring and streamline the rescue processes in place.
Cheers
Nick Jones

Cup Weekend 2024 - Cruise Notes

Four boats - Whiskers, Joint Venture, Summer Breeze and Seaclusion sailed up to Docklands for a fun weekend in Melbourne. It was great to see Mark & Gwen McAuliffe getting back into cruising on their new purchase, ‘Seaclusion' a 42ft Jeanneau. We docked at Yarra’s Edge Marina which is right next door to DFO South Wharf and has easy access to just about everything via the wonderful free trams in the city.  We enjoyed a restaurant dinner on Saturday night then a ‘cook up’ on Whiskers for a Sunday night BBQ with lots of goodies from the Queen Vic Market.  It was a great way to spend the weekend.  If you missed out this year, put it in your calendar for next year as we plan to make it an annual event.

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.
What an absolute cracker of a sailing day we had on Sunday. What started as a potential blowout due to the morning gale warning from the BOM, morphed into perfect sailing conditions for the afternoon. It was a pity we only had about 12 boats on the water for such a great day. I suppose it was partly due to the looong weekend, and partly my text about the gale warning. Sorry, but what are ya gunna do? Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

All in all though, those that did sail had a ball. Race one was fairly light, go figure, and shifty as well so if you picked the wrong side, or tacked on a knock you were toast. I did and I was, as opposed to yard master extraordinarie, Muzza McNeil. In a flash of Devine inspiration, Muz decided to ditch that tippy old Laser and jumped in a real speed machine for a change. Yep, another happy Sabre convert. Makes a change from the losses to the Impulse gang! Muz took to the Sabre like he was born to it ( too syrupy ?) and gave me a right flogging for the whole race.

In a good lesson for all sailors, Matt W and Jess L in Dad Neil’s Tasar had a mishap before the start of race 1 when one of the pins holding the port shroud popped out and de-masted them. Not being familiar with the boat, they had problems getting the sails down and were stuck, outta luck, and had to get a tow home. Check those pins and shackles before hitting the water. In a twist of fate, Matt and Jess were rostered on for rhib duty but due to our non sailing helpers putting their hands up, they were given the chance to sail. They could have been the tow-ers instead of the tow-ees.

By race two, the wind had picked up nicely to around 12 to 15 knots and with a good clean start, every one was away. Perfect breeze for A Class Anthony who took the opportunity to finish two, yes two, races for the day. Div 4 had just the two Tasars, but they fought it out to the end and the biggest group, Div 3 managed to stick pretty close together as well. Back in Div 2, with only three Sabres, we were fairly well spread out ( not so good this time eh Muz? ).
All was good for Fi M, who looked like backing her convincing race one win with another trouncing of the boys, when all of a sudden, that shroud pin evil spirit struck again. Same side, same result. As with Matt and Jess, a tow home was needed- oh the shame!

With the stronger breeze blowing, race two was fairly short so I was looking forward to a third race, but alas, as they were still involved in getting the rowboats ( can’t call them a Yacht without a mast can you?) back to shore, we were all out of rescue boats. With safety always coming first and the estimated time for the rhibs getting back on the course putting it a bit late for starting a third race, RO Ewan C reluctantly ran up the AP over A and that was all she wrote, bummer.

Back to the beach ( why is that sail back always so good?) and the onshore chop made for some interesting landings, but no casualties so all good. End of the day and every one was happy, none more so than Muzza, who is now in the market for a new boat. His final remark on Sunday was “ If you weren’t on the water today, sucks to be you!” Harsh Muz, harsh but true. So everyone, get ya bum in a boat and get it wet. The boat, not ya bum!

Thanks this week to Ewan C for ROing and Judy ‘The Champion’ Champion for filling in for Super D as Asst RO, Happy Birthday D !  Hamish McC and Simon H in Sutherland and the two Rockin’ Robs ‘ C and W in Woodsy, what a team!

Last item on the agenda this week, it was mentioned by the fabulous catering staff that the last members out left the gate and the change room door wide open, and while probably not OTB, the tower door was wide open as well. It is not their job too check or close these and it would be sad to see damage to the club rooms or loss of hard earned gear due to this oversight. If you are last out or the last boat heading out of the yard, just take a moment to check and close up properly ( and make sure the flags are down- they just go in the sign in cupboard ).

That’s all for now folks, see you next Sunday, Club Championship.

Cheers, Pete Chippy

PS; check out the great shots of A Class Anthony flying along and the tight start of the Div 3 boats. Compliments of Ewan C multi tasking on Start.
Tony
420 Cup Weekend

When two boats meet…….

It doesn’t happen too often, but occasionally the OTB dinghies and the keelboats end up in the same part of the bay. Usually when the keelboats are approaching for their finish. This occurred a couple of weeks ago and it has raised some valid discussion points.
Due to timing, any conflict is only likely when the keelboats are doing a club championship with an on-water start. The OTB RO’s are aware of the keelboat course and when possible, will try to position the OTB course to avoid any possible conflict. The point has been made that some of the dinghies were not aware that a keelboat was approaching. The message has gone out to the OTB sailors to keep an eye out for bigger boats and that they need more room to manoeuvre than you might think.
On the other hand, a keelboat sailed through the OTB start area just before a race start where lots of dinghies were gathered, equally this shows a lack of awareness as to the situation on the water.
Simply the message is. Keep an eye out for each other, keep clear in plenty of time and as always in the case of who has right of way the standard collision avoidance rules apply.
Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

Female Helm Series

By way of update, we have set up a new 'Individual Series' for the 2024/25 Margaret Hollamby Female Helm Series (4 races) in SailSys. Previously, the series was set up as a sub-series under the 2024/25 Inspire Marine Friday Twilight Pursuit Series. However, this would cause all boats that entered the Friday Twilight series to be automatically registered for the Female Helm (regardless of them having a female helm or not).

Accordingly, if you intend to race in the 2024/25 Margaret Hollamby Female Helm series, please register again using the separate (individual) series in SailSys. CLICK HERE   If you just intend to race the Friday Twilight Pursuit series but not the Margaret Hollamby Female Helm series, you do not have to do anything.  We apologise for the confusion and wish all our female helms a successful series.

As a reminder, the first race of the Margaret Hollamby Female Helm series is on 15th November.

Howdy Gang.
Another cracking day on the water last Sunday, although it didn’t look like it to start with. I was on RHIB duty and thought I was on a winner as we floated around on the Port Phillip Mill Pond waiting for the slightest zephyr to stir some interest. We didn’t even have Rob C with his usual wind breaking antics to get the show on the road ,( he is quite multi talented, I’ve heard him play the National anthem and there wasn’t an instrument in sight! ). The race team were monitoring all the weather apps and things finally things looked a bit promising, so down came the AP and by the time the boats reached the race area there was a sailable breeze blowing, around 5 to 6 knots and building- noice!
It was Club Championship week and we had 22 starters, which is pretty good considering we’re still down a few bods due to unforeseen circumstances, like the slow boat from Italy with Stu S and Dave B’s A Class cats not back yet. Silver lining though, Stu and Dave have been on the RHIBs each week to give the rest of us a chance to sail. Thanks guys.

Race one got away nicely in three groups ( only one individual recall, unlike last week, so no need for the black flag ) and by the time most of the boats were on their second lap, the wind had built substantially - extra noice ! Everyone was zipping along nicely and the cats were purring, sorry Stu and Dave. The only mishap i saw was Luke Marchesani in his Cobra cat cleaning up the wing mark dead centre. I thought he would need untangling as the mark was well and truly wrapped up in his forward shrouds, but with some vigorous yanking he was free, did his penalty and was off again in hot pursuit of the other Luke M in the other Cobra cat ( only their Mothers can tell them apart ). I heard a big shout from Katrina M as she crossed the line first of the Sabres so she was pretty happy with herself, but I’ve just been looking at the scores on the sailor app, and she has a big NCS against her name, maybe did a sausage instead of the second triangle , bummer Kat.

A bit of a delay as we waited for the stragglers and a decent wind shift meant moving the marks and laying the bottom gate, but then off they went again. This race saw stronger, gusty wind and quite a few opted out in favour of an early beer on the deck. Those that stayed enjoyed som close racing, and again the only casualty was poor old Luke again. This time, with no marks in sight he managed to tip in and no amount of effort could right her. There must have been some water in the mast as when he went completely turtle the only way back up was a tow from one of the RHIBs and then a lift of the mast tip to stand her up. Not his day!

Back to the beach for the sailors and back to the dock for the race team to retrieve, wash down, pack up and put away the boats. That meant that by the time we got back to the Club, not too many were left and I missed out on all the Goss. Of course Rob C was there, belting out his rendition of “Oh When The Saints”. Again, not an instrument in sight!

That’s about it for this week, thanks again to Stu and Dave in Sutherland, RO Geoff and Super D in Start with Gregg W behind the wheel and I had the pleasant company of Rob Wells of Coastguard fame in Woodsy.

Last but not least, a request from Rob C to PLEASE send him via text your power boat licence details, date of expiry and emergency contact for the power boat register. His number is 04AGOODTIME- sorry, that’s his business number. Boat details to 0498 208 007, this is very important and makes his job as power boat Captain a lot easier.

Cheers till next Sunday, Pete Chippy

Great job by this week’s tower team from Marrakesh along with Lynlee Coutts - there were plenty of close finishes to keep them on their toes!
We hope to see another big fleet out this Friday.

The  ORCV ‘Westcoaster’ is a legendary yacht race where tactics and sailing well can crown you as the race champion, regardless of boat size. Off The Beach News

G’day Gang.

Another great day on the water with a stack of boats. I didn’t catch the exact number but it looked like well over twenty five, with a mixed bag of Tasars, 420s, Lasers, Impulses, Sabres and the Sharpie (no singing this week Russ?) along with a Cobra, a Windrush, a Taipan and a couple of A Classes in the Cat department. Come to think of it, it must have been closer to thirty boats. Not bad for this early in the season.

I think a lot of the reason for this is the positive vibe around the Club this season. Carrying on from the hugely successful working bee that was the result of a lot of planning and preparation by the movers and shakers, backed up by a great attendance by You, the members. Everyone just seems really keen to be at the Club doing Sailing Club stuff, and then hanging around after sailing to do more Sailing Club stuff, albeit of the elbow bending variety. It bodes well for the Club as there seem to be a few new members showing up and they seem really impressed by the fun and friendly attitude in the yard and up on the deck.

The racing on Sunday, with RO Stu Scott, nearly didn’t happen, as straight after setting the start for the Keelboats and getting them away, the steering packed it in on the start boat. This meant that where she was was where she was going to stay and if the wind shifted at all to the North we would have been right in the mussel farm. Now as we all know, and as Ross M pointed out afterwards, we never EVER sail through the mussel farm, not even a little bit.

Luckily the wind held true and after the most hectic start in quite a while, with Divs 2,3 and Four all heading off together on a very biased line, the pack mentality meant so many were early over the line that Stu called a general recall, then ran up the black flag for good measure. No prisoners here! The next start was a lot more orderly, until five seconds after the hooter when the wind stopped completely for a bit and left quite a log jam. Loads of fun for all concerned!

Finally, finally things settled down and we all got away and the fleet spread out fairly rapidly depending on which way you went. Logic seemed to have nothing to do with it, as lots of swings and holes showed no mercy at all, especially if you were at the back,(that’s my excuse anyway). The breeze eased to the point where the course had to be shortened to get us all finished, but we did.

A fairly big shift (to the South luckily) meant some rapid buoy relocating and shortening then we were off again, in a much more civilized manner this time. A much more consistent breeze made for a tighter fleet in this race, but they still had to shorten as the wind eased towards the end. And that’s where I, and  a few others got totally confused as to which way to finish. Nothing wrong on the part of the race team, just some of us not taking note of what was happening and not really knowing what to do on a shortened course. Some homework is in order for yours truly and others before next time.

Club Championship this week, so all you big game hunters better  bring your A game if you want wrestle that trophy off the Martins this year. Remember, Geoff and Super D will be on start and Deirdre is always open for a cash advance to swing the scoring. Stu S and Dave B in Sutherland are a bit straight down the line, but Paul M and Myself in Woodsy will be eager and willing to help with a well placed “accidental” bow wave, nudge nudge, wink wink (no cheques, just the folding stuff).

Thanks to all the race team last week, Stu and Super D on Start, Norm K and Simon H in Sutherland and Heckle and Jeckle AKA Rob C and Coast Guard helper, Rob Wells in Woodsy-what a pair!

As a follow up re: the start boat, Erik M , ably assisted by Mark the Markman L, have fixed the faulty hydraulic line (I think Geoff sabotaged it, classic English spy thriller move), so we are all set for this week. Thanks guys.

That’s all for this week, cheers, Pete Chippy

After Friday's race was abandoned, there were plenty of sailors keen to hit the water on Sunday.  We had a total of 16 keelboats on the start-line.  The SBSC historian (unnamed) believes this may well be the biggest Sunday race we've had!  A great start to the season, and if everyone keeps it up there will be plenty of Club Championship contenders come May 2025.  A big thank you to Judy Champion (RO) and Dawn Clark in the tower, and all the OTB on-water crews in the start boat and RHIBs.

History In The Making

Fancy yourself as a history lover? The Executive Committee would like to appoint one or more privileged members to handle our history. If you've been at the club for many years, or know someone that has been part of our history, then we need your help! During the last few years the club has accumulated quite a lot of boxes of documents, trophies and general memorabilia, which is far too important to just throw away. Ideally we would love someone to take ownership of sorting it out, with the care and consideration it deserves. Documents and files of significant importance need to be sorted and outsource for digitizing. Trophies and other items need to be cleaned, cataloged and displayed around the club (if appropriate). This type of role is new to the committee and we hope that it will be a continuing role for the future. There is no timeline on getting this done, however finding an immediate home for all of these boxes is of high priority. The current storage solution is not ideal, as it is taking up space in the downstairs training room. If you would like to help with this request, please email our secretary Veronica at This email address is being protected from spambots.
