Season Opening 2024 Flyer v2

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang!

Well here we are again at the start of another season, I can’t believe how quickly it has come around. Someone said it is because I’m getting old but I refuse to believe that, I think it has something to do with global warming. I’m blaming that for losing my hair so I might as well lump time speeding up in there as well.

Enough of that frivolous banter, on to the real stuff; the 24/25 Summer Sailing Season Opener. As you would have all read the season program and opening day run sheet by now, I hardly need to mention that the on water activities kick off with the traditional sail past of the Commodore. 10.30 for the Keelboats and 10.45 for the OTB fleet (no mooning this year Ross!). Immediately followed by the Keelboat first warning at 10.55. Once they have cleared out, the OTB first warning will be at 11.12.

Much thought went into coming up with a slightly different race format this year just to make it interesting. We toyed with a teams race idea with maybe a LeMans style start, a round the mussel farm course with a different number of laps depending on boat class. Geoff even suggested sailing to Sorento and back, ridiculous! In the end, a sensible and successful idea was put forth by Stu Scott that we do a simple windward return course but with a gate at the top so you can choose to go port or starboard depending on how you feel. One lap for Div 1, two laps for Div 2&3, three laps for Div 4 and 4 laps for Div 5&6. Probably a start/finish line below the bottom mark and a leeward finish to keep us heading towards the beach but this will all depend on wind direction and strength. One thing you can be sure of though, it will be close to shore so friends and family that aren’t lucky enough to be on the water will be able to cheer you on.

This year to reward your efforts in The Commodore's Cup, the Club has spared no expense and has sourced two magnificent 18 carat GOLD CUPS, probably from the makers of the AFL premiership or Melbourne Cups. One for the Keelboats and one for OTB. Scoring will be on Fleet handicap, so don’t even think about jumping in an Opti Andrew Taylor, Geoff will be right onto you!

As this is a bit different to other years, there will be a briefing in the yard around 10.00, after the course has been confirmed by the Race Team. In the Start boat we will have Geoff the Magnificent, Super Deirdre and Greg Weston, Woodsy to be crewed ( or is that ‘crude’?) by Rockin’ Rob Campbell assisted by one of our Coast Guard friends, Rob Wells. And fresh from a stellar campaign at the A Class Cat World Championships in Italy, Sutherland will have none other than the rock star duo, Dave Brewer ( 11th place ) and Stu Scott (28th place with a broken arm fresh out of plaster). Pretty good in a fleet of 82 foilers with four Aussies in the top 15, including 2nd place.

Back to our race. Once you have done your laps and howled in frustration at getting pipped at the finish line, (probably by a Martin), get back to the beach as quickly as you can to partake in the festivities and food that is Safety Beach Sailing Club Opening Day.

As always the weather is going to be perfect, so get ya bum in a boat and put it on the water!

Cheers, Pete Chippy OTB Captain

PS: the yard looks a bit like a bomb site at the moment compliments of an amazing working bee last Sunday. At the yard we had people cleaning the spar locker, painting ,gardening, fixing gates, mounting Opti's to the South wall and if you stood still for five minutes, Clarky would have dug a hole with his excavator and put you in it! That man is a machine himself, albeit a soft cuddly one. Some of this work is on going so take care and have patience. At the boat dock another gang were hard at it sorting and cleaning the shed and putting the final-ish touches on the boats in readiness for this week. Great work everyone especially John Wemyss (like dreams), and Muzza McNeil for organising lots of it.

Power Boats and Safety update – what’s new and what do we need to know!

Well who would have thought here we are only 4 more sleeps until the new season, and  let’s hope the weather work for us - Sunday at this stage is looking lovely!

All boats are serviced and ready to go!!

To better manage the rescue / power boat operations and all that comes with that, we’ve put together a few initiatives that we believe will help all volunteers better understand what do when, and how, meaning when on duty your role will be much easier. It also helps with risk management and personal / sailor safety 😉

  1. All rescue boats will feature a laminated checklist ( A5 size reverse), that highlights specifics. ( see attached )  We’ve been asked for this for sometime and here it is. We may add / delete at any time,  but for now we feel this is a good starting point. Check it out and let us know your thoughts.
  2. All power boats now feature an approved AMSA sticker that clearly details what to do in an emergency. More specifically how to make a mayday radio call and what radio channel to use. I certainly hope this is never needed but I trust you would all understand the importance of knowing how to do this in the event of a heightened emergency is knowledge worth having.
  3. All power boats now have an extended lanyard attached to the “kill switch” that needs to be attached to the actual skipper of the boat at all times. It’s super easy to do you’ll see it just needs you to clip to your lifejacket or wrap around your wrist, either way that works for you. It is law in Victoria that all power boat operators “wear” the kill switch when underway ( moving) , but that aside the kill switch is designed to “stop” the vessel in event of the skipper being incapacitated in any way. Makes sense yeah??

Over and out for now, and looking forward to Sunday and please any suggestions / thoughts are welcomed!

Discover Keelboat Racing – Exclusive Offer to SBSC Club Members

Have you ever considered taking part in SBSC’s keelboat races but don’t know where to start and how to find a position as crew? Have you put off the thought as it felt too intimidating, and as you thought you lack the experience?
Discover Keelboat Racing is an exclusive offer to SBSC club members, and designed for novices in keelboat racing who have not raced before and have no prior crewing experience but are keen to learn the ropes in a fun environment.
You will be able to join some of our most experienced skippers and crew and work alongside them on their boats during some of our Friday Twilight Pursuit races in November. You will learn through hands-on experience, supported by some theory of what it takes to win a race.
And who knows, you soon may get addicted to racing and enjoy it so much that one of the boats will sign you up as a regular crew.

What’s required from you?
Curiosity, a willingness to work in a team and to follow the instructions of the skipper. Plus, a commitment to give up some of your Friday evenings. As places are strictly limited, please understand that this offer is exclusive to SBSC club members only.

Working Bee

Hi All
Just a reminder that the Working Bee is on at the club this Sunday morning from 9am.
There are a heap of tasks to be attended to (I have a list so make sure you come and see me). It promises to be a really satisfying day setting the club up as a tidy and pleasant place for everyone to enjoy for the summer season to come.
Please come along, help sort a few things out, and during as well after, catch up with the other members who are doing their bit.
BBQ and beers etc will be provided as well as endless amounts of fun so be there ;-)
There is a bit of the usual stuff like garden trimming and painting to be done as well so bring along any tools (spades rakes trimmers) you think necessary
Importantly, If you or you know of somebody who does have equipment stored at the club including SUPs, kayaks, masts, booms, sails ,centreboards, rudders etc please ensure you and they get down there either before the Working Bee or on the day and identify the items with your name and phone number / sail number. (bring a permanent marker)

Cheers and see you on Sunday morning

Season Opening 2024 Flyer v2

Off The Beach News

Hi OTB Gang.
I emailed you all a copy of this season's duty roster last night. If you didn't receive it, check your junk folder. Failing that it will be in the enews and is already on the Club calendar. Bill Manning and I (well, mainly Bill) spent many hours putting it together and every effort was made to put the right people together. This was made easier by all the people that responded with their preferred dates, so thanks for that. This is a fluid document and as usual things will change as conflicts arise. If you can't do your duty on your rostered day, please try to find a replacement first before calling for help.

You will all notice that Geoff The incredible is not rostered on nearly as much as previous years. This was done to give him a well earned rest as well as giving our other race officer members a chance to use their skills and get up to speed on some of the new procedures, such as BouyZone. Try as I might, I couldn't pry Super Deirdre out of the Start boat even with a pointy stick! I'll keep working on that.

Also this season we have a willing group of non sailing volunteers ready to jump in the rhibs to give us sailors more of a chance to sail. Some of them are members of the Coast Guard who have offered to help and some are eager social members. If we treat them well they may even offer to do more duties than they are rostered on for - winner winner , chicken dinner!

Cheers for now, and see you on Sunday morning for the working bee.
Pete Chippy

Your Bot Mark Needs You!

As you may know the club purchased a bot mark last year. It is no longer required for keelboat racing and is available for us to use in OTB races. This is an exciting opportunity to improve our OTB races with accurate courses and quicker turnaround times between races. Check it out Here

We need to form a group of four volunteers who can help run and manage the Bot. If you can help please contact:

October Happenings 2024

Keelboat News

Message From The Captain

To the Keelboat Skippers and Crew that made it to Sunday’s meeting, thank you for your support and going easy on me!  To recap and for those not there:

Courses

We’re on the verge of getting two new laid marks, SB1 & SB2. They won’t arrive in time for the start of the season so will be virtual marks in the short term but will hopefully be in by Cup weekend or shortly after, making the virtual marks a thing of the past. Be sure to keep a printed copy onboard for quick referencing - nothing worse than leading the race only to find you’re sailing to last year's course!

Sailsys

Race sign on and POB’s is now all done via Sailsys, eliminating the need to radio the tower before each race. Course selections will be communicated via text message and will no longer be displayed on the balcony board. Please ensure that you add crew to your ‘crew registry’ before the start of the season to make it easier to select crew for each race.

We are expecting this change to take a little time to become second nature, but the more we do it the easier it will become.  Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like assistance with this ahead of the season.

Compliance

Please carry out your MOB drill, fill out the declaration form (click here) and submit it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by the 31 October deadline. We will have the use of 'Leo' the water rescue dummy from the coast guard, so please register your interest if you would like to use it. Thoughts are it can be used by some boats pre and post racing, possibly up to 6 boats per race.

As a club we have had several MOB incidents, so I can’t stress the importance of doing the drill properly and, as a crew, work through the ‘what ifs’ and train as if one day it could be you bopping up and down in the water.

Regarding the Cat 5 and insurance details, there is no need to submit them to the club. Please complete the documentation and use the tick boxes in Sailsys. I would suggest uploading the documents into Sailsys in your boat file. This will make them easy to produce should they be required.

Sail Peninsula

Sail Peninsula is in urgent need of volunteers to help run the event. At this point it is a 50/50 chance whether it will go ahead. Without volunteers, it simply won't happen. If you're able to assist, please contact the club. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.

On a related note, the tower is also looking for extra helpers on a regular basis. If you know anyone, friends or family, interested in learning new skills and joining the fantastic tower team, please reach out to the club. It a great way for them to be involved.

Discover KB Racing

The Discover KB Racing initiative was well received, with six boats registering interest on the day. The goal is to engage members who aren’t actively sailing and introduce new crew into our sport with the hopes of them becoming regular crew, new boat owners or volunteers. Bringing in new, active members is essential for the growth of our sailing club. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like more information.

Weighing Day

There is a plan for a weighing day at Martha Cove for AMS and ORCc. This will incorporate boats from Mornington and Blairgowrie, so please register your interest by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  Once we have a better idea on the numbers we can work out a cost per boat.

Survey

Please keep an eye out for a survey that I would like to send out ahead of the season. The main reason for this is to gauge the different interest levels in sailing on Fridays, Sundays, participation back at the club, along with Sail peninsula. Your feedback is important and will help with planning and preparing. We appreciate your input and encourage everyone to take a few moments to complete the survey when it arrives.

Thanks everyone, and I look forward to seeing you all out on the water.

Patrol Boat News

The new season is almost upon us, so I thought it timely to give a quick update re all things Power Boats.
Please remember if you haven’t already done so, to get in touch with Chippa re rostering for crews. Even if you know when you CAN’T do duty helps him find who can!!
Boats are almost ready. Both red RHIB’s are back in shed and will be run Friday after servicing to make sure all is good. Friday, I plan to double check all safety gear and lifejackets are being serviced as we speak.
Start has had some work done to it based on a list form Geoff and Deidre. Mostly aesthetic items but important nonetheless and we can report all has been addressed, sorry for the delay D & G, thanks Pete and Tim for helping with the list.
Blue RHIB should also be serviced and good to go by this weeks end.
NOTE: This year we are putting in place some really important safety measures to ensure we are both compliant with all relevant laws but equally to have a record system in place in the event of an incident.
The first ( and most basic) thing we are doing is setting up a Marine License Register. Essentially what that means is the club will have a central record of Marine License numbers and expiry date or all volunteers driving ANY club vessel. We are working how to best make it available through the club Share Drive, watch this space. For now, dig out your license please so it’s top of mind, or send details to me and I can complete the sheet if you wish.

That’s about it for now.

Well the new season is rolling around faster than I would have believed possible, and your various committees have been hard at work making sure everything is ready to go for your sailing pleasure. So on that note, here is my usual letter to the masses asking you to send me your preferred dates for patrol boat duty. Even better, tell me dates that you are not available, to save any hassles. I’ve included the 24/25 sailing program for you peruse HERE as well as some regatta dates so you can take these into consideration when picking your duty dates. This year we have some non sailing people that have very kindly put up their hand to help out on the RHIBs, but more on that later.

So for now, PLEASE get back to me ASAP with your dates as Bill Manning and I want to get the roster sorted.

Winter Season Wrap Up

What a great Winter Season it has been on the water.  Strong support for the growing Fun Friday Series, and a Brass Monkey Series where all 9 races were run.  Due to this, please note the scheduled BMWS Resail this Sunday is not required.  The club will therefore be closed this Sunday.
Off the water, a BIG thank you to all our ROs and tower assistants for kindly volunteering your time.  We sadly lost our sailing friend, Andrew Arblaster late in the season, who had taken up the role of running the Fun Fridays all season.  We will miss him dearly.  I would also like to name all the other people who were in the tower over the season, some of whom stepped in as an emergency fill-in; Judy Champion, Elaine Nicholas, Amanda Malin, Dawn Clark, Dianne Jackson, Tim Bardon, Lynlee Coutts, Jann Wilson, Andrew Stocks, John Matheson.  Thanks everyone - it can be hard work keeping a roster going, but your willingness to help out makes it so much easier!

It is looking like a great sailing season ahead and we are looking forward to seeing plenty of yachts out for Tony’s Trophy Race on the 11th of October and the Season Opening on Sunday the 13th of October.

Please make a note in your calendar if you (or your boat) have been rostered on for tower duty in Part 1 of the program.  If you can't see your name, you will feature in the second half of the season, published later in year.

Melbourne to Devonport ‘Rudder Cup’ (Friday 1 November)
What better way to spend your Melbourne Cup long weekend than competing in one of the most iconic events on the Australian sailing calendar! The Melbourne to Devonport ‘Rudder Cup’ is the oldest ocean race in Australia but features a youthful spirit and energy amongst competing crew, on full display during a warm reception hosted by Mersey Yacht Club. This race is also a qualifying event for the upcoming Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’. Entries are now open!  www.orcv.org.au/devonport

Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’ (Friday 27 December)
The  ORCV ‘Westcoaster’ is a legendary yacht race where tactics and sailing well can crown you as the race champion, regardless of boat size. Across the 435nm passage, yachts contend first with Bass Strait before taking on the wilderness and ruggedness of the West Coast of Tasmania and the long ocean swell of the Southern Ocean before turning towards the finish line and the shifting winds of the Derwent. For more than 50 years, the Westcoaster has provided sailors with a unique race full of tactical challenges. Entries are now open!  www.orcv.org.au/hobart
