Lake Boga Easter Regatta 2023

This years convoy to Lake Boga, just 15km shy of Swan Hill, on the shores of the immaculately grassed lake was bigger than ever. An estimated 50 members converged on the Lake Boga Yacht Club (LBYC) for their annual Easter regatta. The attraction of this regatta is that it is generally 4-5 degrees warmer than Melbourne, dry and offers all that you could wish for when going to a sailing regatta. The convenience of camping next to the lake, your boat just a stone throw away from what is now a permanently full lake. The LBYC offers such wonderful country hospitality and this year the sailing was the highlight.

With a cold front sweeping across the state in time for Easter, this was a fair departure from the balmy high 20’s to low 30’s of the previous 10 years, with sketchy wind that always delivered an unexpected lay day. This year however we were treated to rain for the first time in 10 years (albeit just 4mm on Good Friday) and solid south - south- westerly breezes ranging from 10-30knts. On flat water, this provided all sailors with some exciting reaching opportunities. A 7 race regatta was achieved, with all races being sailed to full distance. On the South side of the lake, the catamaran fleet was separated from the monohull fleet to the North of the Lake, and just as well as the foiling cats and IQ Foiling Boards were buzzing around, taking out unsuspecting Optimist Dinghy Sailors and Carp en route to their respective start lines. The Saturday morning back to back races were taxing for the entire fleet, with many of the 90 strong fleet opting to take a breather on Sunday morning. The sailing was tight and well contested over both fleets with the Safety Beach Sailing Club contingent ( 20% of the total fleet) coming up trumps in a few divisions.

Congratulations to the following members (and a soon to be new member) David Brewer 1st in the big Cats Bill Manning 1st in Sabre Division 4 Mark and Oliver Bulka in Tasar Division 8 Liv/Gary Cameron 1st 420 Class (soon to be new members) It was great to see such a large youth turnout from our club, in fact we were the only club with such a youth contingent, all get along and have fun.

The parents of this group organised mass catering for the three nights including Paella on the Friday night (it’s fair to say that maybe we’re all going to hell, as there was not a bit of seafood to be seen in that Paella), Lamb Gyros and Souvlakis on the Saturday Night and the mother of all grazing tables on Sunday night. Bring on a warmer 2024 with an even larger Safety Beach Sailing Club turnout!

We look forward to seeing you all at this meeting on Sunday 30 April, prior to the 1.00pm Club Championship Race.

Your attendance is very important as the focus will be to update you all on the new Sailor App. The App will be implemented for all Keelboat Races through winter (in parallel with Top Yacht), and then ongoing into next summer season (replacing the Top Yacht system).

Like many other Apps, Sailor App is user friendly, and all skippers will be required to use the App when racing to:

enter a race (sign-on)
access the course number
get your individual boat’s countdown clock
update your boat/crew information
access results

The aim of this Skippers and Crew Meeting is to get you ‘up and running’ with the App and answer any questions, as we make this transition to a more streamlined racing system. Further information (including the first step of downloading the App) will follow prior to the meeting.

Hi there Gang, not a lot to report on this week I'm afraid.

Sunday started out nice and sunny with very little wind in the morning, but the breeze picked up a bit in the afternoon. Not a howling gale that's for sure, but enough to get a couple of races in. With Geoff E away officiating at another regatta, Ross M, AKA 'The Cisco Kid', stepped in as RO for the day. Now Ross runs a pretty tight ship so it was not a good idea to leave the beach too late as the first race started bang on time.

We started the day with good old course 5 and it was nice to have a triangle or two again to get those screaming reaches going ( a little bit of wishful thinking there ). A fairly steady breeze kept the fleet of 20 boats bunched up in there respective divisions for most of the race and in Div 2, a trio of young guys from Greg's Green Fleet in one of the Quests even managed to keep on the same leg as Bill M,the Gingerbread Man. These guys have only sailed a couple of times, but even managed to get the kite up and down without any major problems. I'm putting that down to the excellent coaching they are getting in the morning.

With the course length set nicely for a 30 minute race, the last boat had barely crossed the finish line when the flags went up for race two, and it started off much the same as race one- until. Yep, there's always an 'until', and this one came in the form of a bunch of holes all over the course just waiting to swallow up the unwary sailor. It was nothing to be zipping happily along only to come to a dead stop while you watched your compadres, not 50 metres away, sail along oblivious to your plight. The crowning glory of these holes came in the second half of the race with a bunch of Div two boats all coming around the bottom mark all falling in a really big flat spot then watching Gingerbread Bill half way up the course hiking out on a 30 degree lift! The breeze finally caught up to them only to leave them motionless right next to the top mark. The next batch hauled them in only to have another 30 degree shift bugger up their passing manoeuvre big time.

On finally making around the mark, Mark Lawrence, sitting comfortably on station in Woodsy, was heard to offer up some encouragement with, "Tough day at the office boys!" Always the master of the understatement is Mark. With two races under the belt and the breeze fading a bit, Ross pointed us to the shore for an early day to let those heading up to Lake Boga plenty of time to pack their bags.

Other things of note was the return of Campbell and Emma M after Campbell's fall and six broken ribs edging out Greg and James in the Tasars and Taipan Tony borrowing an A class cat to try a different method of not going around the buoys. Hmm, A class Tony just doesn't have the same ring to it though.

Many thanks to this weeks race team of Ross and Deirdre on Start, Mark L and Nick M in Woodsy and Rob F with Jess L in Sutherland. With Nick and Jess on duty and most of the other 420s away at the Schools Racing at Mornington, Zac and Finn got some pretty good one on one coaching from Matilda in the white rhib coach boat. She was also helping out the other 'Greenies' where ever she saw the need. I'm hoping to get a Bio up on Matilda to introduce her to the rest of the members who may not have had the pleasure of meeting her yet.

That's enough for now, have a great Easter. And to those of you lucky buggers heading off to Boga, I hope the Bluebird of Happiness turns into an emu and kicks yer dunny down!

School Sailing States

Hi Everyone, it is Abbey.

Last weekend was the School Sailing States! This 3 day regatta was held at Mornington Yacht Club and consisted of around 20 teams and over 150 races. Thank you so much to our one and only Geoff for being Race Officer and making this event run smoothly. Thanks to Deirdre who was also on the start boat and any other SBSC volunteer for their efforts.

Aurelia and Kristen both competed for St Leonard’s College, with their team ending up in the top 8 of Div 2. They competed EXTREMELY well! Aurelia’s favourite word in the dictionary is definitely ‘PROTEST’. I sailed for the Peninsula seconds, and I finely had the thrill of coming first in races – as Nick was not there to beat me!! Overall, it was an amazingly fun weekend with lots of lollies and uno games played on the pier. I personally think that Geoff should have SABOTAGED the other teams by recalling them at the start and letting Aurelia, Kristen and I win; that sounds fair to me!

Hey Guys and Gals.

Great sailing last Sunday for those that took the chance on the breeze coming in. After a change in racing for the keelboats, where they were going to have an on water start with a 2.5 nautical mile (5 km) windward return course with the upwind mark set by one of our rhibs, and a shared start line with the OTB fleet (not at the same time!), the wind direction put a stop to that. As it was an offshore breeze, that meant the bottom mark start line would have been 5 Km's off shore !!! "No way Jose", said RO Geoff. So the keelboat gang settled for a tower start, and quite a spectacle it was, as they all seemed to be bunched up about 50 metres off the shore and traveling very slowly along the beach. I'll bet there are some great photos taken from the deck.

They all got away eventually and a small shiver of wind came in to tempt the die hard OTB's off the beach. Bill Manning jumped into a 420 with Abby Everett which left His rocket ship Sabre languishing on the beach all rigged up with nowhere to go. So not to let a chance to drive a Sabre much faster than mine, I pounced on Bill's offer to take it out for a spin. It wasn't so quick after all; it took half an hour to get out to the start line! That being the case, the twenty or so boats out there were treated to a absolute floater for race one. The little breeze that was there seemed to be constantly changing it's mind, "Do I want to blow this way? Do i want to blow that way? Or do I just want to sit on the beach and not blow at all?" Honestly, that wind could have been a politician, it just did not want to commit to anything solid! We finally got a finish at around 60 minutes race time, very close to being timed out. Remember your sailing instructions; 60 minutes time limit for the first boat of each class, then the rest have 10 minutes to finish. After that it's bad luck Chuck, try again next race!

After the obligatory pause to rearrange the marks, miracle of miracles, the wind picked right up and even stayed reasonably true to the course! So with that, race two was a cracker. Well, it was compared to race one anyway, and Bills rocket ship even fired up it's second stage and showed me what it could really do when I stopped trying to tell it which way to go. All agreed it was much better to have the good race second rather than have good first race followed by a floater and then that looong trip back to the beach. Or even worse, a tow home, oh the shame!

Our champion Race Team this week of the always laughing Geoff Eldridge, the ever popular Deirdre Snooks, Andrew Mono Martin and Rob Campbell, was augmented with the effervescent Charlie Mackie steering Woodsy for Mono and newish member, David Jones helping out Rob in Sutherland. David is one of the Keelboat gang and he was kind enough to offer his services as the original keelboat course called for a fair commitment from the rhib crew to lay that outer mark and still be back in time to set the OTB course, then go back out to retrieve that mark at the end of the day. As it was, he was called upon to help out with some of the newbies in their first time out on the race course. As they found themselves a bit out of their depth, Dave was on hand with some valuable coaching to set them straight. Thanks Dave, if "Empara" is ever laid up in dry dock ,you are always welcome to come out with us.

This Sunday is the last sail before Easter and guest RO will be Ross Martin. Ross is bound to set a great course so be sure to get amongst it. As there is no sailing over Easter, this will be your last chance to sail for a couple of weeks (unless you are one of the lucky buggers going to Lake Boga!)

Twilight Pursuit Series #2

Last Friday was the final race of Series #2. Congratulations to Rob Rainsford and crew on Yknot who took out first place, closely followed in 2^nd place by Crowded House, and Ghost in 3^rd place.

Margaret Hollamby Female Helm Series

This summer we had 14 yachts compete in the Female Helm Series over three twilight races. Glenys Hitchen (helming on Christela) took out 1^st place in Race 3 last Friday night. Overall, Jacqui Bange on Fransiska was the Series Winner, followed by Glenys Hitchen and Fiona Jones tied for 2^nd place. Congratulations to all.

Hey there OTB Gang, how did you enjoy last Sunday's racing?

Although I did promise fair winds and sunshine, at least we got the fair winds. An on water start for the keelboats meant the race team was out early to set the start marks for the big boats and it was quite a sight to see them all heading off into the distance. Ours was a much closer thing, just near the mussel farm, and that's far enough for this little black duck to wander away from the beach.

We had a good sized fleet this week with 23 boats competing. Well, 22 plus Taipan Tony who still managed to make it around the course without actually going around any of the marks! Having said that though, there were several Sabres that thought they had finished race one but forgot that course two is an upwind finish and were happily doodling around waiting for the next race until it was pointed out they, err, we, hadn't finished yet. And as you only have 10 minutes from the first boat crossing the line to get a score, they, err, we, had better pull our collective fingers out!

Now 23 boats is not too bad, but what makes it better is that we had that number without any Tasars, were still down a few Sabres and half of the regular A Class guys. The rigging yard was full of happy campers setting up at the start of the day and it was a really great atmosphere. A lot of this, I'm sure, is due to the exuberance of youth, with our group of dedicated 420 sailors fresh from their success in the State titles held at SBSC the week before. The 420 numbers are growing each week, and this week we had potential new members, Father and Son, James and Nathan Anderson. James hasn't sailed for 20 years, so he was a bit rusty and even fell out at one stage which led to one of Greg L and James E's fifth rescues of the day as the trusty 420 sailed on with complete newbie Nathan in full panic mode. Talking to James A afterward, he said they loved every minute ( not so sure about Nathan, but he'll come around ).

This week was a Club Championship race and RO Geoff set two windward-Leeward courses in wind that varied from 5 to 15 knots with lots of swings for our sailing pleasure. Now, I don't know if you have been checking the scores on the Sailor app lately, but with only a potential four Championship races left, the series is wide open with the regular Champs nowhere to be seen. So it's not to late to make a charge for the podium and get your name forever etched onto that big shiny cup. Even Taipan Tony could do it if he can just figure out those marks, well maybe next year!

That's about it for this week, many thanks to Geoff and Deirdre on Start, Andrew Mono Martin, Aurelia Martin and Rob C in Woodsy and the Dynamic Duo, Greg L and James E in Sutherland. James said afterward that they had such a ball herbing around helping people that they want to do rhib duty every week as its much more fun than watching Ross and Mono's sterns all the time!

The Australian Masters Games (AMG) is a week-long festival of sport that brings together weekend warriors from around Australia, and the world, to enjoy an extensive sporting and social program at the spiritual home. Junior Keelboat Night

Weather conditions were perfect last Friday night for our annual Junior Keelboat night. Thank you to the keel boats that volunteered to take the juniors, Crowded House skipper Dave Lorimer (who dropped the kids back at beach like rockstars!), 11:11 skipper Till Braukmann who let Mika and Jamieson skipper whole race, and Fransiska skipper Peter Morrison. From all accounts the juniors had a great time and cannot wait to do it again. If any skippers need junior crew, I'm sure some of these juniors would love to go out again.

This is the last race of the Margaret Hollamby Female Helm Series, which is held in conjunction with our normal Friday Pursuit Race, so all yachts are welcome to sail on Friday night – with or without a female helm. The rules are:

When signing on for the race with the tower on VHF 69, please advise that the yacht will be entering the Female Helm Series, and provide the name of the nominated female helm.
Helming is not restricted to one female during the race.
If not a member of SBSC, we ask that they register for a Sail Pass at no charge. Sail Passes are available here

As communicated to skippers last week, we are trialling a modified windward / leeward course for the Club Championship race this Sunday. The Special Course Sheet is on the website (or click here)

Key points:

Boat start line position will remain unchanged for both KBs and the OTBs racing that day
The finish will be Tower / Green pile, after rounding Yellow pile (to minimise interactions with OTB fleet)
OTB course area will be located between start and KB bottom gate
The number of laps varies for Div. 1 and Div. 2
Course will only be used if winds are on-shore winds. (If off-shore wind then course number will change)
This is a pilot trial and feedback is welcome

Brass Monkey Winter Pursuit Series

The BMWP Series program is now available on the website (click here).

The Winter Series races are held fortnightly on Sunday mornings – running from 21 May to 10 September (with scheduled resail on 17 September).

Thanks to everyone volunteering their time to help in the tower over winter – both Race Officers and Assistants – so we can all get our winter sailing fix!
