Brass Monkey Winter Series (BMWS) starts this Sunday!

We would love to see plenty of boats out there competing in the first winter race.  If you are new to the winter series, please read the Sailing Instructions.
Key things to note are:
  • Fortnightly Sunday morning racing
  • Pursuit/Tower starts
  • Advise tower when signing on if intending to use a Spinnaker/Code Zero
(a 4 minute time penalty will be added to your pursuit start time)
  • Short courses – 8 to 9 nM
  • Race time limit – 3 hours and 30 minutes
As communicated to you all a couple of weeks ago, the development of the Keelboat Module of SailorApp has been suspended at this time, so the Race Management of the 2023 BMWS will now remain unchanged from last year (using TopYacht in the Tower).  Please therefore proceed with the normal practise of signing on with the Tower prior to your start on Channel 69.
If any skippers would like to race but don’t have enough crew, please let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Off The Beach News

And just like that, it's over!
Seven whole months have whizzed by in what seems the blink of an eye. From the Commodore's Cup on the 9th of October to last Sunday the 7th of May- POOF!, gone, see ya later alligator! And what do we have to show for it? Welllll, there was some really nice weather, some times not enough to sail so you had to spend the afternoon on the deck with friends. Oh yeah, and there was a ripper sail around to Mount Martha one week where our sailing skills really shone through. Annnd, there was Sail Peninsula, while not an OTB event, it did highlight our Club to all the others as a premier spot to come to. Ooh, ooh, we did have the 420 State titles which was a fantastically run event thanks to all the willing helpers that always put their hands up. Throw into that lot, there were plenty of cracking sailing days. Overall, there were probably fewer non sailing days than other years especially when you think, " Hey, no Covid lockdowns!" Wasn't that fun? Let's hope we never have to go through that again.

Back to happier memories. We saw an epic bunch of young sailors take to the water in an ever growing fleet of 420's that is the envy of all the local clubs. The Mount Martha officials commented on how great it was to see so many two handed boats we had and how well they sailed. These guys and gals really have done a remarkable job this season, not just at home but at many other regattas as well, including the recent youth event at Sorrento that saw Abbey E and Matt W take out first place overall. We also had quite a few visiting sailors show upon different occasions; Javelins, B14's, 125's as well as others and they all commented on how well things were run and how welcoming SBSC is.

As usual, there was a few bods changing boat types, notably Glenn L and Ewan C moving from B14's to A class cats. This gave Taipan Tony more people to chase, which he did in his classic style- inside the marks, upside down and skimming the rock wall ( also upside down ). A little birdie told me that Tony might be looking at an A class for next year. Hmm, I'm not sure that 'A class Anthony' has quite the same ring to it.

I suppose I should get back to last Sunday, which was our final sail for the 22/23 Summer season. For those of you that braved the chilly start, we were treated to what all agreed was our bestest sail of the season. The wind was strong to be sure, but it didn't get over 22 knts and averaged around 15 to 18 knots dipping as low as 10 occasionally. A 160 degree average direction gave us flat-ish water and full sun all day made for cheesy grins. Paul F and Craig G were flying in their Javelin. Paul commented later that as fast as they were, the 420's were actually out pacing them at times and sailing beautifully in the strong conditions. The only incident was Steph and Kristen K tipping in and Kristen copping a boom to the noggin. Glenn L was there in a rhib pronto and assessed the situation, sending them back to the beach for safety's sake. A full incident report was made later, so we even got practice in that.

Nine boats ventured out, two Sabres, two Tasars, three 420s a Javelin and Murray M in his Laser. All had the great time, leaving a few on the beach regretting that they coulda, shoulda but didn't. Gingerbread Bill Manning ventured over to the other side of the Bay for Sail Bellarine, where he placed a creditable 5th in the fleet of 20 Sabres. They had a mixed fleet of 155 boats all up but only managed two races on Saturday and none on Sunday. They should have come to SBSC where we had ( did i mention it ) THE BEST SAIL OF THE SEASON! Thanks this week to Glenno Lazzar, Ewan Campbell with Zac Lowe and Finn Meijer in the rhibs. And of course the incomparable Dierdre Snooks and RO Geoff Eldridge on start.

I know I mention it every week, but without Geoff and Deirdre showing up every week to run the races we would be in a very sad place. It's not just the on water stuff, it's Geoff's commitment to setting up the race beforehand, Dierdre being the first one at the boat dock getting the boats ready and then staying out on the water entering the results before coming in to help wash down and pack up the boats, every week! Thank you both for making my job so easy it pales into insignificance. Thanks also to all the volunteers who have put up their hands, or not baulked when I've put the hard word on them at the last moment. Luckily that didn't happen too often this year. I can't not mention that Bad Man, Rob Campbell, who is always willing to help out driving the rhibs as well as spending a lot of time maintaining all the power boats, it's a never ending task. I know I've missed a lot of people that put in an enormous amount of work so we can all enjoy a Sunday sail, so thanks to all of you.

Now is your chance to say thanks as well by putting in your nomination for Club Person of the Year, both Junior and Senior. If you can't decide on one person, name two- or more by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. One last thing before I sign off for this season, I know I said it was a bit chilly on Sunday but I think Glenn might have been bunging it on a bit thick when he sent me a selfie he took of himself and Ewan heading around to the boat shed on his scooter. See what you think.

Cheers for now and see you at Presentation, Pete Chippy

We hope you are all enjoying a couple of weeks off sailing but also looking forward to the Brass Monkey Winter Series, starting on Sunday 21 May.  See Winter Program on the website and further details will be provided next week.

We are also looking for volunteers for the inaugural Winter Fun Friday Series.  The first race is planned for Friday 26 May, and every fortnight thereafter (9 races).  If this series is to go ahead, we will need to develop a Tower Duty Roster in the next 2 weeks.  So we are looking for people to help out (either occasionally or regularly) if they are available for a few hours every second Friday afternoon from 26 May to 8 September.  Please let us know before 19 May via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  If we don’t get enough people to help with tower duty we will have to defer the Friday series.

What's On

 this weekends happenings may 4th 7th 2023sunday sounds 21 may 2023

Off The Beach News

Howdy Cowdys,
We're nearly at the finish line of the 22/23 summer season and we're determined to go out with a bang! Last Sunday's sail was a ripper. While it may have lacked a decent breeze, it was still a glorious day on the water. We had 24 boats out including three visitors from Black Rock in 125's and a Sabre.

The day started early for the race team as it was an on water start for the keelboats which meant getting their start line set for 13.30 and then re-jigging the  wing, top and bottom marks in quick time for the OTB start. This was made so much easier by using the BuoyZone app which RO Geoff has taken to like the proverbial duck to water. Once Geoff has entered the course, set the length he wants and the wind direction, he pushes the share button and Zing! its sent straight to the rhibs who just have to drive to where the little blue dot says to go. Just like using google maps, or watching your Uber Eats coming down the street! At this stage we are using member's personal phones but the plan is for the Club to purchase dedicated devices for the job now that we know how well the system works. I'd also like to acknowledge the help of Bruce Mansfield in getting Buoyzone in use earlier in the season. Geoff had been wanting to use it for a while but the extra voice of Bruce with his experience with the app at Williamstown was kick needed to get it going.

As it was a Keelboat start, it was really nice to have a couple of our Keelboat brethren on the rhibs. Steve Daniels is a long time SBSC member and has helped out many times before and with him was our Illustrious Vice Commodore, John Matheson out for his first (but not last) go course laying. Many thanks to those guys as well as Deirdre, Geoff and Drew M, whom I co-opted at late notice so other bods could go sailing in the last Club Championship race.

As I said earlier, it was a beautiful day on the water even though the breeze failed us in the end  and after a lot of soul searching we had to abandon race two. Still, having said that, race one was  a beaut. Looking on from the sidelines, and watching the clock tick towards the sixty minute cut off, I was sure we wouldn't get a finish. But owing to the breeze picking up slightly nearly all the boats got a hooter( except those that left the beach a bit late- no names but you know who you are Katrina).Even Taipan Tony got around all the marks to lead Div 6 over the finish line. Pity he lead everyone over the start line too, he even beat the hooter and cries of "Come back Tony! " had no effect, He had his eye on the prize and there was no stopping that crazy guy!

Back in the yard and everyone was happy with the day. The Black Rock visitors were by all accounts highly impressed with our club and hung around for quite a while after sailing to chat about our proposed winter series. This seems to be gathering momentum and several other clubs have shown interest in joining in including the Javelin gang that came to play last week. After Mono's chat in the rigging yard before sailing this week lots of you have put up your hands to help run the races as well as sail. This is the only way this series can go ahead as its a lot of work to organize and six people on start / rhibs for a few yachts isn't viable, so thanks to everyone who has volunteered.

Nearly there! One last thing before I sign off. As it's almost the end of the season and as Presentation Day is looming (proposed date being Saturday 1st July), it's time to put your thinking caps on and have a thought about who you would like to nominate for Club Person of the year, both Junior and Senior. There are lots of people who do an extraordinary job all year to make this Club of ours the success it is and now is your chance to say thanks. So please take a moment to recognize that effort and vote for someone that you think most deserves it. They might not win but just being acknowledged is enough to give them the warm and fuzzies. Submit your entries to the club secretary Mem on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

That's all for now, see you all next Sunday for the best sailing day of the year, I promise.
Cheers, Pete Chippy

Sadly the Summer Sailing Season of 22/23 season is ending on May 8th. We have all had a great year.

As You know Yard Storage also ends on the 31st May.During the winter we allow the grass to grow and do essential maintenance. Therefore we kindly request all craft to be removed from the yard by May 31st.

The exception to this rule is people who will be using their craft during the winter - eg  Winter sailing series participants.
Any craft left in the yard after the 31st of May will be required to pay Winter Storage fees, which is the same cost as Summer Storage fees.

Skipper & Crew Meeting

Big thank you to all those Skippers and Crews that attended the meeting on Sunday morning.

The main feature of the meeting was the presentation from Peter Merritt on Sailor App and Club Ops which is the new entry and result system that we will be introducing for the Brass Monkey Winter Series.  Peter provided a great insight into the operation of this new system from a skippers / crew perspective.  More details will be sent out prior to the first race on the 21st May so that everyone is up to speed on how to use the Sailor App which we believe will be a great tool for the keelboat fleet and also make life a lot simpler for our race management team.

This winter we are proposing some casual style racing on a Friday afternoon.  A good level of interest was shown at the meeting.  It is envisaged that these races will be a pursuit format and held on alternate Fridays to the BMWS races. To run these races we will be looking to have the Race Officer for the day operating from one of the yachts participating but will also be looking for a volunteer for each race to man the tower – if you are able to help out in the tower please let us know by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  More details will be sent out shortly.

MOB practice requirements for the 2023-24  were discussed as this will become a mandatory requirement for the 2023-24 summer season.

Brass Monkey Winter Pursuit Series (BMWPS)

Now that the summer season is behind us, we all have a few weeks off before commencing the Brass Monkey Winter Series.  For those of you who haven’t participated before, some great sailing can be had in the winter months – it’s just like Friday twilight racing with an extra layer!  The Winter Series will be conducted using Sailor App (which you should all have downloaded by now), and this will be a great opportunity for you to become familiar racing with the App before next summer.

See Winter Program on the website, and further details can be found in the Sailing Instructions.  Key things to note are:

  • Series commences Sunday 21 May
  • Fortnightly Sunday morning racing
  • Pursuit/Tower starts
  • Races will be run using the Sailor App (incl. sign on, course number, your individual pursuit start time countdown)
  • Spinnakers may be used, with a 4-minute time penalty added to your pursuit start time
  • Short courses – 8 to 9 NM
  • Race time limit – 3 hours and 30 minutes

MOB – This is not a Practice

An article worth reading.  Brings home how easy it is for things to go pear shaped, and lessons learnt from the rescue yacht perspective.  Happened only a few weeks ago off Seattle with 3 people (all from same family) going overboard at once during a broach. All made it ok but it was a close call for one with hypothermia, click here for full story.

Meet the Committee

Treasurer

I’m Di Allan, the Treasurer of SBSC. I moved to Dromana in July 2020, and was keen to get involved in the local community. Mem Mackie invited me to the club, and I felt this was a place where I could meet people and experience the offerings of a seachange. I learned the club was looking for a new Treasurer and with my accounting background, and ceasing full time work, was happy to take on this role.

I became Treasurer in July 2021 and have worked with the Executive Committee taking on the duties required, to meet all financial requirements. This has given me the opportunity to meet a group of likeminded people, who are all volunteering their time to give back to the community.

Things constantly change, and now I have with three granddaughters that I am looking after on a permanent basis, while their parents return to work. This requires me to drive to the Eastern suburbs and I find myself with less free time.  As a result, I will be stepping down as Treasurer at the AGM in July and ask for expressions of interest for someone to take on the role. Ideally, someone who has access to a computer, as much of my time is spent updating Xero, our accounting system, and paying bills. I would be happy to chat with anyone who wants more details. Rear Commodore Mutterings

Dear members,

As we approach the end of the summer season, please note that Presentation night has been locked in for the 3rd of June. Please keep an eye out in the news for further updates.

Last weekend many of our youth entered the AS Vic State Youth Championships held at SSCBC, preceded by two days of coaching. The event saw 142 competitors from around the country descend on the southern tip of the peninsula to contest what was a very disappointing regatta, through no one’s fault apart from Mother nature. She really let everyone down. Our contingent of 420’s sailed/raced a total of 20 minutes for one shortened course race which saw 7 of the 11 420’s OCS due to the strong 4knt tide, pulling the majority of the fleet over the line prematurely during U flag. That however was enough to see our sailors finish 1st, 4th and 5th respectively and was enough to see Abbey Everett and Matt Whitaker win the 420 division after AS changed the sailing instructions to allow for a 1 race series. The entire 420 Youth Squad who travelled from Sydney managed to return home with tail between their legs, with not much more than a brass razoo. It really was a big disappointment for all involved. Happily and quite incredibly, we enjoyed 5-12knts from the SE on Sunday for 2 beautiful races just 15km away from Sorrento.

This Winter the sailing committee is looking at holding a winter series for OTB to coincide with the KB Brass Monkey Series. This series will only proceed if we get volunteers to help run the races. With Geoff away, we will need an RO and 4 Volunteers each week to ensure we get all the infrastructure we need to safely run racing. If you can help please reach out to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If no-one reaches out then this quite simply won’t happen. My aim is to run 3 races per session and invite neighboring clubs to join us to ensure viable numbers on the race course. The start time will be at 10.30am each day. The race schedule will be: Sunday June 18th Sunday July 2nd Sunday July 16th Sunday July 30th Sunday August 13th Sunday August 24th (Re-sail if Required) A reminder that there will be a skipper and crews meeting at the club this Sunday for all Keel Boat members. This will be a forum to discuss the new sailor app, MOB, Volunteers etc…… Please be at the club by 10.00am.

We are still seeking a sponsor to help with the youth training program for next year. Juniors and youth are the grass roots of our clubs future, so if you can help support our youth and are willing to sponsor the appointment of Matilda Richardson as coach for 2023/24, then please let me know. Sponsorship is $5000.00 and I’m pretty sure that’ll include membership. All and any offers will be gratefully received at This email address is being protected from spambots. Off The Beach News

Hi gang, just a quick one this week.

A really nice sail was had last Sunday by those that were there, about eleven SBSC boats and five visiting Javelins checking out the waters prior to us hosting their upcoming Nationals at Christmas. The wind was fairly light but better than we thought it was going to be so that was a bonus. As usual there were plenty of shifts to lure in the unsuspecting and a change of finish direction for the second race lured in the whole fleet as we all finished a lap too soon! As per the course instructions, if its an offshore wind and we change to a windward finish, it means that we sail an extra half a lap as we are going to have to sail back to shore anyway so why not add the extra leg. Simples says Geoff, but we all played follow the leader and shortened by a leg instead of lengthening after the first boat crossed the line and headed for home. Instead of disqualifying us all, Geoff said as we all sailed the same course, he would let it slide this once, but don't do it again!

Those Javelin guys have a good sense of humor too. After rounding the top mark on one leg one of the skippers fell off the back of his boat while the spinnaker was up. By the time his crew pulled up the skipper was about fifty metres back and had to swim to catch up. Just as he was about to put his hand on the transom, the boat took off and left him marooned again! I'm sure the crew had nothing to do with it either, real sure!

This week there was only one Taipan on the water and as he didn't need to follow anyone, Taipan Tony actually went around ALL the buoys. Tony also mentioned that he was sad that I didn't state in a previous Enews that he actually went around some of the buoys upside down one week and that should count for extra points.

Ok, we are getting to the pointy end of the season now, only two sailing weeks left, so if you want to get your mitts on one of those shiny trophies you had better make the most of the next two Sundays. Next week is the last round of the Club Championship series, so I'm sure the will be a flurry of last minute argy bargy for that one so pleeease get your bum in a boat and join in.

Thanks this week to our epic race team. As usual, Geoff and Deirdre in start, while in the rhibs we had Gingerbread Bill Manning, Dapper Duncan McColl, fiery Phil Woolly and mellow Muzza McNeil. They even had to rescue the start boat after the anchor chain got caught up in the prop!

That will do for this week, see you on the water next Sunday, the weather will be perfect!

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Youth States News

Last week, the 420 juniors had a cracker of a time at Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club with a two day training event and a two day regatta. For the training, the coach was oddly obsessed with the bridle and we did so many spinnaker drills that we never want to do them again. For the regatta, there was extremely patchy, light winds and a strong tide. On the Saturday, little wind meant we jumped off the pier and completed one race at sunset. On the Sunday, there were two races started and both abandoned, both of which Aurelia and Kristen were thrashing most of the fleet. The last windward mark had all but four 420s unable to go around it due to the tide! Nick and Jess managed to round the mark before the wind died off completely, leaving me to hit the mark and do penalties (literally every single regatta I have to do a penalty). This day was abandoned at around 2.30pm, yet Zac, Finn, Matt and I did not get a tow in for around an hour and were past Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron by the time they picked us up!

Overall, we completed 1 race for the regatta (the SI changed so 1 race could be a regatta) and there were eleven 420s including the Australian Youth Squad (consisting of all NSW boats):
- Aurelia and Kristen did extremely well coming 2nd for Girls Teams and 4th overall.
- Zac and Finn came 3rd in the Boys or Mixed Teams and 5th overall.
- Nick and Jess were unfortunately over the start in that race, yet they raced extremely well and were beating the Australian Youth Sailing Team the majority of the time.
- Abbey and Matt came 1st in the Boys or Mixed Teams and 1st overall. This was only because the six boats in front of us in this race were all disqualified because they were over the start, so we won the only race by luck!
Overall, it was a great adventure and I look forward to winning again in the future.

OTB Club Championship Results and Scoring

Recently I understand there have been a few questions about the results of the Club Championship changing.  About a month ago Ewan Campbell did a review of the results and we realised there was a problem with them.

For the Club Championship, because ultimately we are comparing all boats regardless of the Division they sail in against one another the scoring system has to do a bit of mathematical gymnastics to calculate a result.  We have 2 courses we use for the Club Championship to cater for the different sailing characteristics of the boats in the fleet. Course 1 is a triangle and Course 2 a windward/leeward.  On each of these courses Divisions sail different numbers of laps.

When Ewan and I looked at the results a month ago we realised the first couple of races had the number of laps correct for each division and that a number of races just had 1 lap for a Division which skewed the results.  We therefore corrected the number of laps where they were wrong in races run to date and re-processed the results.

Keelboat News

With light winds forecast and a lack of sailing last weekend, we saw 13 boats take to the water for the last of the Sunday Summer Series Races for the 2022-23 season which was absolutely brilliant.
As forecast, the winds were light so short courses were selected for both Div 1 and Div 2.  From our viewing point in the tower, it looked like there were multiple lead changes to keep everyone on their toes and luckily we had sufficient wind to get all boats finished within the time limit, so another great day was had at SBSC.
As always a big thankyou to our Race Officer for the day Amanda Malin.

Dredging

Dredging in the channel inside Martha Cove will commence on or about the 26th April. There will be a dredge in the channel inside from the Coast Guard boat down to the second set of pens. Pipes will be running out of the marina to pump the sand. There will also be some equipment in the rigging area for a short period of time. The dredging is expected to go on for a month but should not inhibit yachts entering and exiting the marina.
