Winter Fun Friday Series (Race 4)

Many thanks to Andrew Arblaster (RO and tower) who again volunteered his time to help out in the tower.  And to the impromptu assistance of Greg and Dawn Clark.

Here is Andrew’s Race Report:
Despite a forecast of 20-25 knots, Race 4 of the Winter Fun Friday series started in 15-18 knots from the North West.  During the race the wind dropped to 10-12.  The course selected was Course 1.  Only 2 boats and 8 crew entered the race.  Winner of the ‘start of the day’ was Yknot at 7 seconds, with Marrakesh on 10 seconds.  Both yachts crossing the start line at full speed and improved on their times from the last race.

On the beat out to Marker 25, Yknot reduced their handicap margin from 4 to 2 minutes.  It was a fast reach to R1 with both boats recording speeds over 8 Knots.  On the run back to the finish, both boats had a Goosewing rig.  Just after Martha Point, Yknot gybed to starboard and crossed the stern of Marrakesh, taking the inside position for the yellow pile.  Good work by the crew on the foredeck of YKnot enabled the boat to maintain momentum and they passed Marrakesh to leeward.  At the yellow pile YKnot had opened a lead of 30 seconds, and at the finish this lead had increased to 41 Seconds.  It was good close racing with an elapsed time of 1 hour 14 minutes.

Greg and Dawn Clark, owners of the classic yacht ‘Christela’ assisted in the tower.  They had recently returned from Europe where Greg sailed a Finn in the World Masters at Nea Iraklitsa, Kavala Greece.  Greg was 4th out of 9 Australian entrants and finished in the first half of a 145-boat fleet in a light wind regatta. A great result in a boat that is very difficult to sail well.

Looking forward to more entrants for the next race on 21st July.   Further details and start-sheet will be published next week.
