420 States Report

Hi everyone, it is Abbey.

Safety Beach just held the 420 State titles on the weekend! Overall, the regatta had perfect weather conditions, ranging from a few nail bitting gusts to the feeling of moving backwards. A huge thank you to Erik for building this regatta up from scratch as it ran perfectly and was so much fun! Hats off to the RO, Geoff, for putting on wonderful weather and setting an amazing course. Thank you to Bill Manning, Drew Mattingley, Mark Lawrence, Andrew Clark, Peter Chipperfield and Deirdre Snooks for being on the support and start boat, and thanks to everyone in the tower. Thank you to Matilda Richardson and Stuart Richardson for their supreme coaching. Many thanks to David Snooks and his Catering staff for their wonderful dinner on Sunday night and the canteen service. I believe that DOUGHNUT BALLS should be mandatory on the menu because they were delicious. Special thanks to all of the parents for supporting all the kids throughout the weekend!

Overall, eleven 420s were out on the water and twelve races were completed. Here are the results:

· Nick Meijer and Jessica Lowe placed 2nd overall and 1st in the Mixed Teams.

· Abbey Everett and Matthew Whitaker came 5th overall and won Most Improved.

· Aurelia Martin and Kristen Koutsimpiris came 8th overall and 3rd in the Female Teams.

· Zac Lowe and Finn Meijer came 10th overall and 3rd in the Male Teams.

Now for the detailed events (my favourite part as they include lots of exclamation marks!!!!!). On the first day, light winds did not hold back NICK AND JESS AS THEY CAME 1ST IN A RACE! They were absolutely FLYING, so congratulations on this gigantic achievement. Nick and Jess were able to wear the bright blue second place bibs for the entire regatta. Kristen kicked off the regatta with her signature handstand on trapeze. Zac and Finn also pulled out their brand new red spinnaker which I got the privilege to touch (and I even held back the strong urge to sabotage them, so I am very proud of my restraint).

The second day brought a lot more wind and the 420s were a sight to see. I really should have called protest on Nick and Jess because they were so far in front of everyone else that they must have magical powers of teleportation or a motor under their boat. The funniest part of the day was when someone told all of the juniors that dinner was ready and we all literally ran up the stairs! If only we had that determination to get to the start line in the races as we did to get to the front of the buffet cue, we could all be Olympians!

Before the races on the last day, Zac had a MAGNIFICENT fall out of the boat due to faulty toe ropes, with the boat only saved from capsizing by Finn frantically uncleating the jib. Everyone competed extremely well this day. On the other hand, due to a 720 penalty (my second one of the regatta) on the start line, I came dead last in the last race of the regatta! This was of course on purpose, as I was letting people beat me because I am a nice person. Although, I do not believe Chippy and Bill with ever let me forget it (Chippy, I can sense you laughing at me). After much cheering in the presentations, the regatta was complete! There is really something special about holding a regatta at your own club.

Thanks for reading my OTB report that somehow turned into an 700 word essay and I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend for Club Championship. Racing starts at 2pm, however, try sailing for juniors will be running in the morning with Greg Lowe, so bring all of your kids/grandkids in the morning for a fun sailing adventure. I will sign off by saying that I would really appreciate if everyone in Div 2 either capsizes or crashes into buoys on Sunday so I can win, thanks.

OTB Captains Report

Howdy OTB gang.

Well as you've probably already read in other reports, the 420 State titles were a howling success. This was as much to do with the exceptional race Management and the fantastically dedicated parents as it was to the group of very talented young sailors from ours and other Clubs.

These parents should be justifiably proud of their kids, but rightfully proud of themselves as well for supporting and encouraging their charges to keep going in a sport that is simultaneously healthy, environmentally friendly and inclusive in all ways. It was great to see all the competitors talking and mucking about together both on the water and off, without any of the nastiness or big headedness you see in some other sports, just kids having fun. This is a credit to the parents, as the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and it seems like we've got a pretty good orchard.

I won't go too much as I'm sure Abbey will have written a cracking report with all the juicy details and thanking all the people involved ( and there were a lot!).

Now as of this week, there are only seven, yes, SEVEN ! sailing Sundays left, not counting Easter at Lake Boga. "That can't be right!" I hear you say, and I sure hope I've miscounted. But the simple fact is, if you haven't got your bum wet yet or at least slightly damp, you are running out of time in a hurry. The last few weeks have had some glorious sailing days and there are more to come. So come on out, join in with these youngsters who are giving us oldies a run for our money and some of that youthful exuberance is bound to rub off. You can't buy that stuff, even though Big Pharma is trying to. Come to SBSC and get it for free!

Brass Monkey Winter Pursuit Series

The BMWP Series program is now available on the website (click here).

The Winter Series races are held fortnightly on Sunday mornings – running from 21 May to 10 September (with scheduled resail on 17 September).

Thanks to everyone volunteering their time to help in the tower over winter – both Race Officers and Assistants – so we can all get our winter sailing fix!

SBSC Cruise To Geelong

Eight boats participated in the Safety Beach to Geelong Cruise - Catamarans Whiskers, Vivant and Baruch and monos Christela, Summer Breeze, Joint Venture, Lumiere and Lunasea. What a fabulous weekend - great to have such a good turn out and to meet others in the club.

Our home for the weekend was the wave attenuator adjacent to Geelong yacht club called Wangin Walk. It's worth noting that you can tie up there at any time - it's under the control of the yacht club - and it can accommodate any number of boats. The weather certainly complied with the only complaint being that the wind was very light on the way across on Saturday but most boats managed a sail at the end. The venue for dinner - Wharf Shed - right opposite the wave wall proved to be a perfect choice as it accommodated us all and service was excellent. Sunday was spent independently exploring Geelong then another motor/sail on Monday back to the club. The wind sprang up from the SSE during the afternoon and gave us a fantastic sail back on the last leg.

In all, a very successful social event. If you missed the cruise this time, look out for the next one later in the year - possibly to Docklands.

Howdy Gang.

First up, thanks to Abbey Everett for writing last week's OTB report, she did a great job as I'm sure you'll all agree.
It was great to be back on the water this week after what seemed like a month of no sailing. Hang on a minute; it was a month of no sailing! No wonder we had a fair crowd of boats rigged up in the yard, everyone was itching to go after such a long break. Light winds delayed our start (surprise, surprise) and everyone was a bit complacent, so when RO Geoff called in to say they had enough breeze to start a race, rather than a flurry of activity it was more like a very low key Mexican wave. As far as LeMans starts go, this was an epic fail!
When we finally got our collective backsides out there (luckily the postponement flag was up) we were met with a nice little breeze and a start line ready to go. So we did. And all agreed that although it wasn't a bum clencher, it was very noice and a lot better than standing around the rigging yard. A slight delay to shift the course a bit and race two started in much the same way. That lasted about three and a half minutes. I know this because 30 seconds after the Div 2 start the wind picked right up and it turned into that bum clencher after all!
There were four 420 's out there and they were all having a blast, more out of control than in. Steph and Kristen K were roaring around with music blasting out and Kristen doing her signature reverse trapeze move with hands on the boat, feet in the air and in perfect control. I've seen Taipan Tony Rogers pulling the same manoeuvre, except it wasn't intentional and he wasn't in perfect control!
Other notables were Duncan M having a near miss with that visiting seal we've all heard about and Glenn L having a spectacular crash in Dave B's spare foiling A class Cat (really, who has a spare foiling A class laying around?). And last but not least was Doc Taylor who caused the wind to drop out by having his mast fall down all the way out at the windward mark. Huey must have thought " Well, he doesn't need his sail so they must be finished with the wind too". Some people will do anything for a tow back.

Junior Keel Boat Night

On Friday 17^th March we will be running the annual Junior Keel Boat Crew Night. This is a great opportunity for all SBSC Juniors to experience keelboat sailing and racing in a fun and safe environment. Approximate timing would be 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to come along (please note juniors 12 and under will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian). After the event, the juniors are welcomed back to the club for a meal (optional) to discuss their sailing adventure. Bookings for dinner are essential this year due to it corresponding with St Patrick's Day.

ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads – New Date: Sunday 2 April

“The Rip” is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6nm and provides a restricted tidal flow between the ocean and Port Phillip, where over 4,000 commercial vessels transit annually.

Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.

Sail Peninsula 2023

Sail Peninsula 2023 was another weekend of fun and fantastic sailing on our special part of the Bay. Feedback from competitors has been great and Sail Peninsula is growing in status as one of the must-do Bay regattas, with a number of ‘first-timers’ this year after hearing about SP from around the traps.

The three days produced a trifecta of weather; starting with a beautiful warm evening for the Friday twilight race, a wayward, messy, but still warm winds for the Saturday Passage race, and a nice solid SW to cap it off on Sunday. Fortunately there was only one parking lot – under Arthurs Seat on Saturday. And except for some pesky exceptions, the magical 20/20 Rule – nothing under 20degs and nothing over 20 knts – was a done deal. Sailing veterans do become true believers in this rule.

The Friday twilight drew 61 boats and the sight of a mass of boats bunched close behind as she finished was very impressive.

Saturday was the day when Huey, after a promising start, played hard to get. A brisk northerly and a few opted for reefs after pondering the what-ifs. Up around the jumping castle and one boat (remaining nameless) thought it looked nice and tried to drag it home. Luckily for all behind it didn’t stick and they were able to round a buoy that was still fixed to the planet, albeit in a different spot.

The wind swung on the nose to Blairgowrie and then started to peter out. Movements slowed, tense times. And then on the return, too close to Arthurs Seat, the usual Black Hole snared many for what seemed eternity, while the rest of the fleet behind slowly closed-up. Definitely a ‘DOH!’ day as the mixed-up fleet crept to the finish and welcome respite ashore.

Sunday really was the pick of the weather for racing. The cool change cured any dustiness from the night before, and even a few waves appeared – enough to tease the surfer types to point anywhere to catch a ride on the run home. A beautiful way to finish a great regatta.

Sail Peninsula Onshore Report

Friday evening was stunning - a nice breeze to keep us all a little cooler. All enjoyed a Greek style buffet back onshore from David & his team at Snooks Catering, whilst enjoying the awesome talent of “Dean & Carruthers”. Thank you to SBSC member, Joe Siliga of - McLardy McShane, Morning Peninsula - for sponsoring our Friday night pursuit race.

Saturday threw in a little challenge with the rain until it cleared later in the evening but it didn’t seem to put too much of a dampener on the night, with everyone enjoying another magnificent buffet and up dancing until late to “The Baker Boys” big band. They certainly gave us all a work out. What a night - thank you to Christoph & Barbara from The Original Spirit Co. for sponsoring our “Ginfusion Passage Race” and congratulations to all our winners who got to take home some terrific prizes. Speaking of prizes - our Auction went “off” with the aid of our talented MC, Keith Greaves and his very creative sales assistants Fiona & Greg Lowe, who had bids coming from every corner of the room. Well done guys ! Thanks to Sports Phillip Marine, Quantum Sails, The Boatyard, St. Andrew’s Beach Brewery & Provincia for their generous donations. Great to also have representatives from Berwick Land Rover, Australian Sailing, Phaedrus Estate & Martha Cove Marina, Quantum Sails & McLardy McShane present enjoying the festivities on the night also & without whose assistance we could not put on such a Regatta.

Sunday’s presentations back at the clubhouse were officiated again by our wonderful team, Ross Martin (SP Chair) and Andrew Clarke who kept it all running smoothly and believe you me - there were a lot to get through. Linda Wooley - your fantastic labels kept us all organised & on track. Thanks to Chris Parks and his media team from “Effective Working Image” for being on the spot to capture all the action and prize winners.

We again would like to say a huge thanks to Geoff Searle, who has been one of our Sail Peninsula Jury and Protest Committee Officials now for at least five or six years and is soon to be retiring. We are extremely grateful for all your time, efforts and expertise down through the years. We will miss yourself and Wendy, but hope you will pop in and see us every now and then. We wish you all the best for your retirement together.

It takes a mighty team of people behind the scenes to plan, organise and execute Sail Peninsula and we wish to thank all our awesome members who volunteered their time to the cause. AMS Challenge Trophy

Congratulations to Mornington Yacht Club for winning this year's AMS Challenge Trophy. The winning club is calculated from the top three Division 1 yachts from each yacht club in the Margaret Crittenden Race held on the Sunday of the regatta.

The winning team from MYC was Ginan, Rush and Javelin with a winning score of 10 points.

This was the first time that Mornington YC has won the Sunday Challenge Race since it was first introduced in 2015. We look forward to seeing them to defend the trophy in 2024.

Goodbye Girls

Today Grainne and Rhylee began their adventure of a lifetime by getting on a plane with a one way ticket to Europe. After many months planning an adventure, getting advice from our community of members, friends and relatives, the girls gave their parents one last hug and walked off into the departure lounge. Many members have watched these two grow up to become the wonderful confident women that they are today. As a special little goodbye, some of these members joined an impromptu celebration with Snooks Catering staff and the girls on Sunday afternoon once the Sail Pen regatta come to a close. Lets just say, I think we gave them a few extra smiles to carry with them on their journey. Thanks to David and Deirdre for putting on a couple of drinks for the celebrations, and a special thanks to Holly, who served us drinks like a boss.

Off The Beach News

Hi everyone, it is Abbey and I because we didn't have any OTB last weekend, I wanted to say how amazing our junior girls did in Girl Sail!!

Girl Sail was held on the 24^th at Davey’s Bay, and it consisted of great wind throughout the day. Overall, Girl Sail consisted of 24 races and 5 solid hours out on the water.

In Div 1 we had Aurelia and Kristen sailing together and who WON THE FIRST RACE of the ENTIRE day, which was a PHENOMENAL achievement. Everyone was utterly jealous of their speaker whilst out on the water, with them screaming the lyrics of Riptide at the top of their lungs. Their roll tacks were superior. Silvia also sailed in this division and she was FLYING around the course!! I feel like I haven’t seen her sail in AGES and I was literally blown away (haha get it? I was blown away because I could not keep up with her) by how good she is! I also competed in Div 1 and did a well-deserved 720 penalty when I somehow ended up with my stern crashing on top of someone’s bow going downwind (stupid waves). It was overall a great day considering I successfully sailed to the wrong mark and had to be recalled by the start boat because I was over the line… yay.

In Div 2, we had Mika who executed an amazing capsize!! She and her skipper survived the rough conditions with a beaming smile on their faces. Congratulations on her first Girl Sail! We also had Imogen; SHE ALSO PLACED FIRST IN ONE OF THE RACES WHICH IS OUTSTANDING! Also, the highlight of her school’s team was the pink zinc supplied by her… a very fashionable look. In the end, St Leonards (the school of Imogen, Kristen and Aurelia) came second on count back (technically joint first)! Extremely well sailing from all our girls to get a great achievement for their school!

We all look forward to Girl Sail next year, and it will be the year that Safety Beach wins (because it is definitely a competition of clubs)!

Cruising Weekend to Geelong March 11th -13th

A great weekend is planned and weather predictions so far looking good. Come and enjoy a cruise with other club members.

RGYC have organised a berth for us all on the new wave wall adjacent to the yacht club and in front of the beautiful foreshore. Cost of berth $45 per night. Pay on arrival.

Lots to do in Geelong:

Great restaurants
Parks and walks
Shops close to the foreshore
Museums – eg the National Wool museum
Saturday night dinner planned at the Centra Hotel (walking distance from the club)

Start Time to leave from front of SBSC – 10.30 Saturday March 11^th

Course – Directly to Geelong but being conscious of depths. Leave Prince George Pole (beacon) to Port.

Keelboat Brass Monkey Winter Series

We are looking for some assistants to help out in the tower this winter for the Keelboat Brass Monkey Winter Series.

Some sailing / race administration experience is handy but not essential.

The races are held every second Sunday morning from the 21st May through to the 17th September.

So if you are:

Not planning on sailing this winter series and have a Sunday or two available
Are keen to get more involved in club activities even if you are not a sailor
Want to learn more about Race administration and management
Always wanted to see what the racing looks like from the other side of the glass

ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads – New Date: Sunday 2 April

Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.

Port Fairy Race – Good Friday, 7 April starting 3.30pm

New Members Meet & Greet

Commodore Tony Christmas and Executive Committee member John Matheson, along with Secretary Mem Mackie and Social Committee Chair Ann Matheson, warmly welcomed 8 new members to the club on Sunday afternoon with drinks and nibbles. It was great to see that two of the members were previous members that wished to renew their connection the club and its activities. Several of the new members then stayed on to listen to Mietta playing the guitar as part of our regular Sunday Sounds, and enjoy the fabulous view from the deck. Thanks to the members present that made everyone feel welcome.

It was great to see the juniors back at the club early on Sunday morning. It was a hive of activity with boats being rigged, our junior instructors (Jess, Nick & Abbey) attending a planning meeting for future training, and several younger kids hit the water in the club Quest for “Greg’s Green Fleet”. New junior Zaya joined Artie and Mika to enjoy a very pleasant 10 knot breeze and it was smiles all round. Also, on a side note you may have noticed Zac Lowe and Finn Meijer made the front page of the Mornington News Paper for their efforts at Snapper Point Regatta – well done boys.

Captains Report

Hi Gang,

I hope you've all had a good week so far. It started off pretty well on Sunday with some reasonable breeze in the morning, as reported by the Young'uns and the Keelboat bunch who all had a really nice sail in 10 to 12 knots with flat water, sunshine and narry a jetski to be seen. Ahh, if only it could have lasted into the afternoon. Unfortunately, just like last week, the weather Bureau got it spot on again, only as Fiona Lowe pointed out in her report in last weeks enews - "The wind was strong enough to turn your ears inside out", this week it faded away to the merest zephyr.

RO Geoff called for an early start to try and get a third race in for the Club Championship series and it was great to see the yard full of boats rigging up. From the moment we left the beach though it was clear, this was not going to be a bum clenching ride. Luckily for me and quite a few others who left the beach far to late, the 12.57 first warning was delayed and we finally got away at around 13.40 in about 4 knots. The wind held in for most of the race with plenty of shifts but it was mostly a game of follow the leader. There definatly wasn't enough to get the A class guys up foiling let alone the rest of us to a reasonable pace.
With one race under the belt, the course was changed in quick time by the rhib crews, and with fading wind we got away for race two. Unfortunately the writing was on the wall and with most of the fleet only half way around, the decision was made to abandon the race and head for home. Of course half way back the wind stopped and some of us suffered the ultimate shame of a tow home ( I was quite happy to suffer that shame!).

We had 23 starters this week, including a new Sabre sailor, Keith Bailis who has been crewing on the keelboats and has decided to give OTB a go. For his first time in a dingy, he did very well and will be a good addition to the group. Also out for his first race was young Jamieson Ferguson in his Tera. You will remember that Jamieson sailed all the way to Mount Martha the other week in only his third time in a yacht. This week he stayed out from start to finish, joined in both starts, ended up first overall in Div 1 and enjoyed a tow home with no mishaps; look out for this guy because he'll be on your tail very soon.

The one casualty for the day was Xavier Graham who was heading out in a quest with Sylvie Mackie and before they left the beach, he found out why the boom is called the BOOM! A trip to ER and no permanent damage will leave Xav wondering why he didn't wear his helmet for the first time ever!

Thanks to everyone that turned up to sail and a special thanks to the race team of Geoff E, Deirdre S and friend in Start, Rob C and Leanne Brady in Sutherland and Tim B with Kieran Snooks in Woodsy. A great job on a trying day.

This week there is no OTB sailing due to Sail Peninsula being on, but if you really need a sailing fix I have heard that there are a few keelboats still looking for crew so give Di Jackson or Mark Lawrence a call to hopefully get you a ride but don't leave it too late! The following week is back to our normal 2.00 pm start and the weather is going to be PERFECT.

But before I go, I must mention Bill Manning for his creditable 27th place in a fleet of 77 at the Sabre state titles last weekend. His placing was boosted by an outstanding 4th place in the last race. Well done Bill!

Farewell ‘Friday Harbour’

Skipper Kon Cili has informed us that Friday Harbour has now been sold and its new home will be Queenscliff. Kon remains a senior member at SBSC and has expressed an interest in crewing for others, so please reach out to get him onboard. His loyal crew provided the following recap of their time on Friday Harbour, and we wish Kon all the best with what comes next…

“Kon, is like a walrus. Loud, overbearing at times, but wonderfully generous, caring, and good fun to be around. He's been a true gladiator of the sailing fraternity. A unique identity we have had so much fun sailing with. Through Kon we have met so many people, participated in many events, and had great adventures. He has been a real giver!

Life is going to be different without Kon, his gang of followers, his loud booming voice and outrageous statements, not to mention his terrible singing!! Kon and Friday Harbour will be missed by his merry crew members and the sailing clubs with which he's been affiliated (SBSC, MYC, MCYS and Newhaven).”

Cruising Weekend to Geelong

March 11-13, 2023 (Long Weekend)

Come for a great weekend cruise to Geelong. It’s a great location with lots to do - great foreshore, walks, restaurants etc.

We’ll sail over on Saturday March 11, spend the Saturday and Sunday night at Royal Geelong Yacht Club with the return sail on Monday March 13.
