Off The Beach News
Hi there Gang, not a lot to report on this week I'm afraid.
Sunday started out nice and sunny with very little wind in the morning, but the breeze picked up a bit in the afternoon. Not a howling gale that's for sure, but enough to get a couple of races in. With Geoff E away officiating at another regatta, Ross M, AKA 'The Cisco Kid', stepped in as RO for the day. Now Ross runs a pretty tight ship so it was not a good idea to leave the beach too late as the first race started bang on time.
We started the day with good old course 5 and it was nice to have a triangle or two again to get those screaming reaches going ( a little bit of wishful thinking there ). A fairly steady breeze kept the fleet of 20 boats bunched up in there respective divisions for most of the race and in Div 2, a trio of young guys from Greg's Green Fleet in one of the Quests even managed to keep on the same leg as Bill M,the Gingerbread Man. These guys have only sailed a couple of times, but even managed to get the kite up and down without any major problems. I'm putting that down to the excellent coaching they are getting in the morning.
With the course length set nicely for a 30 minute race, the last boat had barely crossed the finish line when the flags went up for race two, and it started off much the same as race one- until. Yep, there's always an 'until', and this one came in the form of a bunch of holes all over the course just waiting to swallow up the unwary sailor. It was nothing to be zipping happily along only to come to a dead stop while you watched your compadres, not 50 metres away, sail along oblivious to your plight. The crowning glory of these holes came in the second half of the race with a bunch of Div two boats all coming around the bottom mark all falling in a really big flat spot then watching Gingerbread Bill half way up the course hiking out on a 30 degree lift! The breeze finally caught up to them only to leave them motionless right next to the top mark. The next batch hauled them in only to have another 30 degree shift bugger up their passing manoeuvre big time.
On finally making around the mark, Mark Lawrence, sitting comfortably on station in Woodsy, was heard to offer up some encouragement with, "Tough day at the office boys!" Always the master of the understatement is Mark. With two races under the belt and the breeze fading a bit, Ross pointed us to the shore for an early day to let those heading up to Lake Boga plenty of time to pack their bags.
Other things of note was the return of Campbell and Emma M after Campbell's fall and six broken ribs edging out Greg and James in the Tasars and Taipan Tony borrowing an A class cat to try a different method of not going around the buoys. Hmm, A class Tony just doesn't have the same ring to it though.
Many thanks to this weeks race team of Ross and Deirdre on Start, Mark L and Nick M in Woodsy and Rob F with Jess L in Sutherland. With Nick and Jess on duty and most of the other 420s away at the Schools Racing at Mornington, Zac and Finn got some pretty good one on one coaching from Matilda in the white rhib coach boat. She was also helping out the other 'Greenies' where ever she saw the need. I'm hoping to get a Bio up on Matilda to introduce her to the rest of the members who may not have had the pleasure of meeting her yet.

School Sailing States
Hi Everyone, it is Abbey.
Last weekend was the School Sailing States! This 3 day regatta was held at Mornington Yacht Club and consisted of around 20 teams and over 150 races. Thank you so much to our one and only Geoff for being Race Officer and making this event run smoothly. Thanks to Deirdre who was also on the start boat and any other SBSC volunteer for their efforts.
Aurelia and Kristen both competed for St Leonard’s College, with their team ending up in the top 8 of Div 2. They competed EXTREMELY well! Aurelia’s favourite word in the dictionary is definitely ‘PROTEST’. I sailed for the Peninsula seconds, and I finely had the thrill of coming first in races – as Nick was not there to beat me!! Overall, it was an amazingly fun weekend with lots of lollies and uno games played on the pier. I personally think that Geoff should have SABOTAGED the other teams by recalling them at the start and letting Aurelia, Kristen and I win; that sounds fair to me!

The youth t-shirts (with names on them) will have another order put in soon, so if you missed out on first round orders, please contact Marg to make sure you get one in the next batch, which will be processed by end of March. These t-shirts have been a hit with the juniors and will be great to wear to regatta's etc.
Beach Cleanup
Our APRIL beach clean is on Sunday 16th April 9.00am at the beachside carpark opposite BP.
Please come down and help out for an hour and maybe join us for a coffee afterwards.
