Off The Beach News

Howdy gang.
Funny old day on the water Sunday wasn't it? First up, a huge thank you to the great effort from the race team of RO Drew M, Asst RO Deirdre S (as always), rhib drivers and crews Rob Campbell, Simon Haslett, Steve Daniels and Ciaran Snooks. Also on board Start this week was new member, Bruce Mansfield (no, not that one!). Bruce came to us after 30 or so years of sailing and race management at Williamstown Yacht Club, where he is a Life Member and has many years of experience in course laying. He has expressed an interest in becoming a permanent member of the race crew, so please introduce yourselves to him and give him the ol' Safety Beach welcome.

Back to the day's racing. It was great to see a goodly number of boats on the water (23). Everyone had come out to enjoy the first decent bit of hot weather and say hello to our jet skiing friends, bless their noisy little hearts! After an early start to try and get an extra race in after missing out on the first day of the Club Championship, Drew needed to set the course a looong way out to accommodate an on water start for the Keelboats (it's not all about us ya know). As the club house disappeared over the horizon, I thought, "I'm not going to make the start here", but as usually happens when I don't have time to think and therefor bugger it up, I had my best start of the season! Pity I couldn't follow it up for the rest of the race.
 
Others fared much better, there was enough breeze to get the A class guys foiling and the bods in the 420s showed their speed to the Sabre team. Speaking of teams,Team Pink, in our VERY bright new rash vests compliments of Glenn L and his association with the Hawaiian World Championships, meant there was no chance of getting lost at sea. I think even Bruce's friends at Williamstown could see us!
 
After a very long first race, due to the long upwind leg for the keelboats, race two was shortened considerably and we all got around in enough time to line up for race three. The wind had held steady at 315 degrees with 5 to 8 knots all day and there was no need to alter the course so off we went again, except for those few ( smart ?) ones who had had enough fun for the day. Well, you can guess the outcome of course. As we all got as far out to sea as we possibly could, the breeze dropped to absolute zero as often happens on a hot day. And although the various Apps showed 17 knots at South Channel and Frankston, it simply refused to give us even the slightest puff in our corner. In the end we had to suffer the ultimate humiliation of a very long tow home. A couple of Tasars and 420s even had to endure the final shame of accepting a tow from some passing Life guards- on jet skis of all things!
 
All in all, two races is better than one and one race is better than none and a day on the water is better than one off the water, so we'll all be back next week. It was great to see Natasha Martin back on the water after the birth of her and Mike's daughter and I'm sure Ross will find a way to fit a baby seat in the back of their Tasar!

Try Sailing

Another great turnout for Safety Beach Try Sailing, we had around 10 kids and 1 adult. Great weather allowed some of our sailors to have a bit of fun capsizing and all smiles indicated that they enjoyed their time. Once again we had an amazing time with the kids in a Quest, Tera's and the RHIB all going at insanely fast speeds. Can’t wait to see you all next week!
This Sunday's session will be the last one for a while as we take some time for Christmas events. Thanks to everyone who helped out over the weekend – Sunday: the start boat crew, Amanda Malin and Graeme Ainslie in tower.  Friday night: we had our stalwarts in the tower (Amanda, Judy and Elaine) who are always there to set up, be race officer, process results – or all three!  And thanks to duty boat Amazing Grace and a new member to the club, Bruce Mansfield who also assisted in a busy tower that night.

  • When signing on for the race with the tower on VHF 69, please advise that the yacht will be entering the Female Helm Series, and provide the name of the nominated female helm.
  • Helming is not restricted to one female during the race.
  • If not a member of SBSC, we ask that they register for a Sail Pass at no charge. Sail Passes are available HERE

ORCV News 

Ocean Sailing Events 

This year the Cock of the Bay race will run from Port Melbourne and will finish at Mornington. With already 70 entries into the race, we do expect this year to be a big fleet with interstate crews joining the race before they head off on the 50th Melbourne to Hobart the next day.  Please note, entries close on December 16th. The shorter distance will allow those not entered in the Hobart race or joining the Petersville regatta to enjoy a great day out on the water to work off those excesses of Christmas and allow time to sail home or to another location (other than BYS) in time for sunset drinks.

ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads 

“The Rip” is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6nm and provides a restricted tidal flow between the ocean and Port Phillip, where over 4,000 commercial vessels transit annually.  
Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.
The tour runs inside the bay but travels around the head's region, and offers not only an educational experience but a great day on the water.  A great Christmas gift, learn more and book here Book your Rip Tour here.

Last weekend's race and qualifier for the Melbourne to Hobart 6th December 2022
Ginan’s perfect start to a Summer of Offshore Racing. 
It was a clean sweep for co-skippers Nigel Jones and Cam McKenzie on their J111 yacht ‘Ginan’ in the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s (ORCV) West Offshore Products Coastal Sprint 2, where thirty yachts enjoyed what could only be described as a perfect summer’s day of sailing in Bass Strait. 
“The race was good preparation for us all in the lead up to Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster” said McKenzie “allowing us to get into the swing of things, hunting down the bigger leading boats, as we worked hard on sail trim and sailing tactically to the boat polars.”   
“We’d noticed pre-race, that the pin end showed effects of an adverse current, with the tide through the heads still running strongly,” said McKenzie. “Our decision to start closer to the shore and shallows and out of the current gave us a lead over the fleet who stuck to the middle of the channel, as we edged ahead of Walton’s, Reichel Pugh 46 ‘Hartbreaker’ to clear Port Phillip Heads first.” 
“The conditions were ideal for the J111, for its ratio of sail to wetted surface area.” McKenzie went on “Soon as we were clear of the heads, we moved to the A1.5 which is great for sub 10 knots and hardened up to the turning mark swapping only to the code zero when the breeze started to move just prior to the mark.” 
“We’ve got some great experience onboard Ginan today” said McKenzie “with five of the seven crew sailing together in the 1999 Westcoaster race on Cadibarra 7. A great race and tactics and introduction for my nineteen-year-old son Will to see, for his first offshore race.” 
“A little surprised to claim third on AMS and 2nd on ORC” explained Mark Welsh skipper of the Beneteau First 40, ‘Wicked’.  “Wicked is quite heavy and normally isn’t suited for light wind, reaching conditions.”   “The winds were as predicted, moving from N to NE and finally SE as we changed between spinnaker, code zero and finally to the jib.  We were lucky to reach the turning mark just prior to the winds changing to the SE and building to 15 knots, with our symmetrical spinnaker it was then one gybe as we pushed the angle right to the finishing gate.” 
“The well-behaved Bass Strait, gave us that run to ensure everything worked,” said Mark, “as we prepare for the upcoming Westcoaster”. 
The results are just “icing on the cake” commented Alex Toomey, skipper of the Sayers 12 ‘Ryujin’ still buzzing after a great race where they pushed hard all day soaking up the joy of just being back on the ocean again and claiming 2nd on AMS.   
Most of the fleet using this last race to fine-tune or complete their qualifying passage.  They now set their sights on the 50th Melbourne to Hobart ‘Westcoaster’ which starts midday on December 27th.

Seasons Greetings members!

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is nearly upon us. It’s been great to see the Keel Boat fleet increase in numbers despite the weather with those whom headed North returning to our fair state. Great also, to see a number of new boats hitting the water for the first time. A quick shout out to Tim Bardon SB20 and our club RO Geoff Eldridge who were both desperately in kneed of new knees. We wish you both a speedy recovery and we look forward to having you both out on the water soon.
 
Please remember that there is a change to sailing instructions posted on the website for this weekends racing times. Keel Boat first warning signal will be 12.25pm. The change to SI’s is attached. OTB’s warning signal will now be 12.57pm. This change was made so that we could accommodate 3 OTB races in the Club Championship Series due to the previous session of races being abandoned.
 
I am seeking expressions of interest from members willing to help on a sail training committee. The role of this committee will not be to facilitate training but rather guide the club on a structure moving forward. The Club Executive Committee is willing to release funds to ensure we can attract the right coaching talent to the club to help the club deliver Tackers Courses, OTB and Keel Boat Training, youth pathway programs and Adult pathway to participation programs. Members who store their yachts and kayaks in the yard need to be aware that the keys to locks on all gates, spar locker roller doors and change rooms are changing. It’s been a number of years since the last change of keys. These keys will be registered and a bond of $50.00 will be required to get a key, refundable when the key is returned to the secretary, should you resign from the club. This change is likely to occur early in the New Year or earlier.
 
There is a Tasar training day being hosted by SBSC this Saturday, run by Tasar Victoria with head coaches and former World Tasar Champions Chris Dance and Pete Hackett. A few SBSC Tasar sailors have registered for this event, aimed at improving our tactics and boat speed. Fingers crossed the wind and weather play their part.

Off The Beach News

Hey there troops.
 
What a ride, eh? Sunday certainly was a crazy day that's for sure. When they say "It was a game of two halves", they could have been referring to the half that got off the beach and the other half that couldn't. In a bizarre twist, first we were held on the beach because of a squall that blew through that was way over the comfort zone. Then things calmed down nicely and we were called out by the race team (who had been out there the whole time mind you). The first six or so boats out got a reasonable breeze and made good time, while the rest got stuck on the shore as the wind died out to nothing. It took nearly half an hour to get to the start line, which mercifully was brought in much closer to shore to meet the fleet, otherwise it probably would have led to an abandonment.
 
Once there, enough breeze came through to get a start, albeit a slow one. The Cats and Tasars made the most of it with Ross and Amy picking a great line, even beating the A class guys to the first mark. The Div Two boats didn't fare so well as the wind died to almost nothing and at 30 minutes in and we hadn't reached the top mark. Things didn't look good for our one hour cutoff limit. Then out of the blue (or grey in this case) another front came through and wow, what buzz! From two to fifteen knots in a matter of seconds really makes you pay attention. And with that also came a massive swing to the left, so if you happened to be on the good side the beat was suddenly pointing straight at the mark. Conversely if you were on the bad side, tough luck Chuck. A game of two halves again! Sorry Doc, some times ya pick 'em and sometimes ya don't. The wind held and while the first leg took 30 minutes, the next four only took 15.
 
The big shift stayed in, so a bit of mark shifting was needed and in an inspired move by first time RO, James Everett, ably advised by VERY able advisor, Rick Potter, turned the wing mark into the new top mark, dropped the top mark back a bit to be the wing mark, a minor shift of the start pin and then throw up the old green, starboard course flag and bingo, off you go people! All this course changing was carried out in near record time (considering the waves) by old timers Rob C and Drew M in Sutherland, as well as first timers Steph K and Abbey E with Greg L as mentor in Woody. Yes, we finally got there with the juniors, and they did a great job too, having to set the course three times before the first race!
 
The second race was an absolute flier with the first Div two 420 getting around in 11 minutes and the first Tasar in 17 minutes and I know I wasn't the only one to pull a granny tack at the wing mark rather than try a right hand gybe while barely in control! The Taipans and A class guy wisely pulled out before the second race( except Ewan, respect. ) although he didn't last long before it got a bit too hairy even for him. Rob Fleming did manage both races on the mighty Windrush, but then he did have his granddaughter Grace on board to keep him calm and in control. Very good effort guys.
 
All in all, Sunday was a great day's sailing. Lots of excitement, like in the good old days. Thanks again to the race team, Deirdre, James and Rick on start. Rob, Drew, Abbey, Steph and Greg in the rhibs. A great job in tough conditions, both heavy and light.
 
That's about all for now. Don't forget, next week is a Club Championship race and we are starting ONE HOUR EARLIER to try and get three races in. So that's a 12.57 first warning. Oh, and by the way, all that sludge is gone from the beach, so get yer bum in a boat and have some fun!

Big shout out to Abbie and Steph for their help on the patrol boats last week I hear they did well, and from what I observed both enjoyed the experience and got to see some of the changing conditions the Bay can present.
Thanks also Greg Lowe for your help and guidance to these two also, and for putting them both through their paces on the varying winds. Good practice!! Also, shoutout for James as RO and Mr Potter for his wisdom behind the wheel of start helping James out also, ably assisted (as always) by Ms Snooks!

Beach Seaweed Cleanup

Many of you are aware of the large and deep amount of seaweed on the shoreline out the front of the club. Commodore Tony Christmas has spoken with Council last week, and the clean-up of beach seaweed is on their maintenance works list but they can’t advise when this will be because of the high workload from the recent storms.

Last night, Australian Sailing’s Lou Hutton gave an excellent seminar on the tasks and responsibilities involved in being a Race Officer.  Lou is our Principal RO for Sail Peninsula and she serves the same role at many regattas.
 
The presentation is on Australian Sailing’s website click here to access it. - Club Race Officer Seminar Presentation. It is part of a pathway to become an AS qualified Club Race Officer and of the 17 members who attended, several are interested in exploring this qualification further.

Smooth Operator Update 29th November

We are now just half way on our trip across the Atlantic and if the favorable winds hold hope that we should be in sometime on Wednesday 7th December * fingers crossed*.
Been having a great time and like our latest sail configuration which is two reefs in the main and the poled out big Yankee headsail which we furl in or let out depending on the wind strength.  Bobbling along at a good rate of knots.  Sea state is a bit awkward today so a bit rolly but all things considered very comfy.
We had a fish find its ways downstairs the other night which was pretty funny - must have come in through the hatch which was a bit open.  Every morning we have to clear the decks of flying fish as usually get a couple on deck overnight.
Looking forward to a few Rum Punches when we get in or a beer or two mind you very much enjoying our time at sea.

Changes to Sailing Instructions

Please note that changes to both the Keelboat and OTB Sailing Instructions have been posted on the noticeboard and club website as of 17 November 2022.  These changes alter the time of the first Warning signal for the Club Championship races on the 4th December 2022 and the 15th January 2023.  The first Warning signals on both days have been brought forward by 1 hour to give the OTB Race Officer a chance to run 3 races on each of the days to catch up the races missed on 6th November and still give the keelboat fleet an on-water start.  The links to the change documents are below or can be accessed from the Keelboat or OTB home pages on the website as applicable.
 

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.
Not a great deal to report this week I'm afraid. The weather Gods were  definatly against us for sure. A lot of consultation was carried out between the race officers and managers, both OTB and Keelboat, before the decision was made to pull the pin on the days sailing. In the end it was the only safe thing to do as things got kinda wild out there and trying to launch and retrieve in that mess would not be pretty. Also taken into account was the safety of the race team in the rhibs and start boat.
 
All that aside, it was another letdown for the juniors as this week Zac and Finn were going to be manning one of the rhibs with Erik on board as mentor. We'll get those young'uns out there one day, I guarantee it. This week we are giving it another try with Abbey and Steph having a crack with Greg onboard as instructor . Also having a first time go as RO will be the incomparable James Everett Esq. I'm sure James will do a stirling job, I'm given him a wealth of advice - what could possibly go wrong ???
 
Anyway, that's enough drivel for now,we'll see each other this Sunday and the weather will be perfect.

Try Sailing

Try Sailing began on Sunday in less than ideal conditions. With some clever improvising, we moved the training program indoors. Junior members Harrison, Grace and Jameson got to try out carpet sailing in an Opti and had a great time.
We are all hoping for better conditions this weekend and look forward to moving the training outdoors, so keep an eye on the forecast and see you Sunday.

ARC 2022 - Team Smooth Operator

Following update was received by Di on 19th November. As we all know, the race has begun, and from all accounts, they are going well. Follow the link below, to see their progression.

Only one sleep to go until the start of ARC 2022. Boat and crew are as prepared as we can be.
Cpt Russ and Mark are at the Skippers briefing and will get the latest weather update but according to the various forecasts and models it is looking like a brisk start with solid trades forecast for the first day then slowly backing off to what we hope will be a lovely downwind trip across the Atlantic.
To get some inspiration we went and checked out to home and museum of Christopher Columbus as we will be roughly following in his footsteps!.
The Smooth Operator crew have lodged their times for how long the trip will take. Mark has put in a very optimistic time of 14.5 days & and the slowest guesstimate is 17.5 days so based on that we should arrive at St Lucia around the 5th to 7th December. We have been told that we will be greeted with fresh fruit and rum punches on arrival .

Drama on Empara! 

Poor Empara suffered the embarrassment of throwing one of her two propeller blades at an inconvenient moment. (Is there ever a right time?) Fortunately for us the blade went down and not up otherwise it would have been a salvage operation.
We are very grateful to our Keel boat captain John Wemyss, and his crew Jann Wilson and Peter Hollins, for giving us a tow around to the boat yard despite the terrible weather that was before us. The Photo taken may look like it was another day in paradise but 10 minutes earlier it was squall at 38 knots and bucketing down. It is no fun when you have no propulsion and only one blade which vibrates the rig and just about shakes the keel loose. 
We often wondered why we went better to starboard. What happened is that when the 20 year old 2 bladed folding propeller lost one of the blades - the casting broke but the pin is still in situ as far as we could tell using a GoPro 10. 
At any rate, Empara is getting cleaned down, antifouled, new prop and a few other mechanical issues attended to this week. We are also repainting the waterline red stripe to try and get an extra knot out of the boat.

What's On In November november happenings 2022

Shopping Tour

On Saturday 19th November  some enthusiastic shoppers set out from the club for a Local Shopping Experience in Dromana. Fortified by coffees and pastries from Millers Bread Kitchen the group started off at Verdant Dwellings where Jeff Nielsen talked about his amazing display of indoor plants and how to care for them. A short drive to Boundary Rd to the Peninsula Gourmet Products and Wombat Vegan Cafe enabled some locally made Christmas goodies for the foodies to be purchased.
 
A tour of the award winning Red Hill Candle Co with Ebony Flett followed. What a welcoming place that was, with opportunities to make your own candle or develop your favourite perfumes in the scent lab. Calmbuddhi was the next stop where Angela described the block printing process of her fabrics made in India and explained the purpose of singing bowls and other items such as yoga mats and bolsters to help in meditation or yoga.
 
A tasty lunch was had at Jimmy Rums where we also learnt all about the rum making process and then off to the Dromana Indoor Market. Lots of bargains to be had amongst the vintage and retro clothes and christmas items. A few intrepid members finished the day with a quick tour of the retail shops in Dromana.
 
The Social Committee provides a variety of events at different times of the year and we are presently planning a karaoke afternoon, trips to local historical houses and other fun activities. The next event is the Club Christmas Party on Sunday 18th December. Details will be provided shortly in the enews.

A local Safety Beach resident has contacted the club to offer his boat building collection to someone that loves model boats. Free to a good home – bits and pieces especially strips for planking plus hardware such as guns, ships wheels and the like. Perfect for a hobbyist! .

Hey gang,
Not much to report this week unfortunately. T'was a beautiful day but alas, not a puff of breeze to be found. Geoff and the team were out early to start the keelboats off but they had a worse time of it than us, at least the 420's that ventured out were moving-just. The only movement the keelboats had was at the turn of a key.
 
One advantage they did have over us though was that they didn't have to wade through all the foul sludge on the waters edge. I've never seen anything like it. It was like a brownie/white sticky sludge, not nice at all. Surprisingly though, upon their return from kayaking, Judy C and Linda S dragged their boats through the muck up to the yard, whereupon Linda remarked that it would be great for wrestling in!!! I'm not sure what passes as fun at your house Andrew, but I'm not sure I want to play!
 
It was a shame we didn't get a sail in as we had two of the juniors, Jess Lowe and Nick Meijer out in one of the rhibs for their first stint on race duty. They were partnered with all round nice guy Rick Potter. With his bung shoulder, Rick is out of action sailing wise for a bit, but was more than happy to go out and let Nick and Jess do all the driving, mark laying and anchor pulling. While waiting for the racing to start/ not start, Rick took the time to let them do some high speed driving and set some practice courses to get the gist of the angles of the dangle. Also in the other rhib we had Rob C and Simon, who also took the opportunity to practice getting that upwind mark in the right spot.
 
Meantime, while all this merriment was going on, Deirdre was sitting calmly on the start boat pondering what it was like being another year older as it was her Birthday the day before! That's dedication for you. That's probably enough for this week, I've given out everyone's secrets, so we better hope we get a sail in this week or I might get lynched!

Hey guys,
Magic weather on Sunday and a great day on the water: Sadly, no wind to sail , but as we all know that sometimes how it goes.
Big shout out to a few from last week, in no particular order:
 
Jess & Nick for really grabbing the time on water to get the feel for course types and how to lay them, well done. We need you guys up and running and there’s no reason why you can’t be a fair dinkum (aka solo / duo) rescue boat crew in the very near future!
Rick Potter for spending his time to teach the guys, I know they would have valued that immensely.
Fiona Lowe for the idea to bring the small RHIB back to life, great idea! We’ll get the trailer registered and grab a new fire extinguisher so you’re 100% right.
Xavier for bringing his customary smile to the water and for driving the small RHIB diligently I heard!
And lastly Chippa for having the thought (assuming it was yours 😊) to get Nick & Jess on a boat for some learning, can’t wait to see more involved.

Junior and Come Try Sailing Is Back

Jess, Nick & Abbey are now fully accredited sailing instructors and they all set to start teaching our junior members the basics of sailing. They will be running Sunday morning training sessions for any junior members that are new to sailing. The training will begin in small groups in the club Quests, and as they advance, the juniors can move into one of the many club boats available from Minnows, Open Skiff’s & RS Tera’s.
