Off The Beach News

The sailing program has been posted on our website, here is the link for you, OTB Program 2025-26

Best of luck to Nick & Finn Meijer and Jessica Lowe, who are heading off to SA tomorrow to compete in the 2025 ZHIK Youth Sail SA Youth Championships and combined AUS Youth Team World Qualifying Event 27th and 28th September. All three competitors are teaming up with members from Metung YC and Gippsland Lakes YC to compete, which is fantastic. We look forward to some great photos and results.

Keelboats

Dear Keelboat Chums
As most will be aware, we have our Skippers and Crew Meeting this Sunday 28th September at the clubhouse. The Sailing Instructions are now on-line and Till has kindly loaded all the series on SailSys. So get your entries in.
The Agenda for the Skippers and Crew meeting so far includes:
  • One excitement will be the anticipation we’ll feel for our Navigational Challenge. Massive fun. I did it on Rogue in the good old days before COVID. The inspiration for this was Mornington Yacht Club’s race of the same name. Ours will also have the option of a clockwise or anti-clockwise course. It will be scheduled for later in the season (provisionally the end of March). See Course 32 in the sailing Instructions.
  • The Margaret Hollamby Series will now be sailed as a 3-race dedicated series. It will no longer be an option in the Friday Twilight Pursuit Series.
  • The Sailing Instructions will feature, with emphasis on Para 17.2 of the Safety Regulations concerning SailSys Sign-on and Crew Declaration requirements
  • SailSys – A real-time demonstration on the big screen of what the Tower sees and how they manage it, as well as adding people to your crew register, adding crew to a race, the simple copying across the crew from the previous race in the series, and using one’s phone to manage on the day
  • Series entry to include statements on Man Overboard, Insurance and the minimum Cat 5 Safety declaration. See NOR Rule 4.2. Each yacht has a directory on SailSys for the easy upload of documents and any other files you may wish to save on the system such as bread recipes
  • Note also that the NOR Rule 4.2 specifies when a yacht must complete her MOB practice. I recommend that yachts cruising but not racing also undertake the M(orW)OB drill
  • Another Till Brauckmann triumph is the set-up of a WhatsApp group for skippers looking for crew and potential crew looking for a yacht to sail on. Crew must of course have an Australian Sailing Number
  • I hope to get someone to talk about cruising.
  • In my humble opinion doing the occasional Friday twilight would be good practice for cruisers. So let’s get out huge numbers for the Twilights to keep the Tower Volunteers on their toes. The Racing Rules of Sailing and the Sis apply. https://www.sailingresources.org.au/rules-hub/rrs
  • And offshore and at night: COLREGS https://www.imo.org/en/ourwork/safety/pages/preventing-collisions.aspx
The highlight of the day will be a presentation by Matt Fahey, Rear Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, to publicise the Lipton Cup, to be held on14-16 November. Note that we have adjusted our program to remove a clash between the Lipton and our own Club Championship Race 2, moving that race to 23rd November. Matt sends the following text:

“The Lipton Cup Regatta honours the trophy presented to RYCV in 1907 by Sir Thomas Lipton for the purpose of promoting spirited competition and comradery amongst all yacht clubs on Port Phillip, and this year will be the 17th version of this prestigious regatta since its revival in 2006.
Matt will provide an overview of the multi-division format for keelboat and OTB competitors, and will be available to answer any questions you may have.
Make sure you join us on Sunday to learn more, and let's see if SBSC can be well represented at northern Port Phillip's premier regatta, in the spirit of fostering relationships and spreading goodwill to assist future entrants for our Sail Peninsula Regatta.”

So let’s head north that weekend.

Working Bee

The Annual Working Bee will be held on Sunday, 5th October. As always, there are plenty of jobs to get through, with teams of members needed both at the club and in the boat shed at the ramp.
A full list of tasks will be shared in the week leading up to the day, so everyone can come prepared with the right equipment.
It’s an all-hands-on-deck effort, and we’ll finish up with a BBQ in the yard to thank all members who lend a hand.
