Brass Monkey Winter Series 

Winter racing is finally here! Starting THIS Sunday 16th June, please make sure you are at the club early, as briefing is at 9.15am. Race Officer is Glenn Lazaar, with Zac Lowe and Finn Meijer doing duty on Sutherland. All local clubs welcome, so if you know anyone interested in taking part, let them know. The weather is looking great, with a moderate SW and 14 degree's forecasted, it's going to be lots of fun.

Yard Storage

Sadly the Summer Sailing Season of 23/24 season has ended. We have all had a great year. As You know Yard Storage also ends on the 31st May. During the winter we allow the grass to grow and do essential maintenance. Therefore we kindly request all craft to be removed from the yard by May 31st. The exception to this rule is people who will be using their craft during the winter - eg  Winter sailing series participants. Any craft left in the yard after the 31st of May will be required to pay Winter Storage fees, which is the same cost as Summer Storage fees.

Results

Flat water and offshore breezes made for a perfect winter Fun Friday race.  Eight boats participated with 29 crew.  Course 11 was selected as the wind was below the 10 knots forecast. We welcomed back Yknot and The Office to the Fun Friday fleet.

Start of the day went to Shimmer (10 seconds and full boat speed) followed by Yknot (11), 2Xtreme (18), Ghost (20), Marrakesh (21) Whiskers (35) and Scamp (40). The Office had problems with traffic as they lined up for the start (70).  All boats were able to make the Yellow pile in one leg. Whiskers showing particularly good speed as they started close to the club. Ghost with only 2 crew made a fast start and were well positioned on the line.

At the 2nd Mussel Farm mark 2Xtreme had overtaken Ghost and Shimmer was making gains on Scamp.  The breeze started to drop as the boats passed the Mussel Farm but increased again as they approached R1. This favoured the larger boats.

On the beat back to the Yellow pile, there were a variety of tactics from different boats.  Shimmer stayed out from the cliffs and made some significant gains.  Whiskers, who had been  the first boat to appear from behind Martha Point with a significant lead on the rest for the fleet, opted to go around the West of the Mussel Farm and Ghost followed.  Unfortunately this did work as the breeze was variable on the southern end of the farm and they were knocked as they came toward the Yellow pile.

The Office was disadvantaged in the variable winds approaching R1 and could not recover. Scamp and Marrakesh were disadvantaged by some lighter winds as they came out from Martha Point.

Yknot tacked into the club prior to the Mussel Farm and took advantage of the lift along the shore as they tacked to the Yellow pile. Shimmer followed and 2Xtreme took their usual course of tacking in as soon as they could clear Martha Point.

'Team Hanse' had a win and a second with Yknot and Shimmer, followed by 2Xtreme. Whiskers was only 12 seconds behind 2Xtreme.

ORCV DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series (Saturday 22 June) 
 
The ORCV Discount Yachting Winter Series program for racing and cruising is based on passage style racing within Port Phillip Bay. Weather for Sailors (Thursday 13 June) 
Revised for 2024 is the ORCV’s Weather for Sailors online course, with the first module starting on Thursday 13 June. The Weather for Sailors course is designed to inform all types and levels of sailors about how to observe weather conditions and how to find the right forecasting advice from the vast array of modern resources available.
