Commodores News

Last week, the Lions Club of Dromana donated $2500 to SBSC through their disbursement program. Two of our youth sailors, Matt Whitaker and Nick Meijer accepted the award on the Club's behalf and gave speeches to those in attendance at the Lions Disbursement Dinner. Graeme Wilson, secretary from Dromana Lions came up to me after the dinner and stated how impressed he was with Matt and Nick for their speeches.
As the keelboat sailors know we have been excluded using the aids to navigation marks as rounding marks in the Bay.  SBSC through the Keelboat Committee is working with Ports to set rounding marks near the existing marks to facilitate racing. We hope to have this concluded by the summer.
Recently, I attended the ORCV awards dinner at Sandringham Yacht Club. Boats that won awards were Shimmer from SBSC and Maverick and Patriot. Congratulations to all who participated in the ORCV events.
A few weeks ago I met with the Commodore and Vice Commodore of Royal Geelong. We discussed their formula for Festival of Sail and how we can apply some of that to Sail Peninsula. We also discussed closer ties between the two clubs for racing and cruising.
With the AGM almost upon us, we have secured a guest speaker to enthrall us on their exploits of sailing a long, iconic, ocean race in adverse weather and sea conditions and the exhilaration of overcoming major obstacles to finish the race. A lesson in determination.
Speaking of the AGM, SBSC is still a volunteer Club. We need members to step up and join committees and help share the load that is required to keep the Club and its events on track. If you would like to be involved in any capacity please let our secretary know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming end of season celebration on the 29th June.

VicPorts and Two New Buoys

Great news was received recently with SBSC securing in-principle approval from VicPorts (as opposed to ParksVic) to place two new fixed buoys out near the shipping channel and within VicPorts jurisdiction.  This means no more Virtual Marks.

A new sub-committee has been set up to review all our courses, and last week they selected lat/long's for these new buoys.  We now plan to submit this with buoy details to VicPorts for final approval.  The aim is to have the buoys installed before season opening.

Australian Sailing Annual Summit - 1 June 2024

This year’s summit was held at RBYC with very good attendance from all clubs around the bay and also regionally.  There were several excellent case studies from various clubs and insight into the many support services that AS offers.

Fiona Lowe, John Bacon and John Wemyss attended on behalf of SBSC.  Fiona Martin made a cameo appearance (with three others) with a presentation on the Sabrettes.  This group is focussed on helping women Sabre sailors within the Sabre Association.  Women comprise some 37% of all Vic Sabre Association members, by far outstripping other states, and this is largely due to these four Sabre sailors.

Hobsons Bay YC gave an insightful presentation on their new keelboat training and mentoring program, complete with the good, the bad and the ugly.  Certainly food for thought.

SBSC has gone solar!

Safety Beach Sailing Club has always been a great Member club with plenty of activity and support for those fortunate to be members. In fact, you could say there's a real 'energy' about the place.
This is particularly true since 60 solar panels and a 25 kW Inverter were installed in November last year by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.
The system is paid off by the club to the Council over 8 years. If the Council projections continue to be accurate, the club will benefit in reduced power bills by more than our biannual payment. When completely repaid, the system will continue to benefit the club for years to come, especially as power prices rise.
Over January, one of the better solar months, we used 64% of the solar power produced directly into the building which is a fantastic result. (January's data shown)
At peak times when the catering staff are in full flight, we often are completely powering all the fridges, ovens, and music that David can throw at us.
I always knew sailing was an environmentally friendly activity!

Cheers,
Rick Potter
