The schedules fun race on Friday 4th but the decision was made to reschedule to the afternoon of Sunday 6th. This was a great decision as there was over 35 Knots recorded when the race would have been held. Sunday was the opposite with very light South Westerly and a light Easterly close to shore. This led to light and variable conditions over the whole racecourse.
7 boats (Including JokerX2 as a visitor) started the race with 21 crew. Course 12 was selected with a total distance of 5.6 NM. One of the shortest courses, out to mark 21 and return. Cirrus, E’toile and Marrakesh started in a south westerly. Happy Days started just as the wind changed to easterly. Y Knot was quick to recognise the change in wind direction and with Shimmer and JokerX2 started close to the starting tower for a reach to yellow pile.
Happy Days, due to changing wind which seemed to head them whatever way they pointed, took a long time and many attempts to round the yellow pile. From the tower, we could see the wind was easterly on one side of the pile and south westerly 10 meters on the other side. A very frustrating situation. Happy Days was unable to recover from this and retired halfway up the first leg after an hour of sailing.
All the other boats carried on through the variable conditions. Cirrus was first round 21 followed by Marrakesh some distance behind. Then started a game of snakes and ladders as the wind became variable. Marrakesh went out to the left looking for some wind but found none. The other boats took the direct course. Halfway down the return leg a breeze came from the southwest and all boats were recording speeds of up to 5 Knots. Unfortunately, this was not to last. The boats had to cross a patch of very little wind coming into the yellow pile as the easterly tried to establish dominance. The boats were again caught between the two breezes.
JokerX2 showed that nothing beats a high sail area to weight ratio and reached the yellow pile and the finish first at an elapsed time of just under 2 hours showing an average speed of 2 Knots. Cirrus sailed a great race to score first place of the club boats only 3 minutes later. A great result in a small boat in difficult conditions. Marrakesh crossed the line 6 minutes after Cirrus, followed by Y knot.
Shimmer was only about 2 minutes behind these boats at the yellow pile, but the wind completely dropped out as they passed the Safety Beach Jetty. Shimmer went for the record of the slowest trip from the yellow pile to the finish. Shimmer took 25 minutes to complete this short distance. They finally finished in a very light easterly. They were 16 minutes inside the time limit.
E’toile, a boat with a small sail area to weight ratio, so unsuited to these variable conditions, had sailed to the right on the return leg, looking for wind, but found a large hole under Arthurs Seat. They retired when the water between them and the finish line went glassy.
It was pleasing to see crews adjust to the change in days. All boats should be congratulated on continuing to race under very trying conditions.
Dawn and Greg Clark assisted in the tower. They were excited after the birth of a grandson on Friday Night.
Next race is 18th August at 14.00H
