Tasar Worlds

The 2026 Tasar Worlds begin this week at Kunigama, Okinawa, Japan. From 117 entries, there are 40 Australian teams are competing in the championships. Andrew (Mono) Martin & Phil Potter are representing Sandringham Yacht Club and Ross Martin & Natasha Nugent are representing Safety Beach Sailing Club. Competition starts this Sunday 7th June. We wish all competitors safe sailing and a great regatta. Follow on their website and socials.

Those of us who are over seventy-five will remember Little Patti and the Sydney surf culture. Little Ninjo didn’t bring down the dance floor at the Maroubra Surf Club but remembers the Stomp and the way the chalk dust rose from the floor so thickly that you could hardly see your partner Stomping a mere ten feet away.

Sunday morning’s race was in a lively WNW. It’s hard to pick a course for that wind direction but who cares? Amanda chose Course 11 that has two sausages between Pier and SB1. Single tack to windward then back down to Pier – twice. The fleet was Happy Days, Ninjo, Shimmer, Echo Beach, Patriot, Summer Breeze and 11:11. Anthea was a last-minute withdrawal with a battery problem.

And Till forgot to read the course and went AWOL, so retired!!!

Alison was supposed to be sailing on Rawhide but for some reason they were unable to make it to the dock, so she sailed with us instead, joining Janine, Monty, Scotty and me. To quote our Scotty Chambers, ‘I always LOVE!!! surfing a boat. We stayed on numerous times and had her buzzing.’ Upwind we’d be doing 7 knots up a wave but only 5 after the slam. Unfair. I thought the lower reading was due to the amount of time the impeller was out of the water as we crested the wave.

Ninjo couldn’t catch Happy Days and Shimmer couldn’t catch Ninjo. As Happy Days was first home, figure the placings out.

A stompin’ good race!

Another Fun Friday this week for the unemployed and the unemployable. A pursuit with a 2:00 pm start time and Elaine as Race Officer.

Boatyard Works Over Winter

Removal of All Boats, SUPs & Kayaks Required

Due to scheduled maintenance works within the yard area, the Executive Committee requests that all craft be removed from the SBSC yard between 9:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday 25th July.

To allow the works to proceed safely and efficiently, the yard must be completely cleared during this period.

All current yard keys need to be audited. If you are holding a key, please email the key number and your name to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Returning Your Craft

Craft may be returned to the yard on Saturday 29th August between 9:00am and 1:00pm.

When returning craft, owners will be required to provide their:

Name
Email address
Phone number

This will assist the Yardmaster in completing an audit of all stored craft and issuing yard storage fees for the 2026/27 season.

Requirements for Returning Craft

To return a craft to the yard, owners must:

Provide evidence that yard storage fees have been paid
Affix an identifying number matching their allocated storage space
Store their craft only in the space allocated to them

Please note: Craft with unpaid or outstanding storage fees will not be permitted back into the yard until all fees are settled.

Unable to Remove Your Craft?

We understand that some members may not be able to remove their boats from the yard.

If this applies to you, please notify the club before 25th July so arrangements can be made around your craft where possible.

Please be aware that machinery will be operating within the yard during the maintenance period, and assistance may be required to relocate your craft to a safer position within the yard.

DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series & Novice Return Series

Entries are now officially open for the 2026 DYSC Marine Supplies Winter Series & Novice Return Series. The Series comprises four races including a destination race to Blairgowrie, a destination race to Geelong, and two short passage races around fixed marks, with the first race on Saturday 20 June 2026. We will start the series off with the marine distress practice which is open to participation for those in Race 1.

Winter Training Courses

Winter is a great time to top up knowledge and get ready for the next season. Popular courses like Weather for Sailors and Fundamental Navigator are returning. This year, we are also offering a new course Prepare your Yacht for Cat 2 & 3.

Today, we had to collect a few from the blue rhib in d'Albora's drystack shed.

Thanks to Carl for letting us park inside the shed in the pouring rain to grab the jackets and a few anchor crates from juniors training.

May Happenings 2026

Keelboats

Some people hate working on Friday afternoons. Some are unemployed. Some are retired. Some just don’t need to.

So we went sailing. The first race of the Fun Friday Winter Pursuit Series. Patriot, Assassin, Amity, Marrakesh, Ninjo and Tumi ventured out. The wind forecast was not mouth-watering so Di and Mark set Course 1: R1 and back via the Mussel Farm. It was a good course as it rewarded tactical decisions.

Little Ninjo enjoyed it. Crew was Keelboat Captain on helm, Scotty Chambers starting helm then tactics and cockpit, Billy on mainsheet and Tony Fenton on jib trim. We started on the Green Pile and had a good angle to the Yellow Pile. Then fast out to Mussel Farm SW mark. We wanted to head over to the wind bend at the Mt Martha cliff so tacked. Had to shoot the Mussel Farm NW mark and tacked soon after. (Any further we risked wind-shadow.) On the nose, slightly cracked, out to R1. By this time the rest of the fleet was well behind. Then the wind dropped out to nothing and we were creeping towards R1 against the tide, still well ahead. Then we opened a second can and retired happy to get Scotty off to work.

The breeze kicked in eventually. Patriot was home first, followed by Assassin close behind. Amity and Ninjo had retired (David Mason got dizzy doing circles) and Marrakesh and Tumi failed to finish in time. But it was nice for all of us to be out on the water after a gruelling “work” week. It wasn’t cold and it didn’t rain.

We have two new perpetual trophies, Champion under AMS and Champion under ORC. See you at Presentation on Saturday evening (6:00pm for 6:30) to find out who won them.

Sailing Summits provide a great opportunity for clubs and classes to share information and ideas and to learn the latest from Australian Sailing on new initiatives, resources, and projects. Hear from content experts as well as those within Clubs, Class Associations and Discover Sailing Centres who have a great idea, resource or success story to share.

Sailing Summits provide an annual opportunity for the decision makers of the sailing community to get together with Australian Sailing senior management and Board Members. All Club and Class Association Flag officers, Presidents, key officials and staff are encouraged to attend.

This year's event will be held at Parkdake Yacht Club on Saturday 13th June.

Dear Members,

This week is National Volunteers Week. The theme this year is "Your Year to Volunteer", which coincides with the United Nations International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.

Australia is not unique in its volunteerism, but it stands out for the longevity of its volunteers. People who give years of service, usually to the same cause, to benefit their community. Many community organisations, such as SBSC, would not exist at all without the efforts of its volunteers, whether they are involved every week or once a year, it is all critical and matters.

It is often said that volunteering pays you back in ways you could not imagine. It differs from paid work where the reward is payment. Volunteering creates a belonging; it binds people with a common interest together and makes the impossible happen. It is the spirit of the community.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to thank all those that volunteer at the Club and in the wider community. Your contribution means that the Club prospers, it carries the vision of the founding Members and continues to build our sailing fraternity. It is us and it makes us better at what we do.

The Club always needs more help though. Your involvement is critical to our success. Regardless of skills and experience, we will always match our volunteers to the Club’s needs. Volunteering will give you more out of your membership than you can imagine. Volunteer and make the impossible happen.

News From Up North

The latest we have heard from our boats up north this winter:

L’Espirit have now departed from LHII and are on passage to New Caledonia. It sounds like they are having a bit of a boisterous time and will no doubt be looking forward to their arrival at Port Moselle in Noumeaa bit later this week.

Vincitore has now arrived at its new home at Royal Queensland Yacht Club where it will be for a while before heading up to Hamilton Island a bit closer to the start of Race Week.

Y Knot is now in Port Douglas and it looks like they have some great weather forecast for Port Douglas Race Week with racing starting tomorrow and concluding on the 23rd May. We look forward to checking out the results later in the week.

APOLLO BAY RACE

The Apollo Bay Race is on this Saturday 23 May 2026. This 52NM Category 3 race features a 6am start and daylight run along the Great Ocean Road, finishing at Apollo Bay. Perfect for sailors building offshore experience or stepping beyond the bay.

We wish both 11-11 and Shimmer a great race to Apollo Bay thus Saturday. The race starts at 6am from Queenscliff.

Junior Sailing Program

Hi All,

We forgot to thank a couple of people last week............

1/ David and Deirdre Snooks, through Snooks Catering, have been incredibly generous in sponsoring the weekly Kiosk Award over many years. Their support has created a special connection between our junior sailors and the excitement of being recognised for their efforts. The Kiosk Award has become a much-loved part of the program, and without their contribution, something truly special would be missing. Each week, recipients are thrilled to receive their award and are often eager to spend it immediately, creating a lasting memory of their day at the club. A huge thank you to David and Deirdre for their ongoing support and for helping make the junior sailing experience so memorable.

2/ A huge thank you to Stuart Scott for stepping in as our unexpected first responder on the final day of junior sailing. To finish off the season, the juniors headed off on an adventure sail down to the Safety Beach jetty, where cupcakes and juice boxes were waiting as a special treat. With a strong northerly blowing, a few of our sailors reached the beach well before the support crew arrived with the refreshments. As several dinghies came hurtling towards the shore at impressive speeds — with kids screaming in a mix of excitement and panic — Stuart just happened to be passing by on his Sunday morning walk. Suddenly finding himself front and centre of the action, he jumped in to help catch the incoming boats as they hit the shore. The kids spilled out laughing and in disbelief that they had just experienced some of the fastest sailing of the entire 18-week program. A huge thanks to Stuart for his quick thinking and willingness to jump in and help until the support crew finally arrived, cupcakes in tow.

We recently sent a survey to all families who participated in the program and, when collated, we will be excited to share the overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many families have already expressed interest in returning next season, which is fantastic news for the club.

May Happenings 2026

Keelboats

I’m back from cruising the Bay of Islands with Amanda and Ewen and of course Elaine. (She’s still in Auckland visiting her sister and brother-in-law.) It was immense fun. The world’s best cruising ground, and L’Esprit will be racing there next January. Envy.

I look back to my final Rugby match at thirty-five for the Towcester club in England. We were about to return to Australia and I would never play again. Elaine and the kids were on the sideline, watching in horror. I had decided to put everything I had into the game regardless of exhaustion, injury, even death. I was hooker, so delighted at the opportunity for legalised violence. I remember after a kick by us the phalanx of their forwards charging us, the ball in the hands of their biggest and nastiest Centurion. I remember the look of surprise on his face when I launched at him and buried my shoulder in his guts. He dropped the ball forward and we got a scrum.

So it was on Sunday for the last race of the Summer season. I looked forward excitedly to the strong winds, the cold, the rain, greenies washing over me, the pain of my 76-year-old bones hiking out like a teenager. The adrenaline-fueled joy of it.

Then ‘they’ abandoned the race. Rightly so as thunderstorms has been predicted by the BOM. So we went to Niels’s place for coffee instead.

South Pacific Adventures Await

Hi all

We just wanted to say thanks for letting us come and play this summer season we had a ball .

We left Sunday morning 6.30 am in a majestic sunrise to see us off.

First stop Eden to clear customs then straight out to Lord Howe Island. We will do a few days there.

Next stop New Caledonia for a week or so. From New Cal we are heading to Fiji for the season.

Late Oct we will then leave the cyclone belt and head south to the Bay of Islands NZ where we will fly the SBSC flag at the Bay of Islands race week in January. We will see out the NZ summer season which at that point we will head back to the South Pacific somewhere.

I want to say a big thanks to Jeff and Jen from our sister ship Tumi that helped us out heaps with the compliance side of things getting L'Esprit registered and cleared to leave Aus. Also to Mark and Di for sharing their invaluable experience and advice on cruising the South Pacific .

Thank you so much.

I will keep you posted on our travels. Thanks all, enjoy winter and see you in a year or two

SYC Commodore's Challenge

Held on Sunday 17th May 2026. Commodores from around the bay are invited to select their best team of female sailors to take part in a competitive one-design racing event. Your team may comprise of 4 or 5 female sailors. All competitors must be current members of the club they will be representing, and each club may only nominate one team. All races will be sailed on SYC's fleet of J70s for this regatta. This is a great opportunity for any of our female sailors to take up. Commodore’s Challenge

DOUBLE HANDED BAY RACE

Entries are still open for the Double Handed Bay Race that returns on Sunday 17 May 2026, a 22–24NM bay course starting near Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. You can form a team of 3-4 boats and compete for the Entire Perpetual Teams Trophy. In 2026, it also counts as Race 2 of the RMYS Two Handed Winter Series. Click here to enter now.
