 Season Opening Flyer 2025

Off The Beach News

Well, howdy Gang, here we go again for another fabulous Summer on the water at SBSC!

Thanks again to everyone that showed up for the working bee on Sunday. We had 30 plus people there and got so much done, it was amazing. We cleared just about everything off the list, with just some painting held up by the weather. As one of the organisers, it was great to be able to hand a task to a team and be confident that it would happen as planned. Everyone was keen to be there, in fact "A Class Anthony" was so keen he showed up on Saturday as well and wondered where everyone was!

So, this Sunday is Opening Day and of course the weather will be perfect. The traditional sail past the Commodore's yacht is 10.30 with the OTB Start time at 11.15 (11.12 first warning). A couple of laps around the pins and then back to the Club for the Opening Celebrations.

This year is shaping up to be a cracker too, with the old gang back, a few regulars taking a season off (sniff), and a bunch of new faces hitting the water. Remember to introduce yourself to any new face that you happen to see, you never know, you might have to borrow something one day! It's going to be interesting to see Ross M chasing Gingerbread Bill M around in his new Impulse and Di Jackson running solo in her newly acquired Sabre after so many years swanning around in the back of the Sharpie, letting Wayne and Russell do all the hard work, (that's what they told me Di, honest!). We"ll also have new members Dave and son Luke in their Nacra as well as Luke M terrorising us in his new foiling Moth, what could possibly go wrong! All in all, where else would you want to be but on the water at SBSC!

Now for a couple of housekeeping items. First up, I will be away for the first three weeks, so if you have a roster issue, I won't be able to help, so contact Bill Manning (sorry Bill). I'm working hard to make sure everyone is set for those weeks, but unforeseen things happen.
Next, the course diagrams for your boat divisions are up on the web site, link attached, and a hard copy will be on the notice board above the sign in desk (right next to the ROSTER!!!!) so make sure you know where you're going before you hit the water, as Geoff won't tell you anything if He's RO, except "RTBO- Read the Bloody Orders". I suggest making a laminated copy and stick it somewhere on your boat, along with one of those nice stickers telling you what all those colourful flags mean.

That's about enough for now, see you on the water this Sunday, I'll be the sad one in a RHIB.

Cheers, Pete Chippy.
Keelboats
I’m getting excited. Ninjo will have her boom and mainsail back on Thursday as she quivers in anticipation of the Opening Day sail-past and the Commodore’s Gold Cup.

Congratulations to all the keelboaters who got stuck in at the Working Bee. It’s the day in the year when more than ever OTB and Keelboaters work together for the benefit of their wonderful club. I ate two sausages.

Going through Ninjo’s Cat5 list. Looking good. Also must update our MOB drill, planned for Sunday. Also looking through the ORCV program to check for significant clashes. A bit late for the pre-Christmas program but worth doing for the Program Part 2.

Going to Perth after New Year for a grandson’s birthday, SailGP, some sailing on Ben and Lucy’s yacht and hopefully a little racing at Royal Perth. Irrelevant, but a bit of a news hiatus this week.

Better next week.

Oh, and if any boats have interesting news, why not post it on the new Skipper and Crew WhatsApp? I’m interested to see if that group takes off.

Yard Storage

Members, please make sure you are paid or in the process of paying your membership to be eligible for yard storage. As we finalise allocations, Fiona will be on the gate this Sunday to take everyone's details as they bring boats in for storage. Allocations will be finalised in the next few weeks. If you still have a boat in the yard and don't plan to sail regularly, your boat may need to go on a top rack or be taken home to create space for the regular sailors.

For Sale

Rick Potter has been diligently preparing "El Toro" for sale. This Sabre was built by long time SBSC member Drew Mattingley, who recently passed away. Drew was very generous in donating both of the Sabres to the club to help pay for our Junior Sailing Program. This boat still has a lot of adventures in it. It would be great if it stayed at the club.
