March Happenings new

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang,
what a great time we had on Sunday. The weather was perfect, the wind was perfect, the course was perfect and the only thing missing was more boats ! A lot of people gave it a miss as they were packed up ready for the Lake Boga Easter Bash as well as for a lot of other reasons, but for the dozen or so lucky buggers that were there it was an absolute cracker! With at least two of each division represented, there was competition for all and the leads changed many times in both races with the wind staying steady but moving around a bit. Ross M as stand in RO set the course nice and close to shore and then handed over responsibility for running the races to Super Deirdre, who did a sterling job (of course)!

Wayne J and Russell T were manning Woodsy and were in charge of the top and hitch marks. Most of us were intrigued by the position of the hitch mark in the first race ( apparently the wind had dragged it to leeward ) but after they repositioned for race two, Zack L and Finn M decided it was better off where it was so did a crash tackle in the Quest and dragged it back there. I hope they did their penalty laps!

Mark L and Rob F were there roaring around in the Windrushs along with four A class cats, perfect day for them. Only three Sabres but we shared the fun around none the less. Nick M, Grace L and James A enjoyed some great surfing on the waves. James enjoyed the still warm water so much he went swimming several times and still declared there was nowhere else he`d rather be. Also enjoying an out of boat experience was Neil W, who in a scene reminiscent of “Cool Runnings” managed to tip in right before the finish line, and like a true Olympian, pushed his Contender over the line to a standing ovation from the crew of the Start boat, including Wife Lorraine who managed to get a great picture of Neil`s smiling face as he drifted past. All in all it was a great day on the water and nearly as good up on the deck afterwards. So if you weren`t there; sucks to be you !

Thanks also to Fiona and Tash Martin for doing a great job in Sutherland and to all the non sailing helpers on the beach, you made a great day even better.

Lastly, a huge congratulations to Nick M and all his gang of cohorts for the fabulous job they have done with the junior gang of kids each week. Without them , and the kids, our OTB fleet will dwindle out as more and more of us old farts go over to the Dark Side.

So see you all in a couple of weeks, have a safe Easter and good luck to everyone heading to Boga (about half the club it seems)

Cheers, Pete Chippy

Junior Keelboat Evening - Friday 22nd March

Last Friday night we held our Junior Keelboat Night. With the introduction of the inaugural “Ciaran’s Cup” we had lots skippers volunteering to put juniors on their boats. In total we had 7 boats, hosting 13 juniors and 5 parents. The first boat across the line, with juniors onboard was awarded the cup. Congratulations to Nick Jones & Fiona Jones on their Adams 10 “Vamanos” for crossing the line first with junior crew Zara & Evelyn. If success is measured in smiles, I rate this event as 100% success. Thank you to all of our wonderful skippers, parents, committee, volunteers, and David Snooks & Deirdre Snooks of Snooks Catering.
If you haven’t heard the back story of this night, Ciaran Snooks created this event over 14 years ago, to make our two sailing divisions, OTB & Keelboat, more accessible and inclusive to junior members. Because of this genius plan, we have seen so many smiles and enjoyment from Ciaran’s idea, and many juniors becoming regular crew on keelboats. So what better way to pay tribute than to name this event in his honour. Thank you Ciaran for humbly accepting this idea and allowing us to honour your wonderful plan for many more years to come.

Congratulations to Vamonos and Vincitore for their 'clean sweep' wins on Friday night and Sunday.  All the results can be found at 2023-2024 Keelboat Results

Thank you to the Friday night tower team of Judy Champion (RO), duty boat 'The Office' and Deirdre Snooks, who saved the day with her (non-rostered) debut in the tower on a Friday night!  All those well-honed skills she has from recording finishes for OTB week in/week out really transferred over nicely to the keelboat tower finish - especially with the entire fleet (25 boats) all finishing within an 8 minute period with the setting sun as a backdrop!  Many thanks too to the Sunday tower team of Elaine Nicholas (RO) and duty boat 'Empara'.

Enjoy your Easter break everyone, and see you back on the water the following weekend.
