Off The Beach News

Welcome to Chippa & Rob’s Motor Boat news!!

Hi all - as the season fast approaches we thought it timely to add some information about patrol boats and what to be mindful of each and every week.
We are trying to ensure that the boats are good to go SAFELY each week so that sailors can sail! We hope that’s sufficient motivation.
Were also trying to set up some simple processes ( they’re not hard) that might minimize damage to boats and or trailers.
Please if you’re on duty the duty includes some basic operational and safety requirements.
A few things come to mind:
  1. LAUNCHING & RETRIEVING – If you are involved in the launch and or retrieval of the boats, please make sure that the propellor is barely in the water whilst sliding backwards into water or approaching trailer. PROP UP - PROP UP - PROP UP!! You’ve most likely all heard us yell. Motors do not need to be all the way trimmed down, if anyone wants any assistance or training with how to best launch and or retrieve safely, don’t hesitate to get in touch please.
  2. FUEL - Red RHIBS fuel gauges are inaccurate, meaning there 30% more empty than they appear on the gauge. If you’re on duty or on a RHIB please ensure the fuel is topped up if it’s anywhere near half. Fuel card is either on one of the boats or on the board at the back of the shed.
  3. LIFE JACKETS – Each RHIB has 4 life jackets and are marked W for Woodsy and S for Sutherland. Please make sure at the start and end of duty all life jackets are returned to the respective homes. NB If you change boats or remove a lifejacket for any reason it’s your responsibility to look after the life jackets and get them back home!
  4. COMMUNICATION  – If there are any issues or observations you make please record those on the whiteboard that will sit in the shed above the small table each week. NB If any accidental damage occurs to ANYTHING it is your responsibility to communicate this to Chippa or Rob.

Thanks, and that’s about it for now and we look forward to seeing you all on the water soon!

Winter Fun Friday Series

Firstly, the Keelboat sub-committee (and I’m sure all the Friday racers) would like to extend a big thank you to Andrew Arblaster.  While this was a fun and casual pilot series, the SBSC tower still needed to be manned every race and Andrew stepped up week after week.  And of course we’ve all enjoyed reading Andrew’s race reports.  Thanks also to Dawn Clark who assisted Andrew regularly – getting in some good tower practice!  Finally, to all the skippers and crew who joined in the Friday races - whether you were a regular starter or just occasionally bunked off work when the weather was just too good not to sail – thank you for supporting this pilot series. Enjoy reading Andrew’s final race report …

A perfect day for a sail.  Seven boats and 25 crew entered the race enjoying the sunshine and light breezes. The forecast was for 10-15 Kt north-west winds.  At start time winds were very variable.  The decision was made to change to a shorter course and Course 13 was selected to enable all boats to finish in the allotted time.  E’toile made the start of the day crossing on her nominated time.  Balance was only 2 seconds late, Shimmer 13 seconds, La Mer 15, Amity 17, Marrakesh (fresh from the Boat Works with new antifoul) 28 seconds, and Yknot 30 seconds.  All very good starts given the tough conditions.

The early starters had a very difficult first two legs, with La Mer and Amity only just moving towards the mussel farm.  14 Minutes after the start the breeze started to fill in from the west, giving the later starters an advantage.  Marrakesh went out to the right and was the first boat round the mussel farm.  La Mer was last around, unable to recover from the slow start.  E’toile held their position.  Shimmer, Yknot and Balance followed taking advantage of the stronger breezes at the time they started.

Marrakesh retained her lead at R1 but Shimmer and Yknot were closing the gap.  Marrakesh held the lead as the boats passed Martha point, but Shimmer was closing fast.  Shimmer caught up to Marrakesh and looked like they were going to pass to leeward.  Marrakesh retrimmed their sails and increased speed.  Shimmer then set themselves for buoy room around the yellow pile and passed as the boats gybed. Shimmer won the race followed by Marrakesh, Yknot, Balance and Etoile.  The race for the final placing was the most hard fought of the day with La Mer having a speed advantage on Amity.  Amity managed to hold them off and finished 2 seconds ahead of La Mer, another 10 metres and the result would have been reversed.

The overall series went to count back with Yknot having more 1st placings than Marrakesh, and Shimmer took out third place.  Marrakesh and Yknot competed in all 9 races.

The win by Shimmer was the start of a big weekend.  Shimmer sailed in the ORCV Coastal Sprint on Saturday for a 1st in PHS and second in both AMS and ORC.  Patriot was first on AMS and ORC and second on PHS.   Shimmer then participated in the Brass Monkey winter series for a second place to Vincitore.

Dawn Clark assisted in the tower with her great record keeping and timing.  We had a guest appearance from David Donaldson who assisted with the finishing.

The series has shown that there is interest in a Fun Friday series.  The fleet has built over the nine races and we have had 14 boats compete in the series, with one race attracting eight boats.  Hopefully, the committee will consider running the series next year.
