Winter Fun Friday Series (Race 7)
Originally scheduled for Friday 18th, the race was postponed to be run on Sunday 20th. A good decision as the wind was 30 kts on Friday afternoon. Definitely not suitable for a fun race. Sunday’s race was run in a 10 kts or less west/north-west breeze on a sunny afternoon. Course 1 was selected. Six boats started with 23 crew. Two new boats joined the Friday Fun fleet, with Amity and Anthea starting for the first time. Four boats started at 6 seconds from start time, with Lumiere at 12 seconds and Amity at 60 seconds.
On the first beat out to 25, Yknot and Shimmer went to the right and had better breeze. A lift enabled them to take time out of the other boats. Amity went well to the left and found the Arthurs Seat wind shadow. First around 25 was Lumiere followed by Anthea and Marrakesh. The wind dropped as the boats sailed to R1, with boat speeds dropping to 3 kts. Anthea and Amity retired on this leg of the course.
The next view the race officers had was the great sight of four boats in close proximity with the backdrop of the winter sun on calm waters. We watched as Shimmer overtook Yknot and Marrakesh, then Yknot passed Marrakesh. Shimmer had their first win for the series followed by Yknot, Marrakesh and then Lumiere. All boats finished in a space of 5 minutes.
Race Officer for the day was Glenys Hitchen, a National Race Officer from Davey’s Bay Yacht Club. Glenys will be well known to sailors from the club as the PRO for the Petersville regatta at BYS, and Race Officer for the Festival of Sails at Geelong, RBYC, and SheSails. We were very fortunate to have her experience in the tower. Dawn Clark assisted with records and Greg Clark managed the lights. Overall, a wonderful afternoon of winter sailing for all competitors.
Next race Friday 1st September.
