Safety Beach Sailing Club NEWS 3rd December 2025

Off The Beach News

Hi all,

Wow what a great day sailing on Sunday! The day started with a lot of OTB crew taking shelter upstairs and watching the large shore break for the best way to launch without being washed ashore or smashing into the rock wall! Strong Westerlies are difficult. As the morning progressed more participants arrived, and everyone soon realised it was on! Launching was interesting with Greg and James walking the boat to almost Dromana to still be 2m from the beach towards the rock wall. Rick Potter was first to launch to beat the next squall but quickly returned to take off his expensive glasses and to put sailing gloves on. A big call out to Abbey for holding his boat whilst he got ready again. The race officers did a great job to set a course inside the mussel farm with the start not far from the club. The sailing was great, big swell and wind in the first race and similar but less wind in the second. Bill Manning, what can we say! Three times this season (Club Record!) you have dropped your mast on the water! We need to chip in and buy you a shackle key! James Thorne took out the chocolates for the Sabre fleet (just) behind Rick. Also, worth mentioning the 3 Lasers that braved the weather and seeing Luke almost beat his dad Ross in his Impulse.

Well done to all, it was a great day and looking forward to a repeat this Sunday!

Keelboats

I know I said last week that I love the sea; that I would brook no excuse for not sailing on the Friday Twilight. But Elaine’s young niece and her partner had a showing of their feature film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, so we followed progress from a little theatre in Hawthorn. All I can say of the race is that Little Ninjo started to sail the wrong course, heading off to Pier mark or something. I gather the roundings of the Ghost Mark were not all perfect.

But I was back on Little Ninjo for Race 3 of the Community Bank Southern Peninsula Club Championship. Eight boats again.

Course 21 was sailed. No Ghost Mark this time, and a jolly 13.4 nautical miles it was. A pleasant breeze reaching 25 knots at times. Where did Rawhide go, following Shimmer round as if Shimmer were her mother and she was hungry for a feed?

A beat into a westerly took us out to SB1 then a close reach down to SB2. Then back to Yellow Pile under Code Zeros, spinnakers or nothing to the Yellow Pile, then Green, a beat out to SB1 again and spinnakers home.

The Sydney 32s matched raced round the course, Empara finally crossing the line a minute ahead of Perception. Fun to watch the tussle. Little Ninjo was quite pleased, crossing the line a bit over two minutes ahead of Empara. Well done all, with Unprecedented and Shimmer taking out the minor placings under all three handicaps.

I have to award RAWHIDE as BOAT OF THE WEEK. First under PHS, first under AMS and first under ORC! It is rumoured that she will be competing in the Adams 10 Championships next year. We’re obviously giving her plenty of training.

After three races Rawhide is leading the Championship Series PHS on 7 points with Unprecedented snapping at her heels on 8 points. Then a battle for third between Perception, Empara and Ninjo on 15. Under AMS Rawhide leads on 4 points with Ninjo and Unprecedented following on 11 points. Under ORCc the order is Rawhide, Unprecedented and Perception, with Ninjo a point behind. It’s starting to get interesting.
