Hello Crew,
Sunday presented the sailing fraternity an interesting decision to risk or play it safe.
The start boat headed out at midday to register wind readings coming straight down the bay from the North with a base of 20 knots with gust closer to 30. We then rode the small surf down to the leeward start point to again check the wind conditions – no change. We set the windward mark inside the point and tried to give some wave protection.
A decision was then made for the 4 keel boats to race as the maximum readings around 12.50pm had not exceeded 30 kt with the base around 20-22, within keel boats racing tolerances. The keel boats had a bit on but seemed to be able to cope with the conditions.
We advised the OTB shore staff to fly a postponement as it was too high for these members to sail safely with readings hitting 27 kts
The forecast was for the wind to abate and turn west. No sign of the westerly but getting closer to 2pm the base had dropped to 15kts and the maximums around 22kt.-Postponment dropped for a start around 2.45pm.
10 OTB boats came out
One Impulse decided he preferred to practice capsizing prior to the start so as to let Ross Martin feel invincible.
The Tasar and 420 had a good couple laps with the Tasar sailing away on the last lap. Sabres were a bit more spread out but all sailors that ventured out handled the early conditions extremely well. Unfortunately, the wind continued to drop and shift west. By the end it had dropped below 7 kts.
The 2nd race was abandoned, and of course with knowledge, the wind had disappeared totally – thank goodness we didn’t go for this race.
Once again SHIFTY BEACH showed its true colours (which keeps our sailors on their toes)
Next week lets go again
Thanks, Stuart
Enough wind to blow the tip off a flag!
Keelboats
Well well. Rawhide and Unprecedented got a handy head start for the Club Championships! Marrakesh had a crack too but had to retire due to breakage.
The wind, a pure northerly, was close to the recommended club limits, but not quite. So four yachts took off – Rawhide, Unprecedented, Marrakesh and Necessite. The course set was #24; around the Mussel Farm, then a run to Pier, a beat to R1, a run round the Mussel Farm, Yellow, then the Red Pile , a beat to R1 then home. Welcome to Simon Dryden to our waters. Back in the clubhouse the Rawhiders said they loved the course. Meanwhile the OTB fleet spent time lounging onshore under the AP. The kiosk made a killing.
Newbies Necessite braved the course and did most of it (although they may or may not have neglected to round the mussel farm). They retired after a valiant workout. So I have nominated them for Boat of the Week.
Thanks to LeTardis for providing two in the Tower and Dave Bradshaw on one of the RIBs laying marks and generally bouncing about. The OTB finished up about the same time as the Tower was packing up, so good timing. The next Club Championship race is on 23rd November. Ninjo will be hoping to trim Rawhide’s tail feathers.
The Friday Twilight attracted 11 boats. It was the postponed Tony’s Race and Tony’s son Ewen gave out the prizes and awarded the trophy to John Gordon and the E’toile crew. It was a fun evening but we need another 10 boats in the water for the Twilights. I nearly awarded Amity the Boat of the Week. She looked so good coming home surrounded by a pack of giants.

What's missing from the tower???
A HUGE thanks to Ross & Luke Martin for removing the glass partition in preparation for reconfiguring the Tower.

Training Room
If you haven’t popped your head into the training room lately, you’ll notice a few new additions! Members can now enjoy access to a fridge and complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities. In the coming weeks, a split system air conditioner will also be installed to make the space more comfortable for members, guests, and potential clients renting the room.
Please remember to leave the room as you found it and maintain food hygiene practices when storing or leaving food in the fridge.
Yard Storage Reminder
Thank you to all members who have already submitted their yard storage applications — your invoices have now been sent.
To be eligible for yard storage, please ensure your membership is paid or currently being processed. Yard allocations will be finalised over the coming weeks.
Members with boats, surf skis, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, etc. that
remained in the yard over winter 2025 are still required to submit a new yard storage application (
click here). Please do so promptly so we can accurately account for everyone’s property.
If you currently have a boat in the yard but don’t plan to sail regularly, your boat may need to be placed on a top rack or taken home to make room for active sailors.
Locking Up
If you have a yard key, please ensure that all gates are checked and locked if you are the last to leave the club. This responsibility lies with yard key holders, not Snooks staff, so please take a moment to confirm everything is secure before you go. When locking the driveway gate, make sure the padlock is secured to the second lock, as shown in the photo below.
Thank you for helping keep the club safe and secure.

Rate Cuts
Are you getting the best from the interest rate cuts?
Why not speak to a local about refinancing?
What have you got to lose?
For Sale
Rick Potter has been diligently preparing "El Toro" for sale. This Sabre was built by long time SBSC member Drew Mattingley, who recently passed away. Drew was very generous in donating both of the Sabres to the club to help pay for our Junior Sailing Program. This boat still has a lot of adventures in it. It would be great if it stayed at the club.
