Howdy OTB Gang.
Sorry about the weather last Sunday, that was my fault. I ordered up some strong wind to mess with the Mt Martha sailors and accidentally went a bit overboard- literally ! So as it stands, for the second year running we have missed out on our chance at redemption. And with their and our calendars full for the rest of the season, we will have to wait until next year. Bummer! Thanks anyway to all the people that volunteered to help on the day and earlier to set things up, Yer blood`s worth bottling.
On to other things now. As this weekend is the Labour Day long weekend where we were going to be hosting the I14 state titles but aren`t, and a lot of the sailors , eg: the A class cats and Tasars, being away for their state titles and generally not a lot of bods around, it was decided to leave this Sunday as no official OTB sailing. That being said, if you want to go for a sail there is nothing stopping you using the yard. Just be careful, and make sure the gates are locked when you leave please.
While on the subject of State titles, Gingerbread Bill M and myself ventured up to Black Rock the weekend before last for the Sabre states and what a cracking weekend it was! 65 entries and only 2 from SBSC :-( , we`ll have to do better next year guys and gals. 65 boats made for a very long start line and with every race starting under a `U` flag they were taking no prisoners. Saturday started with strong wind that built as the day wore on. As Sunday was predicted to be very light, Race Management opted to run 3 races on Saturday to ensure they completed a series just in case Sunday was a bust.
Let me tell you, those three races were all over an hour long and with travel time and the obligatory shifting of marks, we were on the water for over 6 hours ! And the waves up there are completely different to our nice gentle Safety Beach swell. They would rise up vertically in front of you, smack you in the face and say `Stop Right There Sucker!`so I did, many times. Bill on the other hand fared much better, he must have been on the favoured side of the course. Day two, as predicted, was very light but good enough to sail so we set out again for 2 more races, again over an hour long, another 5 hours on the water- sheesh, give a guy a break! The wind in the last race dropped out to zero in places and you could see groups of boats parked up together as you snuck up on them ( or visa versa ) only to take off again with much yelling and bumping - loads of fun !
Eventually the race was shortened, but with the fast sailors being fast and only a 15 minute window to finish after the first boat, just 20 of the 63 starters made it in time. Of those 20, our boy Bill was number 2! Giving him 18th place overall and 3rd in Grand Masters for the weekend. Great job Bill. Good to see a great representation by the female sailors too, with 7th,8th and 15th being ladies and 15 female sailors in total, nearly a quarter of the fleet! `How did You go Chipper?`I hear you ask. Don’t ask. But we all had fun, it was a well run regatta and the Sabre group are all friendly and eager to help each other out, from the top sailors to the cellar dwellers like me. I had no trouble sleeping that night and was very glad to have Monday off.
That’s about it for this week, good luck to everyone away for titles and we`re looking forward to hearing all about it.
Cheers, Pete Chippy

Fear not, Nick and his team will have many other activities planned for the morning if we cannot get onto the water. The training program will continue for the next two weeks 9.30am – 11.30am every Sunday of the following dates:

Junior Keelboat Evening - Friday 15th March
Each year our Keelboat division invite all junior members to experience sailing on a big boat. This night is always a special treat and guarantees much rivalry between boats, as all skippers and their junior crew will be sailing for sheep stations, bragging rights, and all other expressive terms you can think of !!!
The date is set for Friday 15th March, which is also St Patrick's Day! Boats usually leave the marina by approx 4.45pm, so you would need to be available from that time. If your junior would like to participate in this evening please send us an email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Tuesday 12th March so that we can organise boats. Parents and guardians are most welcome and encouraged to accompany their juniors on this evening. The club have a great night planned for St Patricks Day, so consider booking dinner once you finish sailing.

OCEAN RACERS SET COURSE FOR DESTINATION KING ISLANDOn the 9th March 2024, the 114 nautical mile race across Bass Strait, organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria and supported by the King Island Boat Club, starts. The fleet will set off from Queenscliff bound for Grassy Harbour, and this year's 53rd ORCV Melbourne to King Island Race promises thrilling battles throughout the feet. Racing under AMS, ORC, multihull, double-handed, and PHS, boats compete for the King Island Trophy awarded to the overall winner on AMS.Sailors don’t race in this event just for the sailing. One mention of crayfish, the infamous rib eye fillet steak sandwiches and local cheeses has the fleet of close to 200 sailors onboard salivating, ready to knock down the door to the wonderful hospitality of the King Island Boat Club, which uses the event as its major annual fundraiser. We would like to wish our local boats, Shimmer, Summer’s Lease, Ginan and JokerX2, a safe and speedy passage to Grassy Harbour (seen below).
- 24th March The annual trip tour of Port Phillip Heads, departing Queenscliff at 10.00 am. The tour provides for well-planned and executed transits of the Heads, with an emphasis on doing so in low-powered vessels (like yachts), and provides information to participants on the numerous navigational aids and strict procedures required for safe passage through. For more information and to book. https://www.orcv.org.au/training/rip-tour-of-port-phillip-heads
