Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.
I wasn’t there on Sunday so I’m basing this weeks report on information supplied by Gingerbread Bill M. So, apparently all races, in all divisions were won by Bill Manning, who sailed magnificently and was approached afterwards by Tom Slingsby to fill in for him as Skipper on Team America in the next Americas Cup series! And I thought I was a bulldust artist!

Seriously though, from what I've heard, Sunday was a beautiful day for sailing, with good breeze in the morning and a lighter but consistent  Northerly in the afternoon to give a good start to the Lions Club series. 21 boats hit the water (all the usual suspects) and all had a good time, with maybe the exception of Jamieson F who snapped his mast before the race and had to be towed home. Oh, the shame. I`ll bet it was Rob Campbell that did the towing, giving him grief all the way to the beach!

Part of the reason we were missing a few boats was that the Snapper Point Regatta was on at Mornington and we had two teams there in 420`s. Liv and Garry Cameron gained 2nd place in Div 2 while Finn Meijer and Ollie Bulka came in 4th. Great work guys. We all remember the photo in the local paper last year of  Finn and Zac L flying off the top of a wave in some pretty wild conditions during that regatta. Not quite the same wind this year hey guys, but a great effort just the same.

This Sunday is races 3 and 4 of the Lions Club series and then a week off for the Sail Peninsula extravaganza. On that note, the organizers have asked if all boats could be removed from the grass area this weekend so the marquee can be set up. I`ve been reliably informed that any boats left on the grass will be sold and all proceeds will be deposited into the Bill Manning retirement fund.

Thanks again to the Race team last week, Wonder Geoff, Super D, Rollicking Rob C with Side kick Simon (this is getting hard) and first time commanding their own rhib was Jess L and Nick M. This weeks rhib crews are James and Abbey Everett with Greg Lowe and Matt Whitaker. That’s about it for this week, see you all on Sunday for 10-15 knots and scattered clouds, perfect !

Friday Pursuit Race

The Friday night fleet (20 boats) enjoyed a bit of variety, with the use of the Special Course and pilot run with the Botmark.  It was nice to see Crowded House back out in the fleet for their first race.  In fact, they made sure everyone saw them as they paraded past – starting last and finishing in first place!  Congratulations Dave Lorimer and crew.

Thanks to everyone who assisted in laying the Botmark and chaperoning it home, including Simon Dryden and Steve Twentyman on Shimmer and John Wemyss and Tim Barton on Anthea.

Sunday Summer Series

Great to see a new Div 2 boat racing on Sunday – welcome to Philippe Etienne and crew on Betise.
Division 1 winners were Vamonos on PHS and Vincitore (AMS and ORCc), while Summer Breeze were first in Division 2.  Click HERE for full results.
A big thank you to our tower regulars; Race Officers Amanda Malin and Elaine Nicholas, supported by duty boats Vamonos and Etoile.
