Howdy OTB Gang.
What a great day we had last Sunday traveling around the hill to take on our dreaded Foe, the Mount Martha Yacht Club. Although the weather started out a bit on the bleak side, that didn't deter the hardy bunch that set of from SBSC on what I reckon is one of the best sails of the season. The trip around the cliffs is truly a delight, and even with the gloomy skies the view is pretty spectacular. This year we had a tail wind all the way so it was a fairly quick trip of about 20 to 30 minutes depending on your boat.
Once there, we were welcomed by our MMYC brothers and sisters and their plethora of boats but also some extras from SBSC that had trailered their boats instead of sailing. All good, as long as they got there we were in with a chance. We also had a secret weapon arriving later in the form of FIVE A class Cats!
After a brief pit stop for some eyeballing and sabre rattling (I must try and fix that rattle in my Sabre!) we had a very comprehensive briefing to sort out our divisions and course roundings. Their divisions are a bit different to ours so our 420's ended up with the Tasar's and Aero's, a bit to our disadvantage unfortunately. Not to worry, we were there to sail, so sail we did. This year we had 22 boats to their 35 which is a lot better than the last couple of times, so thanks to everyone that turned up.
As I said last week, they might have the numbers but we have the skill and we placed first in 3 of the 5 divisions and second in another. It was only in div 5 (our Div 2) that they really had the wood on us where Bill Manning top scored with 5th and the rest of us Sabre's were way out the back, sorry bout that!
Our real stand out was our A class guys who took the first 5 of 6 places and even had their guy in a Viper cat questioning if our guys did all 4 laps, as they were finished and he still had a lap to go. It was promptly pointed out that all our boats had lapped him and in fairness, the sight of 5 of those rockets whizzing around you on the rather short course would put anyone's head in a spin! Kudos also to Abbey Everett, who sailed around in a Tera to escort one of our new members, Jamieson Ferguson (more on him later). When Jamieson decided wisely not to head out into a mixed fleet of 60 or so boats with his limited experience, Abbey took to the water in the Tera and comprehensively wiped the floor with them. I think this week we underachieving Sabre's had best head out in some Opti's and try and gain some points!
Racing over and it was time to head home. Remember that tail wind we had getting there? Yeah, it was still blowing in the same direction, only much lighter, so that half hour trip getting there in the morning turned into a glorious two hour cruise reminiscent I'm sure, of Mark and Di's trip around the Caribbean.
This week Mount Martha come to visit us and I'm sure everybody that has a seaworthy boat will be keen to get into the action, especially those that missed out last week, hint hint. As there will be a lot of boats in the yard, please treat it like any other regatta and don't bring your car past the gates and once you have unloaded your boat, park your trailer in the trailer yard. I'm hoping to have a couple of volunteers to help with bringing in the trailers while people park their cars. If anyone is available I'd greatly appreciate a call.
Now for Sailor of the Week. Remember Jamieson Ferguson that I mentioned earlier? Well it turns out that that epic sail around to Mount Martha was his THIRD TIME IN A SAILBOAT !!! He capsized twice and promptly righted his Tera, climbed in and kept on going with no fuss at all. As I said, Abbey was mentoring him and there was always a rhib nearby but I was keeping a eye out to make sure they didn't stray too close to the cliffs and assumed by his skill level that he had been sailing for a season at least! Its a gutsy effort to make it past the Point when you're a newbie, so to sail single handed all the way to Mount Martha is exceptional, well done Jamieson.
Thanks also to Rob Campbell and Bruce Mansfield , Fiona Lowe and Jameson's Mum Michelle for escorting us there and back in the rhibs, that's a very important part of the day
That's all for this week. Note that there is a Walk for Ovarian Cancer Research starting in our car park Sunday morning but we have been assured they will be packed up and gone by 9.00 am And they are even flagging off our car park with marshals only letting sailing people through, so all good there..
Cheers and see you all on Sunday, Pete Chippy

ORCV Rip Tour of Port Phillip Heads - Sunday March 19th
“The Rip” is the narrow entrance to Port Phillip, where underwater reefs limit the navigable entrance to just 0.6nm and provides a restricted tidal flow between the ocean and Port Phillip, where over 4,000 commercial vessels transit annually.
Once a year, the ORCV runs an on-water tour from a large ferry looking at the navigation aids, tides, how to and which channels to use, radio protocols etc for a safe transit of the heads.
