Vale Roma McCullough

On Friday evening we received the very sad news that Roma McCullough had passed away.  We will miss Roma greeting us on shore when we return from a tough day on the water.  Our sincerest condolences go to Tom, Fiona and the McCullough & Martin families.  We received this very lovely email from Tom below which we would like to share with our members.

Dear Secretary, Commodore, Committee and all other members of S.B.S.C.,

Your superb flowers arrived today for the Martins and McCulloughs, who gratefully acknowledge the Club's condolences on the loss of Tom's wife of 62 years Roma McCullough, who died recently aged 84 years. Her memorial service will be on a live stream link via Tobin Brothers website, on Friday 22nd October at 10am.

The family is even more grateful for all the kindnesses and consideration of many SBSC members (especially the Snooks) during Roma's past eleven years of declining health. She treasured all her visits to the Clubhouse to meet many old friends ashore, and to gently oversee her various families' sailing performances on Sundays, as three generations of McCulloughs and Martins survived (and excelled regularly) in all conditions in their small boats upon Port Phillip Bay. Roma and family have been continuous members of SBSC since 1980.

This followed 15 years of Roma's competitive dinghy racing as Tom's crew at Lake Cullulleraine Yacht Club near Mildura, with two daughters Susan and Fiona in Moths. As a family they all cruised Sydney Harbour in their Hartley TS16 in 1976. The photo below shows Roma trimming the vang in Tom and Roma's Sonata 7 on Westernport during 2005, when they winter-cruised out of Yaringa Marina. The passengers in this photo taken by Tom (invisible helmsman) are their daughter Fiona Martin and grandchildren Luke and Natasha Martin, all eventual sailors at Safety Beach Sailing Club. This time was when Roma was on the SBSC Social Committee organising youth activities including games nights and her Crazy TEE shirts competition (won by her grandchildren!).

Roma loved sailing until her health declined, but the social values of SBSC membership were also invaluable. We all hope that her passing will simply add to these solid foundations for even better times and successes for the next generations of young (and older) sailors in this precious region of the Mornington Peninsula.

Tom McCullough OAM,
(formerly a Sabre sailor, past SBSC Secretary and Club Historian)

OTB Captain's Report

Howdy Folks. Well it looks like it’s almost here! Restrictions are easing this Friday, but as of writing , sailing is open for training but not racing. So at this stage our season opening will be the 7th of November with the Commodore’s Cup.  The program has already been set up for the season with allowances for a late start. Geoff has written the Sailing instructions which are available on the club website (OTB SI's 2021-22 Link)  with a provision to sail three races in a session so we can catch up on missed days if needed to make sure we have the right number of races for a series.

I’m currently working on the roster and will have it on the website this week. I’m doing it as a provisional roster to start to give you the opportunity to check your dates and get back to me ASAP (two weeks max.) if you are unavailable on that date so I can change it. After that the usual rules apply, i.e. it’s up to you to organise a replacement. This season we are also going have an extra person on the start boat, provided on many weeks by the keelboat crew rostered on for the tower, and we thank them most humbly. This won’t be every week though and I would like to also make use of the member's who did the Race Officers course last year to gain some on water experience thereby giving us a succession plan for the future. After all, Geoff and Deirdre do have other lives too!

While I’m harping on about the roster (sorry), it’s probably a good time to ask if any body is willing to do some extra duties at anytime if they are available, be they a sailor who’s boat isn’t ready or a parent that would like to be on the water or even a social member who doesn’t know the first thing about sailing, all would be appreciated. Just give me a call on 0402 231 782 after 5.00pm (I don’t bite)

Cheers for now- get your boats ready!

Sailor App for OTB Racing at SBSC

To read more of this week's club E-news please click on the red READ MORE tab at the bottom of the email.

Earlier in the year for the winter series, the Sailor App was introduced for OTB as detailed in the E-News (14th July edition). This allows for immediate communication, more efficient management of Sign on/Sign off, instant access to results and racing documentation via your digital device, as well as access links to weather forecast sites and much more.

Due to Covid restrictions & subsequent lack of use, we are re-running the set-up details in preparation for the summer season. The details of all the OTB boats from our former boat register that have raced at SBSC in recent years, have been entered into the app. The current sailing instructions (18.3.3) also specify the Sailor App as the sign-on/sign-off method.

Please see the details below and also via the link on the club website Click HERE on how to set up this app on your device and make sure you get signed up now before the start of the season!

Bambu - The final chapter

There have been many of our members following the progress of Jonathan Ross and the delivery trip of the 43ft Trimaran, Bambu, from the Gold Coast to Tahiti.  Unfortunately, despite the best preparation this trip didn't quite go as planned and Bambu is safely packed up back at The Boatworks.  If you would like to find out more click here.
