Women's Sailing Get Together

On behalf of the club's Executive Committee, I'm calling together everyone who is interested in Women's Sailing.
Over the past 5 to 6 years there have been different strategies at SBSC to give women opportunities to take more active roles in racing at SBSC and it has certainly made a difference!   It's a good time now to get together and discuss needs and options so we can plan ahead for next Summer season.
We will also discuss the structure of how we go forward with this. We need a Women's Rep. for liaising with Yachting Victoria and to be part of the Club's Sailing Committee, but this could be backed up by a committee.

Details:

When: Friday 2nd July @ 5.45pm at the Club for 6pm start (in small room), should finish by 7pm but let's stay for dinner.
Who: For  ANYONE, new sailors and new members VERY welcome, the regulars and also anyone prepared to assist

If you can't make it but you are interested in any aspect, please send me an email/call - we need as much feedback/assistance as possible.

If you can make it please RSVP - and confirm if staying for dinner, so i can ensure we are compliant with Covid max numbers and let Dave know for catering purposes.

Thanks

OTB Report

Hi folks.
Well we finally got a start to our winter series! And what a start it was. With a weather forecast that promised so little, it ended up giving so much! Clear blue skies and not a breath of wind pointed towards a day of talking bull and disappointment! But as the keelboats drifted serenely off in the distance and a few die hards (including four visiting Aeros from McCrae) hopefully rigged up in the yard, a call came from Deirdre out on the start boat, “Ahoy ye sailors! Thar be wind out here - get yer arses in them boats , we’re starting on time!"

A flurry of action and thirteen boats hit the water with an eye on an approaching wind front. By the time we made it to the start line, a steady breeze and flat water made for a nice first race, although an all in start caught a few of us off guard. Be warned, them pirates take no prisoners! Race two and building wind even coaxed a couple more doubters off the beach, although even the experts sometimes pick the wrong side of the course and get left in the figurative dust! (sorry Bill, not really sorry).  The changes to the sailing instructions for this series meant that a third race could be run if needed. As nobody was keen to leave the course, race three was started in a steady 12 knots with gusts up to 15 - PERFECT !  By the time we were back on the beach, the wind had died away and the sun was still shining so everyone was pretty much in agreement that it doesn’t get much better than that. Except maybe the six or so Moth sailors who were advised not to bother as there wasn’t any wind expected (Mr Fleming isn’t called the Lone Ranger for nothing!).  Thanks again to Geoff and Deidre on start and Stuart and Ross in the rib, great job!

So with all that in mind, get yer selves organised and get down for a sail this Sunday. I know the weather forecast isn’t great, but neither was last time, so do you want to take the chance - well do ya?

Most importantly, don’t forget to mark yourselves unavailable for anything else on Saturday 31st of July for this year’s AGM at 4.00 PM at the Club to be followed by the 2020-21 Presentation Event. Get your RSVPs in pronto and don’t forget to send your nominations for Club person of the year and Junior Club person to the Secretary or even hand it to a Committee Member ASAP.
That’s enough for now.

Cruisers Corner - Life on Timeout

We’re currently at Yeppoon after spending 11 nights out at Lady Musgrave, Wistari Reef and North West Island which has been a real highlight of the trip so far. Lady Musgrave was a beautiful place for snorkelling with lots of colourful fish and we have also enjoyed snokelling with some turtles at Great Keppel Island. Home schooling has it’s challenges but we’re getting through it.  We plan to leave later this week to continue the slow trip north. We have a boats Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/sailing_timeout/
