Australia Day Weekend @ SBSC
With the 2020 part of the season behind us, the first Junior sailing for 2021 was off and racing this Sunday. It was fantastic to see so many new faces join us for the first time. Unfortunately the weather in the morning wasn't appropriate for new sailors. Thanks to Ewan Campbell, Erik Meijer & Andrew Martin we were able to have all 10 new Juniors out on the water and even better given a really fun and positive experience. With our more experienced Junior Squad we had the chance to get them back into racing mode, with starts being the focus of this week's training and exercises. Kind of fitting being the start of the New Year.
With the club in full swing this weekend, we are encouraging all Juniors, who feel up to it, to join and be part of the festivities. We will be back Sunday morning from 9am for more fun and sailing! Keep an eye on the website throughout the week for the calendar for the rest of the season activities.
Ciaran Snooks, Natasha Martin, Grace Lazzar
Woo Hoo! We finally got all the ducks lined up. Great wind, good weather, NO jet skis, and on a Sunday! And what a cracker it was. With a really nice course (thanks Geoff), it was a pleasure to be on the water. We started with a nice long beat and a couple of almost screaming reaches, some great waves to surf and a fairly bunched up fleet, it made for an extremely enjoyable race. It was obvious that we were having such a good time that the race crew extended the course so we could have more of a good time for race two! It’s great to see more of the junior sailors coming out to join in the afternoon races as well, so when you see them sail past, give them an encouraging word or two. After all we want them to be around long enough to do the same for us one day !
I like to thank the race team each week for the great job they do, whether it’s the regulars or a rostered on sailor, and this week we had a new member, Leanne Brady who happily put her hand up to crew one of the ribs for the day, no questions asked. Leanne is new to sailing and to Safety Beach. She is the proud owner of a well loved Sabre and will be looking forward to some of the same help and advice I was shown when I joined SBSC.
Also this week I would like too highlight the efforts of the incomparable Deidre Snooks, who not only helps launch and retrieve the boats, assists Geoff and keeps tab of all the times EVERY week, but also does a great job on the back end of her trusty camera phone.
I’ve added a couple of her pictures this week to whet your appetite and if you want to see the rest, go to the SBSC Facebook page, they really are worth a look.
So next time you sail past the start boat, give a big smile or do something stoopid (more my style) and you’re sure to get your mug up in lights!
Finally, good luck to all the SBSC sailors going to McCrae this week for the Ronstan regatta.
Don’t forget that this week we are sailing on Saturday and Sunday at 13.57H and then on Tuesday, Australia Day, at 10.57 prior to Presentation ceremony at the club in the afternoon .
That’s definitely enough from me
